Fandom should grow the hell up. This is excellent news. Three Who Specials in 2009 (I presume one will be for Christmas) and a fifth season in 2010. Giving Tennant time off to stretch his muscles. Giving Rusty time to write three solid specials. I kind of wish Season 5 was in 2009, but it's so far away... I don't really see the downside at the moment.
The only bad bit is less Who in 2009, really. Because more Tennant pleases me, the future is guaranteed until 2010, it's just the absence of a full series in 2009 that's a negative.
I do agree with that, yes. But 2009 is so far away, I'm having a hard time thinking of it too negatively. I also appreciate that the BBC is giving both Tennant and RTD a breather and not insisting they keep churning things out. Not that they've felt churned out so far, but by the fifth series of any show... people are liable not to be at the top of their game. (Unless they are Joss Whedon, for some reason.)
Plus there are the three specials and a guaranteed future for the show. That's a big deal.
I don't know if that's an advantage. Season 5 isn't great in comparison to Season 4, it's great in comparison to everything befor and after :-)
Also, Season 5 Angel is basically it's best season, too.
As for secure futures... Lost has a commitment until 2010 as well. But, yeah, most other shows have no such long-term commitment. Even big franchise shows like L&O or CSI probably only have commitments until 2009.
Ah, yes, I will agree with you there - the production team did seem to notice what was lacking in season 4 and improved on that in season 5.
I don't care about Lost either. Everyone who is still watching is a sucker... but at least with a three seasons-to-end commitment, the writers can plan how they might possibly wrap things up.
I never really got into Lost, but I have noticed that it is no longer splashed and hyped everywhere and anywhere - Heroes seems to be the current omnipresent TV show. Though I am less bothered, as from what I've seen Heroes is rather more towards my preferences...

But yes, Doctor Who has a future secured until 2010, which is rather more than pretty much any show I can think of, let alone a genre show.

People still care about Lost? I thought it was yesterday's news.
