drakyndra: The Music Meister demands you sing! (Doctor Who: Door Licking)

Drakyndra cooks! (And it doesn't go terrifyingly wrong)

Firstly, welcome to n00bs from the Code Geass friending meme! Feel free to enjoy my excessive doses of random silliness. You can backread if you want, but my current lack of old tags *pointed look at LJ staff* will make things a bit more difficult to work through.

But anyway, I suppose on the plus side of not being highly productive at the moment is that I have more time to do random shit around the iPartment. Like, for instance, actual cooking experiments.

Well, not so much experiments, since it's following recipes, but I made pasta primavera last night and it was actually quite nice (even if I do now have another two days worth of pasta now sitting in the fridge). Plus I have ingredients in the fridge for vegetable soup (again), and a curry with tofu and sweet potato.

...I think I just wanted to have some fresh vegetables, really.

So new Harry Potter movie means new Harry Potter ship wank. I don't know what fandom would be like without it. Never change, HP fandom, never change.

I still haven't seen that movie. Anyone free later this week for a visit at some time soon?

Also (and I think [livejournal.com profile] lizbee will like this one), people now have evidence that there is such thing as flying squid. I eagerly await the inevitable terrible horror movie that this discovery will inspire.

ETA: On Twitter, the current topics trending all seem to be about either the North and South Korea thing... or Joss Whedon. What interesting priorities you have, Twitterverse.

Internet Entitlement: Volume 2

So, who's heard about the latest big online shenanigans?

So, a random blogger found out that a blog post she wrote a few years back had been published in a magazine - without anyone asking her permission. Naturally, she went and contacted the magazine, to ask why this happened, and for a token fee (to be donated to an institution she chose).

The magazine's editor... did not agree to these requests, claimed anything on the Internet is public domain, and was basically very rude. The blogger decided to publicise the incident, it caught the eye of some online notables.

And lo, the Internet did descend.

That editor had really no idea what she was in for. And now word is that she also took recipes from some cooking celebs and freaking Disney and dear Lord they will have to invent new words for just how screwed she is.

The lessons to be learnt today: Don't be really freaking dumb about copyright; politeness can prevent all sorts of problems; and the almighty forces of the Internet will fuck your shit up.

(It's just so wonderfully entertaining. *sniff*)

So, who wants to hear all about fannish entitlement?

Well, the magic that is Fandom_Wank (and associated comms) currently seems determined to give me some Harry Potter fandom flashbacks at the moment. And not exactly in the good way.

For starters, FictionAlley is asking people to vote for it as a charity deserving grant money! Instead of, you know, the actual charities it is competing against which including things like animal shelters, combating human trafficking and supplies for homeless children.

I'm fairly certain my opinion on this has already expressed by someone else far more eloquently than I could managing, but dear God, FA, what the hell are you thinking? I haven't been to FA or it's forums in years now, but back in my pre-LJ days it was one of my introductions to the social part of fandom. And to see something that once mattered to me demonstrate this sort of audacious and utter shamelessness is horrifing. I just... how could anyone possibly think that this was the right thing to do?

Egads.

A less horrifying flashback to the glory days of HP-dom is Aja's grand and glorious TL;DR about the difficulties of being a BNF. I think I speak for us all when I say, oh Aja.

Truly, a week for first world problems.

And to get away from bizarre Potter flashbacks, News.com.au would like to apologise for getting their Star Trek facts wrong. And to inform us that Patrick Stewart is hot. No, really. I am not lying about that last bit.

Also, what the hell has LJ done to comment formatting, and what happened to all my icon names?

I did laundry and grocery shopping today. That's productive, right?

Wow, I haven't updated for an entire week. Shows how exciting my life has been lately. Anyone care to link me to anything interesting going on online/in the news/whatever?

Anyway, last night I went to [livejournal.com profile] altheas and [livejournal.com profile] lena_supercat's place for a House Cooling party. (Like a housewarming, but in reverse!) Which meant meeting up for a whole lot of people I haven't seen in quite a while. And I seem to have stuff on for the next few Saturdays, so at least I'll have things on on weekends. Plus there's a few things I need to get sorted during the week. I may be going to a Halloween party next weekend...

And for some entertainment value: LOL, Snapewank time again. The Snapefen - no, sorry, Severusmoms - are at it again. This time: claiming he's still alive, really!

