I wore hoop earrings to work the other day, but I felt really conspicuous and took them out. DAMMIT POP CULTURE FOR STEALING MY EARRINGS!
When I was in high school, true chavvery was when you had three sets of huge chunky gold hoops that were a bit horseshoe-shaped.
*eyedart* I actually couldn't tell, until she started going on about mortgages, and that was the script, not Billie. EXPLAIN.
I've never been quite able to put my finger on it. And mostly fandom is too middle-class to help me. Having discussed it in Real Life and a few times in the interwebs, a conclusion was reached that her confidence is not the bravado of the chav or the righteous rebellion of the educated poor, but rather the "I own this place!" of the habitually wealthy and pandered-to. There is something in the stance and movement of Rose. Something slightly off. It's why she's always felt like she was talking down to people when she bonded with the hired help. She's very, very convinced that she's "better than this," not just when she speechifies it, but in her very aura. She starts out that way, and it's not even that we can say she picked it up at university since Rose has no A-levels.
Looks like a chav, talks like a chav, acts like a Yah with a pashmina and appointments for "lunch, darling".
