drakyndra: The Music Meister demands you sing! (Martha is more Awesome)
([personal profile] drakyndra Jul. 1st, 2007 11:15 am)
You know, given the complete and unrepentant fury I've seen from my flist for Last of the Time Lords, I actually enjoyed it rather more than I was expecting to. I mean there was only one bit where I was facepalming at the stupidity, and one where I was facepalming at the rip-off"homage". Oh, and my one NOOOOOOO YOU CAN'T DO THAT TO ME! moment.

It seemed to work better in action than it sounds in description - that said, that's about par for course for a lot of Doctor Who.

And it was better than Doomsday

Is it just my optimistic tendancies? Or was the anger leading me to expect something rather worse than I saw?

Onto more spoilery type stuff...

To clarify my opening statements:
Facepalm at stupidity = not the "We believe in the Doctor" stuff, but the floaty glowy Doctor consequences.
Rip-off = Pyre scene. Though I liked in in RotJ, and they get away with it here by heavy hints this isn't the last of the Master.
NOOOOOO = Obviously, Martha going. Not so much the manner she left (though I'd like to have heard the Doctor say something about how fab she was first) because it's almost exactly how I would have wanted her to leave in another series or so's time, but the fact fandom will have to live with gloaty batshipper types. Also, really weird after earlier in the episode the Doctor and Martha were all clingy and shippy looking.

That said: I can live with it, so long as S4 has frequent occurances of the Doctor jumping like Martha's bitch every time that phone rings. Because it's true, dammit!

Since it's pretty much confirmed from commentaries and all she'll be back for some, is Martha the new Tegan?

I will admit that though I do really like Jack, the revelation that he is the Face of Boe had me dying of laughter. Less because of the revelation, more because of the wank I have already seen coming from it. Oh fandom, you crack my shit up.

I has meta type thoughts, which will be posted at some later time, on why Martha is like Mickey (and not just because I love them both) Re: getting treated badly by the Doctor in favour of Mary SueRose, but treated by the show in a way that gives them rather more agency and respect than said individual.

...I've got a character type, haven't I? The underdog thing. Martha and Mickey are the new Ron. Canonically quite talented, but also canonically overlooked in favour of others. And the depressing thing is, I know exactly why I do this, in terms of my own personality.

Dammit, I hate it when fiction makes me introspective.

Random stuff I liked:
- They flipped the cliche of "collect these pieces to build a weapon of awesome" to the point of Martha laughing at the unrealisticness of it.
- So called the Lucy betrayal.
- The Doctor/Master slash? Dying in his arms? The Doctor thinking of settling down with the Master?
- Though I want more Simm!Master, I loved the fact his death was entirely out of spite to the Doctor.
- In the year that didn't happen, Martha became this grand mythical figure. Neato.

There will be more later. I'm still working out what to think.

I somehow managed to miss the uproar, which may explain why I felt underwhelmed by the episode. It had its moments of brillance, to be sure (David Tennant should not be allowed to cry onscreen, ever, because it breaks my heart) but I spent most of it going "... What?"

I quite liked most of it but yes, there were a number of WUT moments. And they took my Martha away

No fury from this corner, at all. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't get the emotional payoff I wanted with Martha (and no, I don't mean them 2GETHA 4EVA, at all!), and I thought some of the plot was a bit shit, but the Master and the Doctor's last scene togther really made up for everything else, almost. :D

Agreed with the absence of emotional payoff.

As I said, I liked most of it, but I think I could have forgiven the stupid/annoying stuff if we had some emotional payoff with Martha.

It's not the badness per se that burns so much as the weariness I felt at the thought of actually picking through the wreckage in my head trying to explain why I didn't like it and I just thought sod it, I don't have to do that just because I have a bloody LJ and I'm allowed to have feelings about this as well as thoughts and really I do not want to Discuss because it all gets so bloody. And so I am going to go away and mope and not Analyse because that is an option and it scares me that I almost didn't think I had the right to do that.

So yes. Fandom confuses my brain. And I keep being accidentally inflammatory if I ever go near it. The fact that nos is possibly nicer about t'telly than I am yet her views plus Prominence means she is considered Pure Evil by the crazy some is not an encouragement to further participation, it must be said. Not that I am glamorous enough to attract that level of loathing, but it really isn't a pleasant prospect even at some sort of 0.5% dilution.

So yes. I usually don't attempt Lengthy Analysis because I fear the consequences and fluffy random is safer. This time I feel Nothing At All is the way forward. Um, except that this comment is quite a contradiction of that. Oops.

