So the last episode with the Ponds happened, and fandom was very... fandom about it.

As was I, with an added dash of lack of sleep, since someone [livejournal.com profile] yinake kept me awake on MSN talking about random stupid music and Game of Thrones and Code Geass and what if the Code Geass characters were part of Game of Thrones.

Yes, so, spoilers!

That time I went to New York and we saw the sights retroactively got kinda weird. )

So, that's that until Christmas, I suppose. iView so conveniently didn't include the mini-trailer for the episode, so I had to chase it down on the BBC website. It was very short, and I am mildly disappointed they didn't tell use the episode name.

But I can wait. And now the ficcers and vidders take charge of things.
Well that's what happens when your fandoms die off for a bit, at least in the LiveJournal region. (Though I suppose things will pick right back up again once Doctor Who gets going shortly)

I've still been reading things a bit, so sorry if I have lurked unforeseen, though I've currently been a bit more active on twitter or tumblr (if reblogging stuff counts as "active"), so if you want somewhere I am a bit more... participatory, you could try those. Or Facebook, but that's mostly IRL stuff, so if you would like to Friend me try asking over LJ PM.

But yes, my life has recently been filled with my volunteering, not hearing back from job applications, the occasional social event - I was at Manifest last weekend, which was fun-ish. I had Gendo sign my Death Note - and just... stuff.

The temporary housemate is due to move out this weekend, so hopefully one of the people who are coming to look at the room on Sunday will take it, or we may be in trouble. On the other hand iiNet has decided to upgrade out internet plan since the one we were on has now ceased to exist, so yay downloading things?

Also, both my parents are currently overseas. Naturally, when my Mum arrived in Turkey, the first question she texted was to ask if I wanted her to buy me a hat. As one does.

Oh, and I got a ridiculously overdue haircut yesterday.

So yeah, life.
Well, I had a (relatively) interesting weekend. Went to a trivia night on Sunday, and my team did not actually come last, so huzzah for that. So we won a packet of Tim-Tams, which is all good.

Plus, I went and watched The Legend of Korra (well, all of it that's out so far), which was pretty decent recent, though I really need to get some better quality downloads there, since image quality was... not great on mine. The music was lovely though. Enjoying it so far, and it looks both fun and interesting, but one look at the fandom and I think I shall steer clear from most of that. I can see wankiness brewing on the horizon. I'll stick around for the icons, though.

Oh, and thanks for whomever on Facebook for informing me that A). Douglas Adam's Dirk Gently books have been made into a TV series, and B). It started on ABC this evening. Dirk looks nothing like he was described in the books, and I am still trying to decide if the depiction and story changes are intentionally a mildly mockery of BBC!Sherlock or if that's just me reading too much in.

Then today I experimented with cooking again - well, made that curried lentil soup again, which was still nommy, and experimented with grilled balsamic mushrooms and (purple) carrots, which almost worked.

And I suppose the next few days will be busy, too. Volunteering tomorrow, then on Wednesday I believe I am due to see Avengers with [livejournal.com profile] neo_leviathan and... others. So there's that.

In other news, I rather need a haircut, anyone know somewhere decent around Melbourne, that will do something interesting to it without costing too much?

Also this is very possibly the most terrifying bit of Evangelion advertising I have ever seen.
Well, I just spent most of the last few days at this years Supanova.

I normally only go in for one day, so the whole weekend thing was a bit new (and a bit exhausting), but then again I've generally had actual things on during the week, which I need the chance to sleep in a bit more. At the moment... well, I can sleep in tomorrow.

I didn't end up getting any autographs or photos with anyone - sorry, I just find it all so very over-priced - but I did see a bunch of panels. Summer Glau, Morena Baccarin, Wil Wheaton and the Phelps twins from HP. Also Jaimie Alexander (Sif from Thor). Oh, and some of the Cosplay, and the FMA:B movie on Friday night, and caught up with [livejournal.com profile] lizbee and [livejournal.com profile] connikins and a bunch of other people I know (and some whose faces were vaguely familiar).

