drakyndra: The Music Meister demands you sing! (Hoopy Frood Ten)

Crikey!

So, Steve Irwin is dead. Death by stingray - what a way to go. At least it was doing something he loved.

That said, it disturbs me a little how cheery some people are about his death. Yeah, he was a bit of an idiot and promoted a horrendously cliched image of Australia. But he also did a lot of conservation and all, and had a wife and kids, and for all the manner of his death is amusing, in an ironic sort of way, being happy because he is dead just seems a little heartless.

On a more cheery note, some more fun stuff from [livejournal.com profile] dw_anon: The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny (featuring Nos and Kammgirl); Steve/Dave slashers FTW!; A "Doctor loves them all" comic; a Steven Moffat vs Rusty bitchfight; a rather nice post-Doomsday minific; a ship second in awesomeness only to Dish; a friending meme, of all things; Ood porn; an explanation of Steve Irwin's death (!!);

Oh, and there's this thread about me. Which is mostly positive, but the bits that aren't positive are... enlightening. I'm a female hating slasher WTF? Oh, and elsewhere I'm a Romana fan.

Which reminds me, I must get around to watching my City of Death DVD one of these days...

Oh, and we have Video footage of the Doctor/Martha handporn.

dw_anon needed a friends meme, yes. It makes all the anonymous posters show who they are ^^

[identity profile] dune-drd.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, up to now no one is friending each other, I guess the hate makes everyone a bit paranoid ^^

Lickey!

[identity profile] kittenblah.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The friends meme is kinda cute. I feel less paranoid that there's like 3 people posting over and over again now.

And it appears I have a talent for coming up with totally messed in the head ships. I claim the guilt for Micky/Martha's Brother. So now Lickey and DocTICKYDoor are the ships to be at. Infact, a lot of the nonsensical stuff around pages 7-9 I feel a bit guilty for. Only a bit cause the place is nuts enough already.

This anon meme is really cute. No proper proper wank yet though, which is a shame. Maybe we should stage a DocTICKYDoor coup?

Re: Lickey!

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Only three people on that friends meme aren't already on my flist.

I came up with the name Licley! We pwn at crack ships!

It's, as I said to someone the other day, less ragey hate, and more mocking hate. Hence, not too nasty. Maybe some other time, I is a bit busy.

Re: Lickey!

[identity profile] kittenblah.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
No ways, you're the Lickey?! Stunning.

We're officially queens of crack!ships.
Now, to gain some acceptance of them and do the summer reading I've been putting off for months :/

Re: Lickey!

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm good at coming up with stupid smushnames. Which makes the fact I hate them really ironic.

Yes, to do that...

Re: Lickey!

[identity profile] kittenblah.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing like a nice dose of irony to get you out of bed in the morning.

Maybe the joy of crack!ships is just that people dont get it. I'd die of joy if someone wrote a Lickey fic, but on the other hand I just wouldnt know what to do other than flail in joy.

Re: Lickey!

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Crackships are just plain fun, even if other people think you are crazy for liking. Silliness for the sake of being silly has always appealed to me. And I'm with you on the flailing.

Re: Lickey!

[identity profile] kittenblah.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Flailing is fun.

And I wrote a minific on Leo and Mickey meeting. And posted it to [livejournal.com profile] lifeonmartha.

Does this officially mean I have too much spare time and not enough brain cells?

Re: Lickey!

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'll take a look when I am on my own computer tonight.

And one can never have too much spare time.

[identity profile] gypsyjr.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That said, it disturbs me a little how cheery some people are about his death.

Glad I'm not the only one.

(And I've always thought that judging an entire country by the actions of one person was fairly idiotic anyway.)

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I'm not bothered by jokes about how he died - it was amusing and ironic, and some of the stuff on metaquotes is good - it's the people who are all "THANK GOD HE'S FINALLY DIED" that disturb me.

And Steve Irwin may have been a bit of an idiot, but he was an entertaining one. And he was true to himself, which I respect, even if it lead to way too many headdesky conversations with International students last year.

[identity profile] dune-drd.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Such as? Never seen him not dubbed I have to admit

[identity profile] gypsyjr.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel sorry for his family, though. Say what you want about the man, but the fact that his wife and two young kids will have to carry on his life's work without him is just... sad. To me, anyway.

*sigh* Can I just go back to being amused at the hatememe now?

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's sad for them, certainly. Especially because it was so utterly unexpected. It's all over the papers today...

Yeah. Go hatememe, go go!

[identity profile] --kali--.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had a lot of the 'Yay! he'z ded' on my flist and I'm totally headdesking over it. I ralise it's not cool to admit - but I rather liked him. To me it's like cheering over David Attenborough getting eaten by penguins or something.

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Is it wrong that the mental image of Attenborough getting eaten by penguins makes me giggle?

I think it comes down to people react. They don't need to get all upset about it, just... not actively enjoy the fact he's dead, if that makes sense.

There have been some funny metaquotes about it, mind.

Here by FoF-list.

[identity profile] yuxonomei.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
*Peers in and waves*

I was gutted about Steve Irwin, not least because my son loves him and it takes a lot for an Autistic kid to get interested in something. He was a brilliant bloke, as mad as a bag of ferrets and everyone in my house loved him. Him, The Umbilical Brothers and The Wiggles have done far more for Australia than Neighbours did haha.

Anon meme? It's fun now, but yesterday was awful, mostly. I didn't like the way you, Nos et al were being shredded. Nor the way I was either.

Re: Here by FoF-list.

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I feel sorry on your son's behalf. :(

Irwin was... an annoying person, but not a bad one. And he was, if nothing else, entertaining.

I wasn't getting treated that bad by the meme, really. It was a bunch of comments in a short time, so I suspect it was the same few people, and since one of them admitted they only know me via f_w, and have a rather inaccurate image of me, I can live with it. I felt bad for Nos, though. And a few others.

The stuff that was said about you was ridiculous. Ban you from comms with under-18s because of your personal interests? That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard, and whoever said that is either trolling for wank, or a complete moron.

[identity profile] chicklet73.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I was actually sad to hear Steve Irwin died. For whatever anyone thought of his onscreen antics, it's like you said. He had a wife and kids and they must be broken hearted right now.

In an abrupt non-sequitur, thanks for posting a link to that Doctor Who filming vid!

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's all over the news in Australia now. Respectful, for the most part, with any jokes lacking in nastiness. The ït's the way he would have want to gone" thing has come up a bit, which sounds about right.

Non-sequitars are good.

[identity profile] maajaml.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I must admit that it's a little funny that Steve Irwin is dead.

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I think the way he died was kinda funny, considering the way he lived.

But I don't have it in me to be happy someone else has died.

[identity profile] maajaml.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
Me either.

Btw, I hope I didn't offense when I deleted the entry at that elite.

[identity profile] ephant.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading about Steve Irwin's conservation efforts and hearing about motivational speeches he gave really inspired me. His act, although fun in itself, was always a tool to obtain the funds he needed to buy the land for his conservation efforts. Someone who was willing to act like a fucking idiot on international television in order to conserve australian wildlife certainly has my respect. I never enjoyed his persona and was never interested in the Crocodile Hunter as an entertainer. But Steve Irwin was someone who I greatly admired and respected as a person.

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. He may have acted like an idiot, but he still did good things. Some respect is due.