And a Kirk/Spock fanvid of great lulz.

Okay, less happy now.

And I didn't get the job. Boo. Apparently it was given to someone with more experience. Godammit I hate stupid experience. It's not my fault, I kind of need a job to get that experience. *sulks*

Back to job hunting I shall go. *sigh*

Some random stuff that is less depressing:
- Today I walked past a place offering discount "vajazzling". Truly, I sometimes need reminders that the universe really is cracktastic. WTF, Melbourne?
- I got to wear the boots I bought last week. They were all white and made me feel kind of Alex Drake. Only without heels, because I needed some flat boots.
- What starts as offensive research fail in a Christopher Pike book ends up revealing the author sockpuppeting reviews of his own books. God I love me some sock-puppet wank. I think I even used to read his books back when I was a kid. Anyone else remember Spooksville?

So, what happens with all the jokes about Collingwood fans now?

Ahahaha, oh man, the Grand Final was a draw! I find this utterly hilarious, for some reason. Apparently there will be a rematch next weekend; I'm not entirely sure how Melbourne is going to cope until then.

I'm far too amused by this for my own good, aren't I?

Other things that are currently amusing me:

- Doctor Who wank. And as I said in the comments, for once it's not about shipping or the companion wars.

- Naked Guy on a Horse showjumping. Nothing particularly graphic; deeply lulzy (I think it's the music that does it)

I'm pretty certain there a lot of tangents in this post that made more sense in my head

That ended up being surprisingly interesting for a day in which I was just expected to go into the city and then back home after lunch.

Anyways, someone on [livejournal.com profile] melbournemaniac was selling a whole bunch of manga second-hand very cheap, so I went and bought some stuff. Which meant I ended up going into the CBD to pick up a pile of volumes of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Yays for pretty CLAMP art!

Of course on the way in it was really freaking windy- when I was crossing the road, my poor hat got blown off and almost got run over. Fortunately the car stopped before that unmitigated tragedy could occur. I mean, that was the original hat. Luck was obviously on my side today.

But yeah, picked up my bag o'manga, had Hare Krishna food for lunch (Speaking of which, I have to wonder just how old I actually look. No-one ever asks for ID when I buy drinks, but people still assume I am a student just by looking at me.), bought a few bits and pieces that I missed the other day when things closed.

Oh, and got a couple of cheap summer dresses from the Designer Incubator. I figure I'll probably need them over in the states with their heat-wave or whatever.

And then I got a haircut. Which I probably didn't desperately need just yet, but I think I want my hair to look nice when I'm travelling

And now I am tired. How can just wandering around the city buying things be so tiring?

Here, have some Doctor Who wank as a refreshing treat.

Incidentally, does anyone remember an article a while back - not on LJ, but linked to me from LJ (maybe Firefox News?) - that was all about how two people can watch the same show but be seeing, basically, two entirely different shows? Something like that, anyway. It's not for anything serious, I just kind of want to reread it, and maybe keep the link handy.

...I'm not sure how I fit into the metaphor as a reader of fanfic.

As I know some of you have already seen: Diana Gabaldon on why fanfiction is a terrible horrible evil thing and like selling your children into slavery!

I find this particularly entertaining, since the only thing I know about Diana Gabaldon is that she based one of her characters on Jamie from Doctor Who.

Of all the links floating round on Fandom Wank this here is one of the better rebuttals.

And now I shall leave the intelligent arguments to people who are I am sure far more eloquent than me. I'll just stick with pointing and laughing at the stupid and reading fanfic.

2010-04-23 11:31 pm

And today I provide miscellaneous randomness.

You know what's a vaguely creepy experience? Being the only person on a tram. (Well, the only person other than the driver). 'Twas a bit weird this afternoon. Fortunately it didn't last all that long.

Something else which is also kind of creepy: random text messages about funerals. RIP Frank, whoever you may have been. (Yeah, I think that one was a wrong number).

In less creepy news, I am trying to decide if I should buy this jacket or not. It is interestingly weird, as all my favourite clothes are, and the one I tried on fits.

Oh, and news about a new animated Code Geass project finally leaked with that DVD. New lead, new location, set circa the first season? I can live with that. Though I kinda want someone to upload the new picture drama already

And that is your brief update from me. Unless you feel like joining the masses and talking about the Icelandic volcano (or Carl Williams if you are in Melbourne). Or the current and quite hilarious Bleach wank.