Actually I spent most of today wandering around with Connie, who seems to run into people she knows everywhere.

I didn't really cosplay anything, but I did dress up - I'll post pictures if I find any online - both days in corsets and bustles and hats and whatnot. Saturday with my eBay parasol with a sort of black and white and red theme, while today was sort of Queen of the Goths, as I claimed I was dressed as to someone.

Also ended up repeatedly talking corsets with a guy in a dress (and corset) who was very well informed.

The FMA movie was fun enough - I mean, yeah, filler movie, so it didn't exactly add anything profound to the FMA universe (Though the manga is pretty perfect, so it's not as if it needs anything...), but at least it didn't do anything horrific to the characters. And the action scenes were wonderfully animated - I know there was some debate on the quality of the animation as a whole, but I mostly liked it. And plus points for some interestingly morally gray characters (technically, terrorists I suppose) dealing with colonisation.

The main issues were basically pacing - it was sort of ACTION...long period of set-up and exposition... DRAMA AND ACTION - and that when you get down to it the story was more about the new characters than the established ones. Which wasn't necessarily a bad story (and at times had some interesting reflections on the Elric brothers), it's just, you know, you go to an FMA movie for the Fullmetal Alchemist and pals. Not other people.

I do, though, sort of want to see fic about the characters from it. Maybe Julia seeing Ed again post series, or something?

Oh, and pretty typically for a con, I ended up buying a bunch of stuff. Some manga volumes from series I haven't finished; some Daleks to add to my Dalek army (including a plush one that talks when you squeeze it); A plush Threetie from Mawaru Penguindrum; A random book that was going cheap; a Nerv key-ring; a plush tentacle (...don't ask).
Well, all the exhaustingness aside, sometimes work has it's rather good points.

Like today, in which some bloke whose door I knocked decided to give me a free bottle of Sauvignon Blank.

I mean, free wine! How can one say no to that?

The rest of the day ended pretty well too, surprisingly so given how little sleep I had. I shall endeavor not to let that happen again, I suppose.

As for the long weekend, I enjoyed it's longness. Multiple days in a row of sleeping in! Plus we had one of those fannish meetups, which was rather fun. And then after I went and had Venezuelan food for dinner with some of the girls, got complimented on my hat by some random old guy, and then had ice-cream.

There should be more days like that.
So, that makes the first week of the sales job. As I said in the last post, first day was mostly just PowerPoint and paperwork; second involved more listening in to information and the like at the office, Thursday I followed around one of the more experienced types to get an idea of things, and on Friday I went off on my own (and actually made two sales!)

The main thing I've gotten out of it all is sunburn, and a need for sleep. Though that might partially just be because I need to get myself back on a fairly regular schedule.

Otherwise, last night I ended up going to Steam Up, with what turned out to be a rather large number of my friends. I got to wear a corset that I got on eBay which I believe is a Made in China knockoff of some fancier designer and literally just arrived the knight before the event, and had rather a bit of fun watching the shows they had going. Drinks were expensive, too.

I also haven't had a huge amount of time to keep up with everything online lately, so just what's up?
Busy, busy weekend. (For those who recall my post from the other week, this was the weekend where everyone Invited Me To Things.)

Saturday night was at the tennis, where we saw Andy Murray beat some French guy named Michael Llodra, whom I'd never heard of before the match, but whose personality rather won me over even though he lost. And then we saw a Legends doubles match, which was basically a bunch of retired players being silly on court and showing off trick shots. And occasionally changing teams midway through a rally. Not exactly a high status matched, but it was rather entertaining.

After that I managed to run off and catch the end part of one of my invites, an 18th birthday I'd been invited to. I missed the games, but showed up in time to grab some stuff from the bar, before the cake, and see some burlesque performances. And still managed to catch the last tram home!

