He's never going to leave now that he's got the Beeb dancing to his own schedule, is he? I'm slightly bemused by that, but since I already felt sad about him leaving after S4, I think I'm mostly happy.
Yeah, I was all prepared to get used to the next Doctor, was getting prepped to like him and all, and then... not happening. I don't really know how to react.
And he has got them on a bit of string, hasn't he?
I can certainly understand them wanting to keep him on, but to postpone the show for a year? That's really something else. I'm thinking that the rest of the department, RTD included, leapt at the chance of a break after four years of working pretty much non-stop.
Could very well be - I haven't kept up with the Hi-Def thing. It just seems more like circumstances coming together than David throwing a diva-fit (which, yeah, not something I see happening at all).
Agreed - David seems the most un-divalike person ever. (Now I could see him saying he'd like to do more Who, but he wants to take on other commitments, and then being shocked when they announce they will cut back production so he can stick around longer...)
In my head, that's exactly how it happened. I imagine there was lots of blushing and flustering and protestations on his part - it's a really cute scenario (at least in my imagination).
Me too, would have put money on it if I had any. This is excellent news. I am busy laughing at the peeps on OG saying 'Why isn't he confirmed for Series 5?'
At least we have a guarantee it'll back after the break-ish thing.
But yes, I do hope we get lots of books and cartoons and all that other media to fill in the gap. (Think we might get a long running comic in DWM for the time?)
much as i like dt, i cannot at all manage to believe that any of this has anything to do with him. transfer to hd or rtd's way to get off the ship without rocking it too much seem far more likely.
Fandom should grow the hell up. This is excellent news. Three Who Specials in 2009 (I presume one will be for Christmas) and a fifth season in 2010. Giving Tennant time off to stretch his muscles. Giving Rusty time to write three solid specials. I kind of wish Season 5 was in 2009, but it's so far away... I don't really see the downside at the moment.
The only bad bit is less Who in 2009, really. Because more Tennant pleases me, the future is guaranteed until 2010, it's just the absence of a full series in 2009 that's a negative.
I do agree with that, yes. But 2009 is so far away, I'm having a hard time thinking of it too negatively. I also appreciate that the BBC is giving both Tennant and RTD a breather and not insisting they keep churning things out. Not that they've felt churned out so far, but by the fifth series of any show... people are liable not to be at the top of their game. (Unless they are Joss Whedon, for some reason.)
Plus there are the three specials and a guaranteed future for the show. That's a big deal.
I don't know if that's an advantage. Season 5 isn't great in comparison to Season 4, it's great in comparison to everything befor and after :-)
Also, Season 5 Angel is basically it's best season, too.
As for secure futures... Lost has a commitment until 2010 as well. But, yeah, most other shows have no such long-term commitment. Even big franchise shows like L&O or CSI probably only have commitments until 2009.
Ah, yes, I will agree with you there - the production team did seem to notice what was lacking in season 4 and improved on that in season 5.
I don't care about Lost either. Everyone who is still watching is a sucker... but at least with a three seasons-to-end commitment, the writers can plan how they might possibly wrap things up.
I never really got into Lost, but I have noticed that it is no longer splashed and hyped everywhere and anywhere - Heroes seems to be the current omnipresent TV show. Though I am less bothered, as from what I've seen Heroes is rather more towards my preferences...
I'd really like to know why it's going off the air for a year. Maybe DT has other big plans in the pipeline? Or they're going to focus more on the two spinoffs? Hmmmm..
Both RTD and Tennant probably would like a rest. And the BBC really don't want to lose either of them. I still suspect the three specials will be RTD's swan-song... a transition period between his tenure and whoever comes next. It probably gives whoever is in charge of Series Five more time to prepare.
The future of Tennant is less clear. After a year off with only three specials, he might welcome doing another season. And if by then he decides to leave, I expect he'd be back for the start of that series - so that the new writer can kick start the next regeneration...

The Novel writers are really going to have to raise the bar as they will probably be the only new Who we get over the next few months.

But yes, Doctor Who has a future secured until 2010, which is rather more than pretty much any show I can think of, let alone a genre show.

And Tennant is doing Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company next year, as well...
