You know, I'm currently trying terribly, terribly hard not to be one of those people who hate adaptations just because they are different. Really, I am.

But, well, then I saw the trailer for the US version of 'Life on Mars".

And well, you know how all those people on the Forum Formerly Known as The OG would go on about the show making them cringe... I finally know what they mean.

Because watching that trailer just fills me with a mild horror of the just plain wrong-ness of it all. It is pure, distilled DO NOT WANT.

And to continue on the theme of really bad things, this wank has currently causing me some deep philosophical pondering: Should I continue to remain blissfully ignorant of Twilight and it's sparkly vampires, or should I make like I did with Eragon and read the first book so I can mock with authority?

...Admittedly, Twilight seems to be less of the soul-hurty form of bad, and more along the lines of hilariously awful.

Ah, questions.

Read the book! It's utterly dreadful, but I quite love it. Very readable, enjoyable dreadfulness. (I found Eragon just plain old dreadful.)

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

See, I found Eragon enthralling bad. Possibly because I spent half the time I was reading it commenting on how bits were ripped off Star Wars to other people in the car.

I tried Twilight. It read like a cliche teen novel with Vampires thrown in for good measure.

"Next Harry Potter book"? No chance.

That's why I stayed away to start with - I'm not a big fan of romance or cliche teen stuff. But the sporkings I've read are hilarious enough to make me vaguely curious as to how bad it really is.

From: [identity profile] chocolatepot.livejournal.com

It's making me shudder in horror but I know I'm totally going to watch it anyway.

The vampires are so unique in, the special powers they have (e.g. Alice seeing the future, Edward reading minds), the fact that they glow in the sun, the fact that a few vampires are “vegetarian” and don’t eat people for moral reasons, its all very original and creative.

LOLOLOLOLOL Oh, sweetie.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I think I shall listen very carefully to what other people say before I watch it.

And that remark makes me wonder who exactly I should be laughing at: The author, or the commenter.

From: [identity profile] everlasting-day.livejournal.com

Oh lawd, that is depressingly terrible. Inbetween shuddering at the sheer amount of fail, I couldn't help but laugh at American!Sam Tyler's refusal to change his facial expression.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I know. It's just... someone somewhere made a comment about wondering if this was some sort of parody, and I understand totally what they mean. It just seems to have... sucked all the depth out of everything.

From: [identity profile] danel4d.livejournal.com

I'm not even a fan of the original - I've seen maybe one or two episodes - and my initial reaction to this was that it was a parody. I'm honestly not sure what anyone who decides to watch the show on the, ah, strength of this trailer, would actually be expecting out of it.

It's the voiceover. Nobody uses that kind of voiceover for anything *serious* anymore.

Not that this helps with the rest of the awfulness, mind. I thought that maybe Colm Meaney might make a semi-decent Gene Hunt, but that was before I noticed they'd cast a Sam that could beat Meaney up without breaking a sweat.

I also found a link on [livejournal.com profile] frelling_tralk's journal to a site that has the script to both the US and UK pilot of LoM. Read, compare, and weep. As far as I can see, it's a literal copy except for removing the elements that make the modern police force different from the 70's one...

This is what I'm wondering, so I can't help you there, sorry.

That trailer made my eyes bleed. What have they done, it is so terrible. If anyone asks me 'should I watch Life on Mars' my response will be 'only the UK version' and all that from a trailer.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Well, yeah.

I wonder if it'll go the way of the American Blackpool (ie. Get two episodes in, and then everyone will swear to never speak of it again)

From: [identity profile] altheas.livejournal.com

The only saving grace of this seems to be the inclusion of Colm Meaney because I'm a DS9 fan. Always liked his acting , but I honestly can't see him cast as Gene Hunt. Apart from the pleasant surprise of seeing him on the screen again, that was complete trash so I don't hold high hopes of it lasting. :(

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

As far as I am aware, public opinion seems to be that he is the only thing this show actually has going for it.

...

How do American remakes so constantly manage to get it so wrong? How? It's like a talent!

From: [identity profile] doylefan22.livejournal.com

I really, really, really can't bring myself to watch that trailer. I wish to remain unsullied.

From: [identity profile] malaleen.livejournal.com

I'm not even a huge fan of Life on Mars, but even I was horrified over how much of a badly done rip off the trailer seemed. It reminded me of the horrible American Coupling series done a few years ago.

As for Twilight, I have no idea about what the wank is about, but I can just about imagine, as the fandom seems very silly. But the books are pure crack, and I always compare it to silly and cracky fan fic. You know it's not good literature, but you can't stop reading anyway.

It reminded me of the horrible American Coupling series done a few years ago.

How...horrible?

From: [identity profile] malaleen.livejournal.com

It was awful. The script was exactly the same as the original pilot, but without the fun actors of the original

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

See, you know get my point about the different types of bad. Twilight = entertainingly bad, this trailer is just plain bad bad.

From: [identity profile] --kali--.livejournal.com

I have the ebook saved somewhere, but I never got round to reading it. I feel I should, it's got glittery vampires in it!!

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

That's probably the best way to read it - without any financial outlay. And I'd be too embarrassed to borrow it from the library.

From: [identity profile] days-of-yore.livejournal.com

That was so so much yuck that only one fact penetrated my brain - they didn't even use Bowie. What is the freaking point?

From: [identity profile] eido.livejournal.com

they didn't even use Bowie.

Honestly? I think Bowie saw the stupendous awfulness and just wouldn't let them use his song. ABC probably doesn't think Murkans know who Bowie is anyway... sad thing is, they're probably more right about that then I care to think about.

From: [identity profile] days-of-yore.livejournal.com

Ah, touche! That speaks volumes I suppose...

I think the real shame is that the TV people don't have enough faith in their public's acceptance of new and unusual things (that is, if Bowie is new to them). And they could at least of had a well-known American 80s song - it sounded to me like a sort of generic action jingle, which is wrong on so many levels.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

No, Bowie is quite legendary enough for the general public to be familir with him.

I suspect your first guess is more on the money.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

It's rather sad, given the usage of the actual song Life on Mars was so utterly classic in the original show.

From: [identity profile] eido.livejournal.com

Should I continue to remain blissfully ignorant of Twilight and it's sparkly vampires

YES!! But my inner tweener says NOOOOES!!!11 Come join the darkside, we have cookies. Cookies that make glitter rainbows when the sun hits them.

The series is like the "Dirty Dancing" or "The Cutting Edge" of this decade. Ludicrously soppy, puerile and you're just sitting there wondering why why WHY you're experiencing it as you're so very not 14 anymore .... but you own the Special Edition Director's Cuts of the DVDs anyway and have seen them more than once but will NEVER admit this amongst any adult within hearing distance. "Twilight" is just like that, except in the case of that series it's somehow skirting towards the early inception of HP moneys/fame. Which makes it almost frightening to a degree. People have actually been forecasting the "Twilight" movie series with LOTR levels of lucrativeness. So. Very. Frightening.

From: [identity profile] eido.livejournal.com

Why do I get the impression I just scared you with the ranty, flaily madness? *eyedarts and kicks incriminating crazy juice under the bed*

I do feel a bit sorry for that LoM remake though, as they seem to have neglected to realize John Simm can act. Very, very well at that. They apparently felt that was a null issue when casting their own Sam Tyler. It's one thing to try to step in John Simm's shoes, but I don't think that guy could come off more as cardboard.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Yeah, just a bit.

I agree with you on Sam Tyler: His entire character hinges on the acting, rather than the writing. Gene's the one with the witty lines, Sam's the one who's all about feeling.