Then this morning Mum texted to see if I wanted to go see The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo (American version) with her. So I went and did that - I can probably provide some thoughts on the movie, and how it compares to the book (I haven't seen the Swedish versions of the films, unfortunately) if asked - and had some lunch, and then I went and wandered around the city for a bit.

Also: tried to decide what sort of blender and/or digital camera to get from Harvey Norman. The results so far are inconclusive.

My weekend, every body! The end.

Here, have a Maru fanvid. Or Ralph Fiennes reading Voldemort/Harry pornfic.
So, today it is Friday the 13th. Somehow this fact managed to escape my notice until yesterday, when someone else pointed it out to me.

And speaking of yesterday, ended up going out for drinks for Ollie's birthday with what ended up being a rather large turn out. So there ended up being a whole mob of us at the Asian bar, having pizza for dinner, as one does. (Okay, the pizzas were cheap for a while).

The bar also had Ladies Night, which meant $1 glasses of champagne for women (or men who dressed as women, as the sign pointed out).

Yeah, lots of cheap champagne happened. Also, some guy tried to talk me into having a threesome with him.

Ah, social life.

Incidentally: if any other Melbourne types have plans for anything coming up, can they please not be for the 21st of January? Everyone keeps sending me invites to things on that day, which means I have to turn down lots of things I'd want to do.

On the anime side of things, I see that Code Geass fandom has got a bit of flailing going on because TPTB have finally gotten off their arses and announce details of the new projects. Well, we still don't know whether that Akito thing is an OVA or TV series, and to be honest the trailer didn't really instantly grab me, so we shall wait and see.

On the other hand, after all my flailing we will finally get that Geass Musical I was hoping for, which fills me with great glee (Though some slight WTF at the all male cast). The Nunnally in Wonderland thing seems like it'll just make for some fun crack, there's some Knightmare related manga thing which I am less interested in. As for the supposed Geass movie remake, apparently having movies is the current big thing for popular anime series.

So, Code Geass attempting to become the next Gundam: Y/N?

And a few random links of things that have amused me lately:
- Is Draco Malfoy A Git? The transcription of a court case in which Malfoy is attempting to sue Ron Weasley for libel.

It so figures that when I was looking for decent HP fic a while back I couldn't find it, so naturally I stumble across this author completely by accident. This one-shot is a fun stand-alone fic (which has fun with the whole UK Libel Laws and how they don't apply to true statements). The rest of the author's fics are mostly in their own personal post-series (and mostly interview compliant) canon, and they have an interpretations I mostly enjoy - it manages to be different and creative without destroying everything I liked about canon. A personal fave is their WIP Strangers at Drakeshaugh, which can basically be summed up as "Harry and Ginny move to the country so their kids have space to play and can go to a Muggle school, as told from the perspective of a Muggle neighbour who makes friends with Ginny". I do love outsider perspectives on things.

And over on YouTube, I've found The Amazing Art that can be made with packing tape, and The Joy of Books, which really needs to be seen. Not only does it look great, imagining the work involved seems pretty mindblowing.

Also, The Page Turner, for those of you who like Rube Goldberg machines (like me).
Well, that was a rather busy weekend, after all.

On Friday evening I went to go see Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows with what ended up being a rather larger group than I had expected. But hey, we got to have a great big movie watching clump in the audience.

Non-spoilery comment on the movie: Decent fun, but another sequel that isn't as good as the original. And something felt off about the pacing though I couldn't say exactly what.

Also, despite being thoroughly spoiled for Okay, movie spoilers behind here )

...Those comments seem grumpy than I really felt about it. Huh.

The other big event of the weekend was seeing the Dresden Dolls in concert last night. Had dumplings for dinner with a few friends to start off with, then wandered down to the Forum (which had the most amazingly epic door line I had ever seen - what happens, I suppose, when you show up just before the doors open, so everyone is there bust still outside.)

