People like it because it's hot /and/ Sci-Fi. It's the way we do things now.
Very true. Sci-fi makes the impossible possible, and thus is more interesting to fantasise over.
And I think this person would annoy me less if a) she didn't pull the "All Ten fans are squeeing fangirls" card, and b) I hadn't seen her repeatedly diss Tennant in favour of her own Doctor. Yeah, Six isn't hugely popular. That doesn't give you the right to bash another Doctor.
I do my share of squeeing over Ten, but I like to hope I'm still sensible about these things. And I'm certainly still a science fiction fan who's had a thing for time travel stories since childhood.* It is possible to do both.
--- *What got me into it: Back to the Future, at about age seven. I thought at that age that Doctor Who was strange and cheesy....all apologies, but there you have it. But at least I was still a fan of a guy named Doc who had a time machine. ;)
I was all books as a kid - I didn't watch a lot of TV - and I had a preference for fantasy and horror. But sci-fi sort of spun out of that, and I ended up in my current state, which is I prefer to watch sci-fi, but read fantasy.
Yeah... I've been saturated in fantasy literature ever since reading the Wizard of Oz books at age five, because shortly after that, it was Lloyd Alexander's books, Robin McKinley, Susan Cooper, Jane Yolen, Tamora Pierce, C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, etc., etc., etc. I started there as a wee thing and kept on going. ;) I tend to watch my SF rather than read it, too, but as far as fantasy goes... well, you should see my bookshelves.
Word. I'm about the same age as that poster, been watching Who for probably just as long. I *know* I've seen all the episodes (except the destroyed ones). Yet miraculously, I like all the new Who, and don't mind the sexiness or shippiness of it. I have some small issues with this bit or that bit, but on the whole I like it just fine the way it is.

(I'll admit to being sick of the constant love of Tennant, but that's more of a pet peeve. Having no eye candy would be an awful shame.)
