drakyndra: The Music Meister demands you sing! (Default)

Bitch, please.

You know, I love my fandoms, I honestly do. But there are times when they are too fucking stupid for words, and this has got to be one of those times.

Now, I'm not going to go into all the post-HBP shipper crap, and all the wangst stories of "JKR was SOOOOOO wrong and OOC. She should have written it MY way!!!!11one!" Been there, done that, got the fucking brain damage from it.

It's the new stuff that is really starting to shit me off.

First case in point: A letter posted into the Youth Forum section of The Herald Sun today, courtesy of one 15 year old girl.

In full, said letter reads;

"Is it just me or is JK Rowling trying to turn her fans against against her book's main characters?
Harry's childish outbursts are becoming a problem, and why on earth did he dump Ginny?
His scar is hideous, and his glasses are hardly a chick magnet."

The first sentence makes me want to point the girl in the direction of a good discussion group.

The second makes me want to ask if she actually read HBP. I mean, childish outbursts were an OotP thing, so I don't see where she is getting that idea from, and as for the other: Read. Fucking. Page. 602. It's all nice and clear in the text, dear. If you don't get it, you have some serious comprehension issues.

The last sentence, however, makes me want to scream and cry and beat the stupid girl over the head with my copy of HBP. What the hell does that have to do with anything, you idiot. I mean, seriously, WTF?

To the author of said letter: Bitch, please.

But my main issue is with the whole goddamn mess that's going down here.

So, some idiot journalist pulls a Rita Skeeter on JKR, and makes her sound like queen arrogant bitch. So, Terry Pratchett sends a letter to the paper, disagreeing with said journalist's phrasing. All of a sudden, fandom's gone apeshit, because now both Terry and JKR come out looking like arrogant, jealous brats, and the fanbase is suddenly at war.

READ THE FUCKING ARTICLES YOU MORONS!

To every idiot who is turning this into a big deal: Get out of my life, you are shitting me off.

I can think of far better things to do with fandom time than whinge about this rubbish, like theorise on Book 7 or writing some damned fanfic. Honestly!

*fumes*

Look, fandom, I love you, but would you please shut the fuck up.

This is why I write for approximately seventeen fandoms, because there's a good chance that even if one of them is screaming like a toddler denied her favourite lollies, another one of them will be being mature and discussing things over tea and scones, and another one will be smearing chocolate body paint on people and squealing, 'Wheee!'

I have...several. But HP is sort of dominating my flist right now. And, therefore, my brain.

And your metaphor was highly amusing, I have to say.

:-D

I have a lot of HP people on my flist too, but then, I also have a lot of Red Dwarf people, and a lot of LotR/21 Jump Street/anything with Elijah Wood or Johnny Depp in it/whatever crossbreeds, so the HP gets -- um -- diluted.

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2005-08-01 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Mine is mostly HP and Star Wars, but with a few Ffordians, a few Discworld fans, and quite a few multi-fandom types.

Though the multi-fandomers are mostly caught up in HP right now.

I don't mind the fic side of it, but the rantage is starting to piss me off.

I have a low tolerance for stupidity.

What pisses me off is the brainless ones who think the world has ended because their H/Hr dreams have been shattered. It's been foreshadowed since GoF that R/Hr would happen. Get the fuck over it!

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2005-08-01 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even bother to tell them off, because it's so ridiculous, it's funny.

They have the most mockable arguments, also.

Which is what fandom_wank is for, really.

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2005-08-01 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, very true. Fandom_wank is definitelty going on my next Links List.

What name does it say on the front of tHBP? J. K. Rowling.
It is her book, her characters, and her story line that she's building.

What I hate about those that write fandom is that by writing in someone else's world, they feel that they own a part of the characters. They think they know them better than the author does because they've seen the world through the characters' eyes and used them as puppets in scenarios that are completely irrelevant to Rowling's plot.

However, they have no idea what Rowling is up to, and it's totally up to her as to how the rest of the story will unfold.
I personally don't think that fandoms should be written for a story that hasn't been completed in full yet. I know it's a long wait, but if they are going to convince themselves that something is *definately* going to happen, then they should prepare themselves for a let down. The story's not over yet and there'll be suprises galore when it is.

They have no control over what happens. Only the author does.
They can interpret the books, aye, but they shouldn't claim them for their own. After all, Rowling has claimed her 'moral rights' to the books and those that read the books should repect that, no matter how good they think their alternate story is...

I hav eno problems with people writing fanfic and all - just as long as they are always aware that it is just fanfic, and when it comes to fandom, they have No. Say. Whatsoever.

Can't they just get over themselves already, and let the real authors get too work?

The fact that it tok me about 5 minutes to work out just what all of that was actually saying says an awful lot about me, I do believe.

I'd say those idiots are creating their own language, but that would be giving them too much credit.

[identity profile] altheas.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, it's just butchering an already incredibly complex language into something infintely more evil. Think of the effort it took you to translate it as a sign you aren't corrupted yet by the 133t ... *cough* leet side of English.

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I am a bit too literary, I believe. I mean, I tell people off for misspellings in MSN, so I automatically find leet a bit...off.

Though I still adore that leet subtitled RotS preview you showed me.

[identity profile] lafina.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Nah you've got to keep it seperate. 1337 is misspelling on purpose (at least if you're intelligent enought to know that a number can NEVER EVER substitute a letter (I mean, really...)) and for purposes of amusement. Bad spelling is just annoying. >|

Oh, and just on the side... leet isn't actually a language that evolved from chat-typos, it was created by gamers and started out with things liked "h4xx0r", "1337" and "pwn3d" and was resticted to team-speak originally, where it did no-one any harm. Chatters stole it, I tell you!

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. I think of leet in too catagories - the original kind, where it's used for just a few words, and then the (inferior) chatter kind, where everything is written that way, and no-one can read it.

Though this reminds me of the time my sister lost marks at school because she always wrote "you" as "u"...

[identity profile] altheas.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Leet does have its uses, such as for adding variety to passwords, but I do make a point of causing pain to anyone who goes round saying pwn3d in day to day usage.

I'll put together a compilation of hilarity, the collection has grown over the holidays.

[identity profile] fa11ing-away.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
heh *points to icon and runs awaaaay!*

[identity profile] altheas.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
You're safe, the icon lacks the perverted E. It's close enough to normal english for it to be tolerated.

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
But you're cutting it fine, missy!

[identity profile] altheas.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
DVD burnt, I'll be round 11-2ish tomorrow.

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
I shall see you then.

[identity profile] fa11ing-away.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, too fine if you include the fact that I have taken to saying 'w00t' outloud recently. Mwahaha!

[identity profile] lafina.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
*snickers*

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
*nods* You do that.

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2005-08-03 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's all her own fault, really.

[identity profile] lafina.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Haha. People like that are scary, yes. :O

[identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
It's so stupid, it's frightening.