I sat up the back for most of the support acts, and then migrated forward in front of the stage for the Dolls started (mostly trying to avoid having tall people standing in front of me). The show itself was great fun; lots of their best known songs, including some of my favourites (I can never resist Mandy Goes to Med School), plus some really fun covers. I have to applaud them for doing Fight for Your Right To Party. Or a rather nice take on The Mercy Seat.

Also, the curtain call performance of Mein Herr from Cabaret, which started with Amanda in the audience and involved her later crowd-surfing up to the stage. (She went right over my head, too.)

And then I found out today that one of my housemates is over in Europe. Which he hadn't actually told me about in advance.

So that was my weekend. How about you guys?
Today I come bearing news. And random sciencey videos from YouTube. (It's what I do when I'm bored, okay?)

- So, they found a corpse on the Queen's estate. I think I can hear the conspiracy theories coming into existence as I speak. Type. Whatever.

- In the latest casting news from the upcoming Star Trek movie, both Noel Clarke (aka Mickey from Doctor Who) and Benedict Cumberbatch have been given roles. Which, as I commented on Twitter is going to cause so many BBC crossovers to come into existence.

Also, so much fannish crossing of the streams, really.

- Have the 10 most common New Year's Resolutions in the form of... Cat Macros. Eee, stackable cats!

- I highly approve of this art exhibition, which I wish I could have seen. It starts with a pure white room (including furniture). Then kids are given coloured stickers to place wherever they want.

...Actually, be careful of that site. Some of the art stuff they show is amazing.

- And some arty/sciencey YouTube videos: Non-Newtonian Fluid on a Speaker Cone (IT'S ALIVE!) and Fluid Sculpture (To quote one of the comments, "Best silly straw ever!")

Yes, finding this is the kind of stuff I find online. But it's fun!

In other news, I will apparently be going to see Sherlock Holmes 2 tomorrow with [livejournal.com profile] neo_leviathan and ...others, and then Dresden Dolls is on Sunday. Hey, [livejournal.com profile] connikins, [livejournal.com profile] ephant, you feel like having dinner somewhere before the show?

ETA: So, I couldn't not link to what is possibly the greatest actual headline ever. (Note: This is not a joke report.) Airline Pilot Startled by Flying Shark
drakyndra: The Music Meister demands you sing! (Watchmen: Pretty Awesome)
( Jan. 1st, 2012 10:37 pm)
Well, would you look at that. Another year through, and now it's 2012. We'll all have to watch out for that apocalypse that's coming up, won't we?

But for now, Happy New Year, all.

No resolutions here, because I've never really seen the point in them.

I spent New Year's Eve heading down Frankston way with Lara and a few others. (Yes, I know, the wilderness of Zone 2). We had copious amounts of barbecued food, splashed around in the pool a bit - not actually that much last night, because once it started to get dark the water was rather cold - drunk a bit (obviously), and played board games.

Well, "The Margaret & David At The Movies Boardgame" to be precise, which I ended up winning. Not sure if that means I know far too much about random pointless movie trivia, or I hadn't had enough to drink.

We also sort of could see the fireworks when midnight arrived. Distantly.

Naturally, the weather for the last few days (and for the forthcoming couple, too) has been ridiculously hot - 40 degrees Celsius tomorrow! - so I suspect I'm going to be spending the next few says bumming around my room, with it's Air Con.

What'd everyone else get up to?
I see it doesn't take much being in Melbourne time for there to be stuff going on. Hooray for keeping busy.

Because courtesy of the great resource that is twitter, yesterday afternoon I heard that there was going to be a free ninja gig at the city library with Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer.

So, I rushed down there with one of my housemates (and, later, Grace, whom I had known until then lived that close by on my tram line) to see them. Didn't manage to show up early enough to get a seat, but I could see fairly fine, and so got to hear two short story readings from Neil and ...several songs from Amanda. And her ukelele. I'm sure they'll show up on YouTube sooner or later.

