Things that get you of to a good start after a break: Getting your first mid-semester assignment back, and finding out you got a H1 for it.

It's even more cheering when you are aware of how littlemuch work you put into it. Huzzah for the last minute!

In other news, have seen the most recent Sarah Jane Adventures episode. Liked it rather more than the opener, so have concluded that my problems with the first were mostly Slitheen (or actors playing the Slitheen) based, and am looking forward to the next episode.

Whilst on the topic of fandom, my FMA watching has drawn to a halt because, well, I've run out of episodes to watch, and Animasia still hasn't gotten the rest in yet. Bah humbug.

That said, *flail* at what I've seen so far. So very much love! What the adorable and fun-ness of it all, but with a really dark and nasty streak. And I love, like, all of the characters so far.

Though Ed has to be my favourite so far. No, this post totally wasn't just an excuse to use this icon. I have concluded that I consider him another of my platonic crushes, ala Luke Skywalker. (Namely, I madly love them both, but in a completely non-sexual or romantic way). Bless

And given I have seen up to episode 26 thus far, my most recent reaction...

OH MY GOD YOU KILLED HUGHES! YOU BASTARD!

...Ahem. Guess who really liked Hughes, and totally didn't see that coming.

*is waiting impatiently for the rest of the series to arrive*

I know. ;_;

He was both utterly adorable, and totally awesome when he got all I CUT U BIATCH!

From: [identity profile] van.livejournal.com

And he loved his little girl SO MUCH, aaaughhherfhnnn, HUGHES!!!1

Probably my favorite character on the show. Sigh. Though I did like the absurdity of Al, the cute younger brother, being some huge suit of armor, haha.

When she's at the funeral, asking why they are burying her Daddy asdF;lfals;khj;a

I'd say he was one of my favourites, except "one of my favourites" probably includes almost every recurring character.

And I think the interesting thing about Al being in the armour is more the fact that he was the sweet, naive, innocent one, rather than young. In this big threatening-looking armour.

From: [identity profile] van.livejournal.com

Yeah, that's it. Al's too young and sweet and innocent to be in this scary big armor, which is what makes it so appealing. And Ed is the short one and is really tough, etc.

Aah, the funeral. And the way that bit plays after the credits and aoeitjhfhierh. Yeah.

I can't say I loved all of the characters, but I don't recally HATING anyone, which is good.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Well, it's a lot more interesting that the expected way, anyhow. (Though if Ed had been sneakier, he could have pretended to be as harmless as his height implies, and thus have the advantage of being underestimated and all)

It's a completely blatant attempt at emotional manipulation, but damn it worked well.

True, true...

From: [identity profile] van.livejournal.com

Yeah. But then again, Ed is like, what, 14? 15? You can't really expect him to not get offended when people call him short hahahaha.

Yes, yes. It does work well, stupid emotions. Sigh. And you're like YES ROY IT WAS RAINING 'cause peaodrjhierh.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

True. It's just that, as shown with mining town and the gold, Ed can be pretty darn cunning when he puts his mind to it. I do reckon that once he gets a bit older, and less sensitive about appearance, Ed could get damn impressive at manipulating people.

Oh, Roy... ;_;

From: [identity profile] van.livejournal.com

Oh definitely. He is very smart and mature for his age, all things considered. But the shortness just seems to be a super point of contention for him or something. Sigh.

Poor Roy augh.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Everyone has their hotbutton issues. (I, for one, got endless entertainment from mocking my sister about being short. And I remain eternally greatful that karma didn't bite my arse and have her end up taller than me)

Poor dear.

AMAGAD. I saw your icon and squeeeeed, then squeeeeeeed even more when your post turned out to be about FMA, too. Is that icon stealable?

I finished watching all the episodes (and the movie that follows them) about 2 weeks ago, and was left feeling like I'd gone through a particularly good multiple orgasm. The series is amazing and totally sucked me in; I actually cried when it was all over and there was no more to watch.

I won't spoil anything for you but I just want to give you a HELL YEAH on Ed being a 'platonic crush' ... I'm more than a little pissed off that he's only an anime character and fancying him therefore feels somehow wrong, but I adore his character, his pluck, his willingness to stray into morally grey areas, and his passion and devotion to going on and helping his brother, no matter what. And as for the series - it's the juxtapositioning of Hughes boring people with baby pictures while switching in the very next scene to showing the twitching human remains of a failed alchemy experiment ... it's twisted in the most delicious way but still ultimately very uplifting, even it can be seriously dark.

That just made my day a little brighter! You must stick with it, it's so very very worth it.

Anybody got any other recommendations about anime to watch? I've seen all of Hellsing, which was darker than FMA, and I have Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away on DVD. Also have a lot of O! My Goddess hidden away somewhere, but beyond that I'm not sure what's good.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Yeah, yoink away, but credit whoever it was I list in my userinfo. i pinched it from someone on my flist, too...

I find the fact he's, well, a kid, is more off-putting than the animated thing. Or not so much, since I am completely incapable of thinking about Luke Skywalker and sex, either - maybe it's a more sibling-y sort of love. Whatever.

...And now I am sitting here wondering if there are any fics in which Luke and Ed meet. I think the two would get on quite well, actually.

I am very, very looking forward to the rest of the series (I actually have a DVD of the movie, but I am not watching until the rest of the series comes in. Which will hopefully be soon). And, yes, I am very much enjoying it all, lolarious bits and "I can't believe they just went there" bits alike.

Don't ask me about anime recs, this is the first anime I've ever gotten into. (See what I mean?) Once I finish FMA, I'll be going round asking for recs.

Is there anyone who didn't love Hughes to bits? *Especially in his last episode. He'll be sorely missed... (No, I didn't see it coming either)

Some magazine I flicked through at Borders the other day had him listed among their "Most annoying anime characters" list.

Humourless bastards.

Well, he does start out a little annoying in his first appearance. But oh, does he move beyond that...

I may have done actual tears over Hughes. But I'll never admit that to anyone!

oh.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I wasn't quite that far, but it was a close call. Especially at the funeral, since my response to the actual death was *jawdrop*

From: [identity profile] stickmarionette.livejournal.com

Ed is one of my favourite fictional characters ever. He's just so complex, so brilliant and unpredictable, and his devotion to Al is adorable.

I have to add myself to the chorus of people who teared up at Hughes' funeral. So sad. :(

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I really do have very much love for Ed.

Oh Hughes... ;_;