Right-ho. I may make a real tin hat to remind me to stay away from the keyboard...

Thing is, for the most part I liked the episode - I'm an optimist, and I can mentally gloss over the bits I don't like for the most part. Which probably isn't the most intellectual response, but I prefer being happy than annoyed with my fandoms.

You can always discuss in a flocked or filtered post. Or something.

*is currently rageful at Martha haters implying Freema's been sacked for being a diva or bad acting*

I think Rose and Martha reacted in different ways to the same basic level of feeling. Rose was OK with Never Actually Says Anything But Basically Cares On Some Level. Martha wasn't. Maybe they want different things from relationships, maybe Martha is less willing to settle for "better than nothing", maybe she's less sure of the level of feeling that is there. And really, I can't go out into the world with opinions like that.

Ho hum. Rose makes sense to me in a loved-them-all pattern. I really get gloomy at being made to want to stab her quite as much as I do.

As far as I'm concerned, Doctor Who's best when it's about the subtle things, even when it's still got aliens and shit blowing up. The juxtaposition works if it's contained. There's just so much inherent silliness to the whole thing under the surface (which is why even as a kid, I thought the whole thing was cheesy and strange) that when you blow it up and force it to be Epic, everything's multiplied, and you get flashes of brilliance amongst metric tons of WTF?

The best part of it was a handful of people in a room. No hordes of alien marauders, no faux!Yodas turning into magic glowy pretty people thanks to the power of positive thinking, just betrayal and rage and refusal and loss... and that's epic. The rest is just so much fuss and bluster, and unfortunately, it's what too much of the episode was.

Which doesn't make Martha any less awesome or the funeral pyre any less of a Jedi ripoff. ...er, a personal emotional... thing. That sentence got away from me, yeah.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Agreed. Doctor Who is best when it's personal (or interesting ideas: see Blink). So long as it doesn't collapse into melodramatic beach emo scenes

I liked it. It was ludicrous and overblown, but it's a BBC sci-fi show aimed largely at kids. As long as I don't expect too much of it I generally like it.

Except for cross breed Daleks in pin-stripe suits. I can't lower my expectations that much.

From: [identity profile] khallandra.livejournal.com

Yay! Someone who liked it too!

I don't see why people are so fussy, it was very different than the previous two. See the last two season finale's were pretty much Rose-centric. But in this it was the Doctor's plight, rather than the world that was more important. Cause we know in our hearts that the Doctor can stop any invasion against any 'monster' but hell he was a bird in a cage and Martha had to save him. Save him so he can save the world.

Added an extra complexity I liked :)

I like it, but don't love it. Or rather, it's another sublime/ridiculous fight out, here, where the bits I love fight with the deeply facepalmable.

And I'm pissy at the sections of fandom who seem convinced to use this as an excuse for free-for-all Freema and Martha bashing.

From: [personal profile] fannishnonsense

I mostly liked it. Sure, there were bits that made me cringe, but it wasn't horrible or anything. And I agree about it being better than Doomsday. God, I hated that one.

I am very much avoiding certain segments of fandom though. I think if I went over to the OG I might end up a lot less positive than I currently am about the whole thing.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Agreed, like but not love. Which means I tend to enjoy watching it for the most part, but will listen to crit and spork the crap out of it afterwards. (Unlike GitF, which I will not hear a word against).

But that's probably a sane idea. I took one look at some of the names on the Daily, and I just can't bear it. Please let Monday's announcement be good Martha news, so we get an end to the horrible bitchy comments about Freema.

From: [identity profile] stickmarionette.livejournal.com

I'm with you on mostly liking it. Martha better not be leaving, but I'm otherwise more or less satisfied because I liked the emotional payoff we got with her in her last scene in this episode, and I adored the Doctor/Master emotional payoff.

God, fandom really is imploding over this.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I'm more annoyed at fandom than I am at the episode, if that makes sense. The number of horrid, vicious snide remarks about Freema... *needs it to be Monday time for that announcement NOW*

From: [identity profile] chocolatepot.livejournal.com

Okay, so I completely agree with every single thing you said, except that I didn't call Lucy's betrayal.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I predicted that either the Master or Lucy would betray the other - just because if you want to parallel the Doctor-Companion relationship, which is all about faith and trust, the easy parallel is one of mistrust.

RotJ? *titters* Yes! And the very first Toclafane reminded me of those feel-the-Force lightsaber-training zapping balls!

(Here via surfing -- hope you don't mind! :-))

I can't be upset about Star Wars bits, even if they are all "homages".