And then after I got Neil to sign my copy of Good Omens, and got a picture with him (...which is on my camera, so not yet on the computer), and had Amanda sign my metcard. Because, you know, I had it in my bag.

Then I went with some people to have dumplings for dinner. The end. Huzzah!

But it was a fun way to fill an afternoon. I approve of this ninja gig thing.

...Though I am also reminded that I need to chase up [livejournal.com profile] ephant so I can pay her back for the Dresden Dolls ticket. Which is only a bit over a week away, now I think of it.

In other news, the enormous nature strip TV that the housemates found in my previous post has been fiddled with and is now working fine, sitting in the middle of the living room. Hooray for free TVs!
Well, we now seem to have the iPartment back, windows and all, even if the construction guys left rather a mess. I am not impressed with the sawdust all over my books, of my now broken Newton's Cradle.

I mean, they broke my science!

Also, I still have to put stuff in my room back where it belongs. And rehang my curtains.

They actually finished up on Saturday - which was not without it's problems, I assure you. My housemate checked with the office, and they said that the tradesmen would be arriving at about 9am, so I was sitting around waiting for them then. For the next three hours.

After some minor freaking out and trying to chase people down on their mobiles (because no-one seems to answer on weekends), I ended up finding out that the tradesmen were planning on arriving at 1pm, and had no idea about the 9am time I was given. Who knows what happened there.

So I headed off and spent the afternoon hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] cat_empress, wandering around this Fair Trade/Enviro friendly fair thing at Federation square. Which was interestingly different (or not so different, since I'd seen some of the stalls at the Night Market), but it's always nice to properly meet up with people you've only known online.

I hope you're enjoying the little plush echidna you got, [livejournal.com profile] cat_empress.

Then after that I met up with my sister and father and his gf and we went to a rather fancy Japanese restaurant for dinner. Mmmm, tempura vegetables.

And then I just got to bum around for the rest of the weekend, listening to random music I downloaded.

Anyway, one of the positive parts of all this fuss over the windows is that I now have the kitchen back, so I celebrated by testing out this recipe for vegetarian laksa for dinner. Which actually mostly worked out, it just need more spices. I wonder if there is a way to spice up microwave leftovers? (Recipe was for two servings, so I have Tupperware of laksa in the fridge).

And now for your regular dose of random entertaining links:
- The Harry Potter theme played on Piano, in "every style known to man". It's old, but still rather entertaining. And I'm very impressed by the improv skills.
- The mysterious paper sculptures of Scottish libraries. I had actually seen some of these before, but now there are more of them: 10 in total. That's a whole lot of creative effort.
- Photos of water splashes that look like hats. Hey, it's me. How could I not link this?
So [livejournal.com profile] fa11ing_away's birthday rather did end up dominating my evening. Both the party itself and preparing for it on Sunday (including my discovery that you can buy bottles of Midori that come in bottle shaped cocktail shakers).

And yes, there was ball-gowning on public transport.

Party was rather fancy, because most people seemed to really stick with the theme, masks and swishy clothes and all. Also, there was a chocolate fountain, which makes most things great.

I ended up sticking around until Ridiculous A.M., and was planning to get an early tram home for shower and sleep, but I think I feel asleep while lying on the floor, which meant by the time I got home and had some sleep, most of Sunday was gone, too.

So much for the weekend.

But today I turned in that assignment I completed online, and then worked on my last assignment. I'm mostly done now, just need to do a statement of intention, and then fiddle around with formatting and editing.

But after I hand that in on Wednesday, I shall be free! At least for a few more months, anyway.