I'm not sure why Bleach wank amuses me so, given I haven't even seen/read the canon, let alone been in the fandom. Or maybe that's exactly why I find it so hilarious.
drakyndra: The Music Meister demands you sing! (Geass: Adorkable Suzaku)
2010-03-23 08:57 pm

This is the sort of random stuff that fills my mind. Now you know what it's like to be me!

So, it's been a week since I last posted here. Whoops.

In compensation, my dear flist, you get... a whole lot of randomness. Because a little randomosity is good for the soul.

- Over at Fandom_Wank, the Snapefen are at it again.
They've also been all over the_hms_stfu lately. Making a bid to take over the role of resident crazypants section of HP fandom from the Harmonians, perhaps?
- On a more positive HP note, awesomesauce insightful fanfic on the female characters in Harry Potter.

Back to RL, and SSRM tutes are continuing in the gloriously cracktastic tradition.

Last week we somehow ended up on the topic of writing haikus about "being one with the train". And this week were talking about/practicing interview techniques. And somehow we ended up re-enacting a focus group for cult escapees. With a running theme of goats, a mention of Focus Group Survivor, and these lovely quotes:

- "What hair styling products did you use as a cult leader?"
- "Why do we always talk about bestiality in this subject?"

Ah, bless you cracktastic tutes.

And an non-tute related amusing quote, from a little while back:

Allen: "You know what's hilarious? So, I was translating Lady Gaga into Latin..."

...The Sister's graduation is this weekend. This is weird to think about.

There are some very strange ideas for stories around, and some are inside my head

So, what is going on with me now that technology is once more my miniondoing what I want it to do?

...Not much, apparently.

Have read a couple of books:

- The marvelously titled Time Machines Repaired While-U-Wait, which starts off really good, takes a trip into the epically bizarre about half-way through (And this is a book where time-machines are apparently as common as iPods, so it's especially bizarre), and ends with a whimper rather than a bang, to my slight disappointment.

- And am currently reading the new Diana Wynne Jones book Enchanted Glass, which I had no idea about until I saw it on a shelf at Minotaur today.

I've also started reading the D.Gray-Man manga since The New Housemate has, like, 13 volumes worth of it. And he borrows my DVDs, so it's only fair. It's alright so far, though it hasn't exactly broken my personal top ten.

And that's about it as far as interesting goes for me. Unless you count my dreams, which seem to have taken a trip into bizarredom once more. I mean, the other night I dreamed that Mum had me committed to a mental institution, which was deeply, deeply disturbing and I'm not sure what part of my subconscious that came from. NOTE TO MY MOTHER: DON'T COMMIT ME TO A MENTAL INSTITUTION, 'KAY?

Of course, in the latter parts of that dream I ended up with some kind of mysterious magical powers somehow, and then proceeded to troll the fuck out of everyone in the institution. As one does.

On a more cheerful note, the Snapefen are on Fandom_Wank again. As people in the comments note, there's something incredibly comforting about Harry Potter wank. It's like one of the constants of the world, a fact you can rely on. The sun will rise, the night will end, and somewhere in Harry Potter fandom, someone will be throwing a tantrum over something.

And a gratuitous PLOCK for [livejournal.com profile] laurenmitchell

Hey, [livejournal.com profile] fa11ing_away, you seem to have left some clothes here in the bathroom. Just what should I actually do with them, since I really have no idea.

On a similar note, I need your new address so I can forward mail to you. Via PM or email or whatever is fine, I just can't recall all your new details right now, and I assume you'll want your mail.

In other news, today I went to [livejournal.com profile] lena_supercat's birthday barbecue, which was fun and meant I could catch up with lots of people whom I haven't seen in a while. And, you know, having generally geeky conversations as we hung out by the Yarra. Which was a fun way to spend an afternoon. Apart from the sunburn. Ouch.

In fannish news, I read the newest Jasper Fforde book, Shades of Grey, and rather liked it despite it being rather darker and less comedic than his other books. Pun not intended. Anyone else read it or know of somewhere I could chat on it?

Oh, and over in wankdom, Victoria Bitter has decided to leave fandom! FOR REALZ!!one! Does it count as pseudocide if you say you still have 6 weeks to live?

