According to Teh Intarwebz, the Large Hadron Collider has yet to destroy the Earth, which is always good to know.

I shall continue to refresh those sites for updates of the situation.

Incidentally, on that note I am also yet to hear the related Torchwood radio play. Mainly because, well, I am no good at audio plays (or books on tape, either).

Maybe it's a short attention span, maybe I'm just a visual person, but in all honesty I tend to give up on audios after about five minutes. Because if I am not looking at something, I tend to get bored and impatient, and if I am looking at something unrelated (reading or writing or playing a game, whatever), I tend to tune the noise out.

...Yeah, I sort of fail at audios. Unless they are really funny.

And to now drastically switch topics and talk about something Uni related: I have finally had inspiration as to what to do this semester's creative writing piece about. Huzzah!

However, out of wanting some alternate thoughts to brainstorm with, I have a couple of requestions for you, flist.

1: What are some common phrases/sayings (or even quotes) that contain the words "one" or "once"? I already have "Once upon a time" and "one and only".

2: So, it's your traditional fairy-tale ending: the Knight in Shining Armour defeats the Evil Overlord, marries the Beautiful Princess, and becomes ruler of the Fair Kingdom. If one were to become rather cynical and realistic about the likelihood of a happily ever after, just what problems do you think would happen in said kingdom and marriage?

Answers may or may not make it into said piece, but they will help me get the plot nailed down in my head.

One for all, all for one - The Three Musketeers

Then must you speak/Of one that lov'd not wisely but too well - Othello Act 5, scene 2

The TW Audio play was pretty good...

Why doesn't the Knight in Shining Armour marry the Beautiful Prince?

As much as that would be an interesting concept to write with, I'm sort of doing a bit of a Happily Ever After deconstruction. So I want things to start pretty much exactly as they would at the end of a fairy tale, and then begin to, well, be realistic. *insert vague thoughts about a fighting man knowing fuck-all about ruling a country, etc.*

Interesting, when I heard about CERN in the radio news, I also thought of R.E.M. instantly :o)

A short while ago I saw Adam & Eva, which also starts with a Happy Ending scene (a firefighter rescues a woman from a burning house, they fall in love immediately, final credits), and then the movie goes on four years later, when their Happily Ever After live isn't very happy anymore. She wants a kid, he doesn't, and then he starts an affair with his nephew's nanny, and she meets a flame from her youth...
Interesting movie, quite funny but also thought provoking. If you happen to find it somewhere, I totally recommend to watch it.

The film sounds quite interesting - and rather like the Atwood short story which was one of the things I go ideas from. Except, you know, I'm pulling it on fairy tales.

It's in German, though, which isn't very helpful for me.

Oh, I thought there was an English dubbed version out there, but I may be wrong...

Government stuff. They'd be expected to rule the country someday, or immediately if it was a Principality. The average fairy-tale prince doesn't seem like someone who would be a natural at that.

All the beautiful princess really knows about him is that he has a thing for shoes, or climbing up people's hair, or dead bodies. It doesn't seem like a basis for marriage to me :( There's plenty you could do with them actually getting to know each other.

Yes, true.

And given where my stories going, I suspect the "getting to know" part is going to end up with a Princess who is less than impressed.

Once is never enough. One is the loneliest number. Once more with feeling.

Why yes, I am spending too much time with my MP3 collection, why do you ask?

She grew up eavesdropping on government councils and being told to go back to her sewing. He grew up learning to whack things with a sword. Only one of them has even half a clue how to run a country, and it's not the one who's nominally in charge. Cue conflict in the marriage, and a certain amount of I-told-you-so when whacking things turns out not to be the best approach to international relations. Optionally, add a devious advisor who does know how to run things, or at least has his own ideas about it.

I didn't even realise they were all music ones until you pointed it out.

The whacking things line amuses me - and the debates will have some relevence - because yeah, Mr Knight is going to tend that way. Mainly because (spoilers for something still in the planning phase) my main aim is to end up with Mr Knight basically falling down the slippery slope to Evil Overlord himself.

Ianto is on a bike. That's all I'm saying.

One hit wonder?

The Knight and Princess would discover each other's bad habits and not be able to stand one another. The nobles would rebel because the Knight's lineage is too lowly.

I listen to the majority of my audio books when I'm doing the washing up or cleaning. it really does make a horrid job that little bit better.

I strongly suspect I'd end up tuning it out doing that, too.