And for today's dose of random entertainment, I give you:
...The Mapping Stereotypes Project. Or, how bigots see the world.
...A UK computer store's Star Wars ad campaign. I have to wonder how George Lucas feels about this.
...Old people in China covering "Bad Romance" on satellite TV. The Internet really does have everything nowadays.
Well, one assignment has been completed (and as I was rather intending, before [livejournal.com profile] fa11ing_away's birthday bash this weekend), leaving me just one thing to do this semester. And the thing I finished isn't even due until Monday. It also has a table with pretty rainbow colours.

Of course, it just happens to be the one which requires some creative use of ICT. Yeah, so I'll have to ponder that for a bit.

Oh, and speaking of [livejournal.com profile] fa11ing_away's birthday party, (masquerade themed, for those not in the know), I have sorted out my outfitness. There was a mild issue with my mask and my dress not matching very well, but I have come up with a cunning plan to make my colour scheme work. Now I'll just need to work out public transport arrangements when wearing what is basically a ball gown. Huzzah!

So what is up with you guys in LJ land? Aside from the ones I have chatted to, recently.

And your daily supply of linked nifty things:
- I could legally get Batman number plates for my car. If I actually owned a car, that is. But points for that, Victoria.
- And since I'm talking Batman, the Book of Batman. Of course someone is making a Batman bible.
- Magic cards with googly eyes. It's hilariously adorable! And actually makes me think Magic is vaguely interesting for once.
Slightly early, yes, but last night was [livejournal.com profile] notalwaysweak's annual Halloween party, so a bit of getting into the spirit of things early. (Also, Halloween is actually on Monday, so...)

This year's theme was Musicals, which meant there ended up being numerous Rocky Horror and Pirate peoples around. Plus two Elphaba/Wicked Witches.

I ended up going (courtesy of "I forgot what the theme was until earlier this week") as Carmen from, well, Carmen. Red gypsy skirt, black lace wrap, pretty easy. Even if I ended up with a few people asking if I was someone from Moulin Rouge.

I had vaguely considered going as someone from Chicago, but seeing as I was catching public transport, out into the wilds of Zone 2 suburbs, I didn't really want to be wandering around dressed like a prostitute.

Anyway, fun party with the expected copious amounts of pre-catered foods and assorted BYO things - such as Darren's gloop. We watched some random old AMVs - emphasis on random and old there, watched through Rocky Horror, sort of, while playing some games, and played Rock Band - I was pretty terrible at it.

Plus the normal, you know, socialising with people and/or their cats. Some of them I hadn't seen in ages, so it was good to catch up. The people I mean, though I suppose it applies to the cats too.

I'm sure there are some photos floating around on Facebook. Anyone else doing/done anything much interesting for Halloween?

And on a seasonal note, I give you a deeply disturbing music video: Big Bad Wolf. It is neither work safe, or brain safe.
So, did everyone enjoy the Rapture yesterday?

I went to Piper's birthday-slash-Apocalypse party, complete with a bunch of people in costumes -I was too lazy to come up with something apocalypse themed. Plus, I was handing out on Sydney Road before it - including several deaths, an Arthur Dent, and a Doctor (Eleventh, to be precise.

They had a smoke machine! And a playlist of tangentially apocalypse-themed music. Also, quite predictably, alcohol and socialising, which meant catching up with a few people whom I hadn't seen in a while.

More people should have themed birthdays. And besides, next year is 2012, which gives lots of room for apocalyptic parties.

Sydney Road was also rather entertaining, also. Some guy dressed up as the Queen, selling Monarchy dishrags, and I found a place that sold 25 varieties of hot chocolate. (I tried Lime Hot Chocolate, which tasted a bit like white chocolate and lime.)

All in all, a decent break from assignmenting, since my group assignment for ALT has been passed around via email quite a bit over the last few days. Well, at least it'll be out of the way on Wednesday.

And tomorrow I shall be at Armaggedon (...the convention), so if any Melbourne types will be there, let me know.

