The TWoP recap of PotW.

Jacob threatens to do a recap of The Christmas Invasion if Sci-Fi channel doesn't get a move on with Series 2. O_O

Aww, I've always quite liked Jacob's recaps. They certainly provide something you can't get anywhere else - and I certainly prefer 'em over some of the TWoP recaps that tip over the line from snark into spitefulness. I just can't take it seriously when some of the reviewers seem to be about to flip out and start screaming "HATE! HATE! HATE!" at any moment... You just know that some of the TWoP crew would have lengthy diatribes in which they desribe most of the cast as ugly and talentless, and insinuate that RTD must have serious mental problems. And we've already got Outpost Gallifrey for that.
But seriously... I've never fully got the TWoP love, and have always found the reputed snark - which can be a joy when it's actually working - to be pretty rare. Jacob has a few, in amongst the... eccentricities.

But that's the thing - I like Jacob's snark, the first couple of recaps were quite amusing, snarky without being mean. But as he's gone on, the recaps have had less and less snark, and more and more terribly pretentious pseudo-literary stuff. And I can't stand that sort of thing, we were forever mocking it in my Creative Writing classes.

So it's even more annoying, because scattered amid the rubbish, you get these really amusing comments, which makes it all so irritating.

I think to a great extent, it may be because Jacob reads the forums and cares deeply about what's said on them... there was the whole business with "The End of the World" where the recaplet was all: "Didn't like it." and the forums were like: "NO WAI!" and then the recap was: "I've watched it again, and I really do love it actually!". And of course, they keep validating Jacob's eccentricities, and saying how brilliant it is, and how wonderful, and it keeps building and building.

*sighs* It's just... irritating. I've given up on the forums there completely, except for the point and laugh factor, mainly because the whole lot of them come off as Doctor/Rose shippers, only with a lit degree and aged up a couple of decades. So hearing them come up with batshit theories that I have seen confirmed as wrong amuses me deeply.

While Jacob does lapse into "blah blah literary blah blah" and I have to skim, it's better than Sara M.'s House recaps. She just full-on dislikes it by now, and she's always going on about how House is racist or why don't more of him patients attack him or "and then they went off and had sex and came back". At least Jacob points out things I missed.

I don't read anything else on TwoP - in fact, the only reason I started reading this was that Jacob did a recap of Serenity I liked, and over on the OG people made it out like this was a Big Deal.

I think it's also a case of the fact it seems to encourage the (already quite crazy) forums to aspire to that sort of pretentiousness as well, so we get not only crazies, but pretentious crazies, which whilst entertaining, get terribly tedious.

Ugh, pretentious crazies. The worst kind. I never read the forums, because I can't stand all of the blacked-out spoilers. I read them anyway, and it's such a pain to highlight them.

They are not fun.

In other news, I had an experience rather like that of a f_w n00b hearing about Caina for the first time - Doctor/Rose batshit shipper, who's been entertainly crazy for weeks now. Just discovered than rather than being the young teen girl with her first OTP, she's a woman in her 30s. *headdesk*

Interestingly enough, she's also on the TWoP Doctor Who forums.

Shockingly, I don't think that word showed up. Lots of babbling about Gods and Goddesses and Rose-love, mind (I almost want to see what he'd say about Series 2, just because he did predict the finale very close to accurately, and it might be interesting to see how close he'd be)

I heard Jacob watched the whole thing before he recapped it so he could guess and look clever...

I know the first bit of Doctor Who he was The Christmas Invasion, and I think he had a version with the CiN special spliced in front...

Pretentious, yah, sure. Entertaining? I find his recaps very much so. For Serenity as well as for Dr. Who.

[although part of it, yeah, is the fact that I *like* lit. analysis, and even if this isn't exactly that, about half the stuff he says is stuff I'd been tossing around in my brain while watching the episode anyway, so....]

I'm sure Sci-Fi are quaking in their boots.

Pretentious like hell, but I do actually find this an interesting take, and the recaps are humorous to boot. So I guess I don't actually mind.

Thanks for the heads-up, though.
