I was initially going to post a review/discussion/whatever of Gridlock now, seeing that assignment-ness is done and all. However, on account of the fact that it's only a short time until the episode, and the wank and some viciousness I've seen going around in response to the episode, I've decided not to for now. Instead I'm going to stand by the things I've discussed in assorted journals and comms, and also state there was much squee and happiness from that episode.

That said, maybe after the series finishes I might go back and do a retrospective one. And probably some of my thoughts from it will carry over into my review of the next episode, anyway. I'll just hang around [livejournal.com profile] lifeonmartha reading the fics there.

Instead, I propose the current topic of discussion:

Chrestomanci is a Time Lord: Y/Y/MFY?

Chrestomanci is a Time Lord: Y/Y/MFY?

Heh. I've been thinking the same thing since I've re-read the Chrestomanci Chronicles!

Imagine if Chrestomanci and the Doctor ever met...

Chrestomanci goes on my flist of characters from other canons that are secretly Time Lords. Like James Bond.

Imagine if Chrestomanci and the Doctor ever met...

That would be completely and utterly MADE OF AWESOME! And then someone could write me Doctor/Chrestomanci slash

I met Chrestomanci way before I really got acquainted with the Doctor but when I was re-reading the books it struck me who alike Chrestomanci and the Doctor was.

And then someone could write me Doctor/Chrestomanci slash

Just the thought's enough to make me keel over!

I'm trying to remember when I first became familiar with both, and I think Chrestomanci would have been first. I certainly bought the books before I started buying Who stuff, even if I never got involved in the fandom and my Chrestomanci interest only carries over when a new book's out.

Just the thought's enough to make me keel over!

Oh, indeed.

When I re-read the Chrestomanci novels recently I couldn't help but think if DWJ was a little bit inspired by Doctor Who. Also, she's the only author I know who can write unpleasant characters and can make me root for them by the end of the book.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Her first books were out in the 70s, so it's entirely possible. And Diana Wynne Jones' books are one of the reasons I will unashamedly admit to loving children's books (though her adult books can be quite fab, too. Great imagination)

From: [identity profile] grimorie.livejournal.com

Wait, she wrote for adults too?

I wished I discovered DWJ when I was younger, my reading fare back then was woefully thin. But oh, Chrestomanci with your vanity and vague looks and... and everything!

Does Millie ever get her own story BTW? I just love character so much.

She's written a few for adults - still mostly fantasy, though. There's a complete list of her books here.

Well, the most we ever hear of Millie is in The Many Lives..., and that's all backstory. She doesn't really get her own story much, just supporting roles, as it were.

In the dying days of the Time War, as things seemed at their most desperate, the Celestial Intervention Agency authorised a strange project to insure that, even if they were indeed destroyed, something of their species would survive. Time Lord biodata was scattered throughout the multiverse, creating many skilled and powerful beings with many lives.

THIS IS TRUE.

Erm...hi.

I found you while lurking on lifeonmartha (your shiny icons attracted me), noticed that we're in one of the same subjects at uni (*headdesks over media effects essay*) and would like to ask if you've read DWJ's Tough Guide to Fantasyland.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Same class? Small world, innit?

Yeah, I have read the Tough Guide, but it was a few years back now. And it was bloody hard to find a copy, too

From: [identity profile] ebontane.livejournal.com

Tiny world.

And I totally had to beg a friend to lend me her copy of the book.

Mind if I friend you? I can do with more friends into Doctor Who.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Tell me about it - first week of Uni, I made friends with someone who turned out to be the author of a fic I had randomly read on ff.net years ago. That was weird.

Sure, friend away. I mostly yammer about Who and Uni, occasionally dropping in and out of other fandoms. I may or may not friend back immediately.
