Wanted: One profound post title

So, I just spent the past couple of days watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, because I've been meaning to get round to it forever.

And now I rather think I see where that show got it's reputation from.

To borrow something I said to one of my housemates last night, "So 18 episode in, it suddenly becomes a horror series."

And then there's the ending, which basically had me sitting there going "What" for about an hour.

But thought provoking. And now I possibly feel the need for something rather more cheery as a palate cleanser. The music is still stuck in my head. :/

Also, I am tired because I didn't get any sleep last night. No, these events are not actually related.

In more cheerful news, how about the cat that lives up a tree?

And we have we have a release date and summary for the next Discworld book, which is always good news.

...I've got a surprising amount of books I'm looking forward to coming out this year.

you can't finish yet. there's "another" ending. a far more satisfying ending called "the end of evangelion". the best way to explain the last two episodes is that they are from shinji's POV at a VERY important part of the film...

Seconding the recommendation for End of Evangelion. I think what's remarkable about this show is that, in addition to the fact that it sticks with you for days and weeks after that "Congratulations!", giving in to temptation and watching it again is pretty much as rewarding as watching it for the first time. (Or maybe this is just me; standard disclaimer, YMMV etc.)

I don't think I want to go for a rewatch quite just yet. For starters, I think it would be unimaginably depressing, and I could use something cheerful.

That sounds completely fair. In fact, from reading the comments here, I think I may be the strange one, given how I enjoyed every minute in all its crazy, tragic, messed-up glory. Then again, I do tend to like things dark and dreary. But since you're not me, how bout something outrageously silly like School Rumble or Yakitate!Japan, then? ^_^

I still do wish it were true. It would have made senior year so much easier XD

I certainly found it an entertaining watch, and can see rewatching it again at some point. I'm just in the mood for a change of pace. Though I can't really I say I know either of those at all.

Well, School Rumble starts off as a typical high-school-set romance/comedy, until it stops taking itself seriously several episodes in and gets really ridiculous.

Yakitate!Japan would be 50-ish (IIRC) episodes about baking bread. With a lot of bald jokes, puns, a superhuman clown and a recurring character who is an obvious caricature of Brad Pitt.

I don't think rom/com is really my scene. Unless there's something really spectacular about it.

it's pretty fun, and the music is surprisingly good. a mix of rock, rap/rock and there's a great moment near the end with the beatles' "i've got a feeling" (god knows how they got away with that...)

i've not seen the dub though so i dont know how well the music does translated, but there's a bit of engrish in the show as well so it's better subbed i think...

Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of those things (to me) that you hated and depressed you pretty much the entire way through, yet you CAN'T STOP WATCHING! There's just something about it that makes you need to see what happens next. I feel the same way about Death Note (it's the first time I've ever really wanted the main character to die). I'm considering doing a Code Geass/Evangelion parody (because giant robots, father issues, and collective consciousness, it was meant to be) but I'm not sure yet because the subject matter is really depressing and complicated.

I never hated it - I found it fascinating and interesting, mostly, if occasionally horrific. And, yeah, depressing. But it's certainly compelling.

While I rather enjoyed Death Note, including Light, psycho that he was. (I have a Ryuk perspective on him, he's so... interesting.)

I've seen one or two crossovers get started, but they never actually got very far. And a good one would require a lot of thinking out.

I had a love hate relationship with it really. It bummed me out big time, and I was horrified about 80 percent of the time, but I had to find out what happened next.

I'm very new to Death Note (volume 2) so right now I just hate him. But right now he doesn't have anyone to play off. I think I might like him better when he has L and Misa to talk to.

Death Note was one of the first manga series I read - I actually think it was the second, after FMA.

And Light and L is a great and glorious rivalry, which is incredibly entertaining.

I forgot to mention this in my earlier post, but I didn't mean a crossover, I meant a parody. I'd take Code Geass characters and throw them in the Evangelion universe, probably taking elements from Code Geass to tweak the story line. Knightmares instead of Evas, immortals instead of Angels. And Geass, of course. Stuff like that. Although I'm still not sure if I'm going to do it. I may end up putting up for adoption.

Yes it would, which is why I'm on the fence about doing it. If I decide to, it's going to be a long ways off, and if I can, I'd give it a somewhat happier ending. (I'm a sucker for the happy ending.) I don't really like most crossovers honestly. So few are well done, and often people stick two genres together that clearly don't belong in the same universe.

Yes, possibly a happy ending. After I make the characters go through a ton of misery, pain and mind rape of course. Though I still haven't made a committment to this! You can't make me!

Ah, yes. Evangelion. A guy at a party once tried to explain that ending to me, me not having seen it, and I sat there like you, going "what."

The blurb for 'Snuff' does look rather intriguing. And I agree with you, this is going to be a big year in my personal version of fandom.

It's even worse if you actually watch it. 24 episodes of stuff happening - weird, depressing, messed up and occasionally horrific and confusing stuff, but stuff none the less. And then the stuff screeches to a halt right at a climactic point and we get two episodes of surreal psychoanalysis.
