Random vaguely meta-ish Doctor Who thought

Just an odd connection that came out of nowhere, and decided to share.

You know all that talk from Rusty about how, as Rose "humanised" the Doctor, he "Time Lorded" Rose? Does it strike anyone else as interesting that this shows up in the same series that we get explicit mentions of the Time Lords in a negative manner?

"So frightened of change", indeed.

Ooh, that is interesting. Especially since the show also spent so much time going on about how humans need to change and grow.

I don't know how that sprung to my attention, I just thought it was interesting.

On the Time Lord thing: Finch outright says to the Doctor "You seem to be something new." The positive traits of the Doctor aren't the Time Lord things, they are the ways he isn't like a Time Lord. The humanised parts, as it were.

(The stagnation versus change thing is one of those themes I tend to jump all over in fandoms. Everyone has their personal obsessions, and change is one of mine)

When people were demanding that she never leave, I kept pointing to the many ways in which the series is not actually that positive about the Doctor's lifestyle. She'd be lonely, she'd lack grounding, etc.

In Rusty!World Time Lords aren't really that awesome.

Exactly. It's been out and out said that the Doctor causes trouble to those around him, about how it was happening to Rose and yet people would still go on about how wonderful they would be together? Then again, as my cracked out random showed, some people genuinely expected the Doctor to settle down, WTF?

Were they ever that awesome? They had corruption, getting the Doctor to do their dirty work, so on and so forth...

Essentially the reason it's "okay" for the Doctor to leave home but dodgy for Rose, is that we're never given any reason to think that he'd be missed or that there's anything worthwhile on Gallifrey. We don't, for instance, ever meet his mother who is of course human anyway.

Whereas Rose is moving away from humanity, and humanity is always A Good Thing in RustyWorld. Actually she is yet another example of how the Doctor can't keep people because he changes them. Most of them change in a way that makes them leave, but she picked up on the neediness and wouldn't.

...And if we looks at the old series, we can see that considering some of what went on on Gallifrey, he really might have been better off leaving. And he left as a fully grown adult, and brought his family (or some of it, anyway) with him, unlike Rose, who emotionally was still a child.

Exactly. The thing about Rose being "Time Lorded" is that it comes at a cost of humanity. She's becoming something she doesn't fully understand, and that's dangerous. Particularly when it isn't the most positive things she is picking up on...

The Doctor is pretty much the ultimate instrument in change. Whether it's on the grand scale - toppling empires, destroying worlds - or the small - inspiring someone to do some good in their life.