And in serious news: So, I hear it really sucks to be in Haiti about now. I must go through the stuff at [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti and see if any fan-artists/icon makers/fic writers I like are offering their services.

Oh Internets, what would I do for entertainment without you? (Yes, I know the answer is "books")

So, semester results are out! Well, sort of - my Radical Fiction marks apparently don't get released until Monday because of that staff strike thing. Eh, whatever.

(Yes, they came out yesterday. I was going to post about it last night, but after I had to wait a freaking half hour for a tram from the CBD on a Friday night, I sort of gave up in the face of being grumpy and late).

But anyway, I did decently enough on the stuff I did get marks for. H2B for Dangerous Earth - which is rather good, given how much effort I actually put into that subject (Hint: Not very much), and for my internship, a H2A. I was rather pleased about that.

And back on to fandom, which I am sure is much more interesting.

- Over at Fandom_Wank, we have infamous wanker Victoria Bitter + Harry Potter fandom = epic shenanigans. Particularly given what fic it turns out VB was responsible for, and the highly amusing "true stories" they have been telling.

- So, the new Geass thing seems to be a prequel manga? Yeah, I'm down with that, though I may need time to adjust to the different art style.

- ...I'm amused that there is already fanart of said manga. (Personally, I like this one, even if it does give me the urge to say "Cheer up, Emo Renya, your life can't possibly suck as much as poor Suzaku's did!)

- FMA fandom is doing a truly glorious job of flipping out - not that I blame them in the slightest, since I was also one of the flippees. Hands up who else thinks we may reach the end of FMA manga in 2010?

- I really need to get around to reorganising my bookshelves so I have enough room for my new manga stuffs. And new books. Space is kinda low currently...

Okay, so I'm all bouncy happy right now

Well, thus far this weekend my social life has been rather impressively social, given that this is me we are talking about.

On Friday there was a surprisingly large amount of people around for a Dumpling Adventure, followed by slightly less people on an Alcohol Adventure. And then today was [livejournal.com profile] altheas and [livejournal.com profile] lena_supercat's engagement party.

Though naturally I ended up late for the damn party because my alarm didn't go off this morning. I swear I wasn't that drunk when I set it. Anyway, much randomness and fun and catching up with peoples I hadn't seen in a while was had.

Anyway, back to my current traditional fandom postsTM.

Watchmen fandom has yet another wank going on, this one I am completely bewildered by, not being part of the Dan/Rorschach circles it seems to deal in. I wonder if this is, like, karmic payback from Alan Moore or something.

And given we are very much closing in on the new FMA series (which is apparently being subtitles Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, if what I have heard is correct), much shiny new stuff is popping up for that.

First is the news that an Asian TV channel is going to be airing New FMA with English subtitles less than a week after the Japanese screening. Which is just plain nifty. And is making me ponder if I should wait and grab the official subs, or look out for less reliable fansubs.

Secondly - and probably more notable - Shiny new (and long) new trailer of FMA:B! It's far from perfect footage, and doesn't show nearly as much of some characters as I want, but there's so much about it that makes me flail widely. Characters and scenes from the manga! Father! The Truth! Ed's State Alchemy Exam! Epic Armstrong! Lulzy moments! I has so much new FMA squee right now!

...And in other fannish squee, I have just heard the newest episode of Glorious Crack that is Batman: Brave and the Bold features Sherlock Holmes as a guest star. Must investigate further...

So, basically me class was sort of about explaining how a magic trick worked

I swear, one of the Psych lecturers was like drunk today. Or something, I'm not entirely sure what, because he seemed to have no idea what the hell he was on about (Not the one who was lecturing, the one who was hanging about).

It was bizarre, but kinda hilarious. Comedy duo lecturers.

Anyway, in Psych we are currently looking at Attention, which is something I've pretty much already done, and so it isn't all that interesting.

It did, however, mean we got to watch this rather nifty video:

When you see it, you'll shit bricks.

Also, Watchmen seems to have hit the wank button. Hard.
drakyndra: The Music Meister demands you sing! (Watchmen: Ozymandias is watching)
2009-03-08 10:33 pm

I'd talk about my cousin's wedding, but none of you know anyone involved

As people may have noticed, I now possess Watchmen icons. So huzzah for that.

