Spoilers for that new spoiler.

Oh look, it's our first walk-out promise.

Wow, that's what, 2 hours from the announcement being officially released?

How can they know they won't enjoy it? She won't have her first episode for another nine months.

Leaving because you don't enjoy something is one thing. Deciding you won't like something almost a year before it happens is just plain stupidity.

I actually got into an argument with a troll who was protesting the npot-yet-released Hitchhiker's Guide movie. I dared to suggest that she was perhaps a wee bit premature in forming her opinion of a film based on a single extremely one-sided review.

People are fuckin' idiots.

I wonder if these people are aware that judging without any experience or evidence is the very literal definition of prejudice.

I dunno. All I know is I was called "catty," which amused me for days. XD

Eh. Might know herself well enough to know what she won't like; I think we can count, for example, on Rose being mentioned very little if at all next year, and probably never after that, and if you like emotional continuity, being asked to immediately (and from the point of view of the show, it's pretty much immediate, within a couple of eps) to forget and reinvest nearly instantly in a new character is harsh.

Well, there's still the Christmas special to be getting on with (I am currently intrigued by how that's going to go, with no companion from the looks of things). And it's still, what, nine months?

Also, I sincerely doubt we are going to told to love her immediately. The Doctor will need to get to know her, and so shall the audience. But to do that, she needs to be given a chance.

But in this fandom that's nothing new - once they step out of that door for the last time they're not mentioned again. At least Rose is getting a proper send off - more than most Companion's did.

Yes, but this is a reboot, and a pretty drastically different one. As part of modernizing it, they opted to go with anchoring the companion with family and character growth, and there's a price to be paid for that; people get attached in ways they didn't used to. For all that I'm old-school Who, I do get a bit tired of people saying 'well, they used to do it, you shouldn't complain!' They used to do green bubblewrap monsters, too, but that doesn't mean I'd accept them doing so today.

As it happens, I like Ten fine, equally with Nine; but if you don't like Ten, and are watching for Rose -- and they have quite deliberately made the companion an emotional selling point, and old-school better get used to that -- it's not unreasonable to not be interested in making the commitment again.

but if you don't like Ten, and are watching for Rose

...than you have obviously missed the part of the title where it says Doctor Who.

There was a reason for the POV shift during the series.

And there's a reason why there's still so much time spent on the companion. They wouldn't spend so much time this season on Mickey and Jackie as well as Rose if we weren't supposed to care.

Hell, even in the old days the companion was often the selling or cutting point for viewers.

Aye. Which is why we are getting introduced to out new companion so early - so we know there will be Life After Rose. For all the criticism of the Beeb's timing, I think they know what they are doing.

Also, caring for one character doesn't mean to the exclusion of all others.
