Not only are over-sensitive fire-alarms annoying, but highly dangerous. You tune them out as they ussually just mean "toast is being cooked". I slept through one going off right outside my room once. Not only that, but test's should that in some real house fires, the kind where there is initially less smoke and more flame, they sometimes simply don't work at all.
There is another kind that works much better, and doesn't go off when your neighbour goes outside for a cigarette. I don't know what they are called, but I know that A) They don't have a radiation hazard symbol on the back and B) They cost more, and are therefore less common.
