Does anyone else think it would be neat if in say 10-15 years or so, Maria from the Sarah Jane Adventures were to become a companion?

Because, well, it'd mean a companion who is completely competent at alien fighting and world-saving to start with. Which could be interesting.

Also, instant character backstory (or prequels, for that matter).

Who said we needed to wait that long? We have a show about time travel.. wouldn't it be cool, say another actresses playing Maria some time in her future??

True, but I think the current actress is pretty decent.

Also, I am amusing myself with thoughts of so kid becoming a Maria fangirl, and wanting to find out more about her - and then discovering, to her amazement, there she used have a show as a kid.

I'd personally rather see Luke or Clyde get the companioning role (I find Maria a bit lackluster, honestly), but over all, yes. Hell, doesn't need 10-15 years, give her 3-5 and she'll be as good as Susan, Vicki, Nyssa, Dodo, Polly, etc. I mean most of the girl companions are 18-25ish and she's already what, 14? XD

And she'd have learnt all about him from Sarah Jane and won't take his nonsense.

Yes, although with Luke and Clyde. Ooh. There's a time bubble or something and they end up replacing Tegan, Nyssa and Adric! Fifth Doctor stories become suddenly cohrent and intentionally amusing! Hugs all round! Yes!

I just thing it'd be fun for the Doctor to pull his normal "run into a girl during alien trouble and gets her to help saving the world", at which point she proceeds to save the world entirely without his help, and he just stares.

It is quite scary how little age difference there is there, actually.

Exactly. It'd be highly amusing to see the Doctor's expression.

Luke is too similar to the Doctor to work as a companion, I think.

And your brain is more crack than mine, sweetie.

Luke is too similar to the Doctor to work as a companion, I think.

Nononono that's the beauty of it! Awkward 5th Doctor trying to connect with enthusiastic but emotionally-naive genius child, only not Adric so it don't suck! Underscoring the ineptly-parental role and yet imbuing it with sweetness! Also, and this was my main point, NOT ADRIC

I might be misreading things here, but I am getting a mild suspicion that you like this idea because of a slight... "not-Adric"-ness of it all.

You have to admit, she makes a compelling argument, there.
