It's the sequel to The Amulet of Samarkand, by Jonathan Stroud.
It's set in an alternate London where magicians exist, and are very powerful figures in society. But what the commoners aren't told is that the magicians rely on magical creatures which they summon.
The first book is told from two perspectives - Nathaniel, a young apprentice, and Bartimaeus, a 5000 year old djinni. They're alright books, but I'll admit I'd completely forgotten about them until I saw the sequel in stores.
