I can certainly understand them wanting to keep him on, but to postpone the show for a year? That's really something else. I'm thinking that the rest of the department, RTD included, leapt at the chance of a break after four years of working pretty much non-stop.

I personally think the move over to Hi-Def might have something to do with it as well. Because aren't all BBC shows supposed to be changing over soon?

Could very well be - I haven't kept up with the Hi-Def thing. It just seems more like circumstances coming together than David throwing a diva-fit (which, yeah, not something I see happening at all).

Agreed - David seems the most un-divalike person ever. (Now I could see him saying he'd like to do more Who, but he wants to take on other commitments, and then being shocked when they announce they will cut back production so he can stick around longer...)

In my head, that's exactly how it happened. I imagine there was lots of blushing and flustering and protestations on his part - it's a really cute scenario (at least in my imagination).
