Well, what do you know. For the very first time, one of the slightly dodgy DVD box sets I obtained from the Neighborhood Anime Store of Dubious Legality^TM has actually turned out to be, well, slightly dodgy. In a way that doesn't involve hilarious misspellings on the box.

Namely: My Death Note box set was completely missing one of the episodes. Fortunately, the missing episode was episode 20, so it's not like anything really vital was missing - in fact, in wasn't until another half-a-dozen episodes in I even realised I'd missed something. (And for completisms sake, I made sure to watch the episode online once I realised I'd skipped it)

It's actually kind of a first - I know the DVDs from that store are kind of dodgy, but it's never been quality dodgy. It's more the don't-ask-why-they-are-so-cheap-and-look-nothing-like-official-boxsets dodgy.

I'm not entirely sure what I can do about it, either. I could go back and complain, but unless all the other identical Death Note sets somehow have an episode this one was missing, it's not going to change much. And even if the store owner likes me enough to give me a discount on the stuff he sells me, I'm not getting a refund for a receit-less cash sale that I've already watched.

Maybe I'll just tell him so he can complain to his supplier. Or whatever. And then try to get the official individual DVD with that episode on it on sale somewhere.

Well the only way you could know it was missing episodes is to watch it. Ask for a refund (or store credit) - trust me, it won't put them very much out of pocket and your repeated patronage is more important over all.

A friend at work gave us a clearly dodgy copy of Samurai Champloo, we had to change the audio settings on each episode to get it in sync - was quite funny. Then I bought the legit copy after having watched the dodgy one through twice ;)

To be honest, I still kinda want to keep the DVD, missing episode and all (Partially because the official box set isn't out in Australia yet - the last DVD was only out last month).

I'll definitely drop in to the place some time during the week, though.

I'm just surprised, because this is the first time one of the dodgy DVDs has been actually dodgy, as opposed to just missing special features and having crappy boxes. I've gotten like half my anime from this guy, and there's never been a problem before.

I don't think there even is a legit Death Note box set out in Australia yet - and buying all the individual DVDs is ridiculously expensive in comparison.

Yeah I don't think there, is you're right. Madman are a little slack on getting the sets out, though they only just did the manga set. I'm waiting on an xxxHOLiC set to come out as I'd love a box set of that and am already paying DVD by DVD for Code Geass (which reminds me two came out recently...)

I actually have the entire first season of Code Geass now. Admittedly, from dodgy anime store, but since Death Note was the first problem I'd had, it should be okay...

When I watched Chrono Crusade, I borrowed it from my brother's girlfriend...and she had one of those dodgy boxsets of it. So I took it home and watched it, and then got to the cute episode where Chrono has a cold, and...

Halfway through the thing skipped to the credits. I reversed and got back to the same part and...again, skipped to the credits. Somehow the episode had gotten cut in half. But then I was like "oh well, it was just a filler episode anyway".

A few weeks later one of my friends mentions the "kiss they had in the anime" and I was like "WHAT KISS? WHEN WAS THERE A KISS?"

Oh, the tragedy that is dodgy box sets missing bits.

Fortunately, the stuff I missed was all from the manga (which I've read multiple times), so I knew what happened. Which may be why I didn't notice the skip.

Yeah, I think for the most part the anime follows the manga fairly closely, from what I remember. So it makes sense why you'd be able to follow it fine.

The first half is a fairly close adaptation (Aside from the infamous addition of the religious symbolism/yaoi subtext scene). The second cuts a lot of stuff, but keeps the main plot points for the most part.
