Well, that was a rather busy weekend, after all.

On Friday evening I went to go see Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows with what ended up being a rather larger group than I had expected. But hey, we got to have a great big movie watching clump in the audience.

Non-spoilery comment on the movie: Decent fun, but another sequel that isn't as good as the original. And something felt off about the pacing though I couldn't say exactly what.

Also, despite being thoroughly spoiled for Irene Adler getting fridged, I still expected her to turn out alive in the end after faking her death. (Hey, script guys: If you do a third in the series, having Irene have faked her death and Watson find out towards the start of the next film would be a great way to set things up for the inevitable moment when Watson finds Holmes alive again.)

Also, they were really damned blatant with their Chekhov's guns. Which, you know, sort of took away from the deductions and all.

And I think they rather overdid their swoopy slow-mo thing. It worked fine as a demonstration of Holmes intelligence; occuring for real just messed with that.

...Those comments seem grumpy than I really felt about it. Huh.

The other big event of the weekend was seeing the Dresden Dolls in concert last night. Had dumplings for dinner with a few friends to start off with, then wandered down to the Forum (which had the most amazingly epic door line I had ever seen - what happens, I suppose, when you show up just before the doors open, so everyone is there bust still outside.)

I sat up the back for most of the support acts, and then migrated forward in front of the stage for the Dolls started (mostly trying to avoid having tall people standing in front of me). The show itself was great fun; lots of their best known songs, including some of my favourites (I can never resist Mandy Goes to Med School), plus some really fun covers. I have to applaud them for doing Fight for Your Right To Party. Or a rather nice take on The Mercy Seat.

Also, the curtain call performance of Mein Herr from Cabaret, which started with Amanda in the audience and involved her later crowd-surfing up to the stage. (She went right over my head, too.)

And then I found out today that one of my housemates is over in Europe. Which he hadn't actually told me about in advance.

So that was my weekend. How about you guys?

I've heard surprisingly positive things about the new Holmes movie. I was so exasperated with the heavy-handed brain candiness of the first one that I didn't have any intention of seeing the second, but I am a weak thing and people say it was all right. Damn. Do you think it was worth the money?

Well, it is pretty fun, but "brain candy" is a pretty accurate term for it really. It's been a while since I saw the first, but from what I recall this one has less clues and deducting (though it does have some pretty decent scheming and plotting going on between Holmes and Moriarty) and a lot more action scenes of the pretty but not needing to be that long type.

I liked the first, and still thought this was decent, but if you weren't a fan of the first... maybe go if you can get discount tickets or something (Or a friend pays for your ticket). I don't think it's worth full price if you didn't like the first.

Well, I guess the first was enjoyable for what it was--it's the subtext played for laughs ad nauseum that I find tiring. Ah well. Maybe it will come out on Netflix eventually.

Yeah, there's still a lot of that going on, though for some reason it seemed less... ambiguous to me. Not entirely sure why.

Both my husband and I independently ASSUMED Irene is So Very Very Not Dead, and are a bit baffled that more people aren't doing likewise. Which doesn't make the fridging much less annoying, since it's clearly intended to be believed, but.

I think whether or not you'd assume that depends on how familiar you are with the character and her reputation.

But yeah, it is as death's go rather ambiguous. I don't think we ever actually see her dead.