And while I'm still on my Watchmen mentioning kick, despite whatever criticisms I may have had for the movie, there is no denying that the opening titles were a thing of brilliance. And now they are available online, so you don't have to resort to crappy handheld camera versions if you want to see them again.

Incidentally, there is already Watchmen movie wank. Bless you, mockable idiots.

Also, something that only really struck me during my icon hunt was the mildly strangeness of how going to Egypt has affected the way I watch/read the Ozymandias parts of Watchmen.

Mainly because I keep having stupidly random thoughts, like wondering if Gibbons based the chair in my icon on the one in the Egyptian museum. Or wondering how close movie!Karnak is to my photos of the actual one.

Or how exceptionally fitting the name "Ozymandias" is for Veidt, because aside from the subtext of the poem there's also the fact that the real Ozymandias, aka Rameses II, was apparently the publicity whore of the pharaohs, judging by the amount of monuments and statues I saw of him. (Which is why I am mildly confused by the poem, but I digress)

Any, onto other fannish stuff: since the new FMA anime is less than one month away now (!), there seems to have been quite a bit of news on it in the past few days. We've got a new cast (for the first few episodes, anyway), which has some major changes, so that's certain to cause wank. Plus there's the inexplicable new character no-one knows anything about.

There's a new trailer, with a new ending theme. Actually, there's been several new trailers, but this one only came out today.

Oh, and we seem to have confirmation that it's at least manga based, due to certain scans, even if it's not a 100% direct adaptation.

So yay for that.

Well, that was fast

And look what's already made Fandom Wank.

Anyhow, after stating my initial reaction, reading some intelligent comments both pro and con, and LOLing at the ridiculous flailing, it has dawned on me that given the thing that we really need to get definite opinions on Eleven - actual footage - isn't going to show any time soon, this is how fandom is going to be for the next year and half.

To which I have the highly intellectual reaction of fuck that shit, and am henceforth declaring a moratorium on all discussion of Mr Eleven in this LJ. Except for when I feel like talking about it.

And thus I shall return to watching Trigun. Vash is so adorable.

Things I never saw coming

Would you look at that? It appears that RDR is dropping their appeal.

Or in layman's terms, the Lexicon Wank is over. Wonders never cease.

In other news, I just got 50 new icon spaces, which is awesome. Now I just need to find some icons to fill them with.

Okay, okay I've already started. But I am totally on the look-out for shiny new icons, so feel free to link links. At this moment in time, I am most after some OT Star Wars icon (Don't ask...).

Or an icon about hats. Because, well, me.

But icons of general awesomeness are also appreciated.

Four Yays and a NOOOO!

You know, I really am quite enjoying not having any more assignments to do this semester. (Yes, I still have an exam in a week. That's okay, I can deal with exams)

Amongst other things, it allowed me to both get sleep and see what assorted fandoms are up to.

As a result, I can give you the following:

Things about today (and the rest of the week) which are awesome

- You know that HP Lexicon wank that never ends? Guess what will (apparently) be having an appeal.

Apparently someone didn't want Twilight fandom to steal their epic wanking crown.

- Speaking of which, though I have absolutely no desire to ever spend any money whatsoever on anything at all related to the sparkly vampires, I cannot deny that Robert Pattinson and his complete willingness to say exactly what he thinks of said books and their author continue to make me LOL. And wonder how he gets away with it.

- A new chapter of FMA just came out! Which, even in my list of awesome things, wins a prize for being especially awesome. Even though you can tell it's getting awfully close to the end stages of the manga, the plot is kicking on, and I have so much love for the characters right now. All of them.

But especially Cut for chapter 89 spoilers )

- Something of a coming soon bit of awesome, that new Batman: Brave and the Bold cartoon. Which isn't quite the same sort of Batman as TDK, but I mean, look at that trailer! Doesn't that look like fun.

Also, it has Jaime Reyes (Blue Beetle) as a recurring character, and he automatically makes things more awesome. See what I mean?

However, that brings me to another topic.

Things about today which really suck

- Blue Beetle is getting cancelled.

My response? An epic NOOOOOO! Seriously, I have no other words. I can't decide if I should be full of emo or full of rage right now.

*goes to look for Blue Beetle icons*

ETA: And this is now a GIP on top of everything else. YOU CAN TAKE MY COMIC BOOK, BUT YOU CAN NEVER TAKE MY ICONS!