Since my last video link seemed so popular, today I bring you: CSI: Legoland. All the puns you could ever want!
Also, on tumblr there is Weird Evangelion Official Art, proving it's not just Geass that has resorted to strange art to sell there merch when they aren't airing.
My, what an entertaining weekend.

So, on Friday when I was wandering around the city for a bit, I was wooed into buying a dress because the shop was giving out free champagne. Which I suppose works out as a net profit for them. Now I need something nice to go to so I can wear the dress.

Then on Saturday I went to an 18th birthday in the city - yes, I apparently do know people who have just turned 18, it was a surprise to me too - which went rather as most 18th would be expected to go. AKA bar, pub, bar, karaoke bar, in that order.

Okay, the karaoke bar was a bit different, but I can now say I have been to one. Pity those other people went and stole our song. We were going to sing Bohemian Rhapsody.

And today was slightly less active, seeing as I spent the morning sleeping things off, but I did finally get around to seeing this week's episode of Penguindrum. To which my response can mostly be summed up as Cut for Episode 14 spoilers )

However, despite it's recent release I am yet to read the new Pratchett book, since my copy hasn't arrived yet. *sigh* At least I have thus far avoided spoilers, aside from a few small ones.

Oh, and I found out via Facebook that my sister's housemate is engaged. That's modern technology for you. Surprisingly enough, I have actually met her fiance, too.

Random question for peoples: Next weekend, I have been invited to an Apocalypse themed party (A friend has their birthday on the 21st, which is supposedly Rapture Day. At least according to that dude who previously said it was in May.) There is a call for Apocalypse themed costumes. Anyone got any suggestions for something apocalypse-themed I could go as? Preferably something that won't take too much effort to make
So, assignment I was working on in last post is now over and done with (well, putting aside editing and rewording) - which to my surprise got done on a Friday, when it wasn't even due until Monday. Wonders never cease.

I suppose I should work on the other thing due Wednesday tomorrow.

So, today I ended up doing some social type things, mostly involved in a Teddy Bears' Picnic I was invited to, of all things. But it involved socialising and foods, so it was all good. Hung out at the Flinders St steps for a bit waiting to meet people for it, and randomly saw some guy in a Fourth Doctor Scarf, and even more randomly someone in a Massacre Princess/blood-stained Euphie outfit.

Was there some unknown cosplay thing on in Melbourne today, or was someone just wearing that for the hell of it?

I didn't end up bringing a teddy bear, instead I brought plushy Death and cake. And the whole picnic lunch ended up going for about 4 hours over three different locations, so there's that.

And after I wandered with Yuhan and Alex up to some gaming shop to kill time by playing board games. And I didn't lose, huzzah!

...Yes, these things amuse me. But it's either talking about that, or Mawaru Penguindrum, since we seem to have got to the point in the series where my comments on the reaction post all seem to be getting the TL;DR penguin on account of theories. And Ikuhara mindfuck.

Speaking of TL;DR and theories, does anyone read the Leviathan trilogy, by Scott Westerfeld? Sort of steampunk AU WW1 era series, featuring a secret heir to an empire and a girl dressed as a boy so she can join the (equivalent to the) air force?

I took some time off from assignmenting earlier this week and finished Goliath, the last in the trilogy, and I have feelings. I kinda want talk meta-y with people about the ending - at possibly contrast with Terry Pratchett's Nation on a certain point.

Anyone willing to join in chat?

ETA: Okay, some spoilers in the comments (for Goliath and Nation).
So, last night after Bistromathics at Uni, I wandered around with Tristan and a few other people for gelati and booze (...not at the same time).

Anyway, one of the places we ended up at was Red Pocket, a new place Tristan had heard of that was Japanese themed and served a lot of sake and sake cocktails.

Included on their menu was one drink - sake and absinthe based - you got which was served on fire.

It was called "Fukushima".

I am still not sure if that is amusing or rather inappropriate.

It has a different name on the online cocktail list, I note.

I have a picture I took with my phone, but the quality isn't really great.
