So, I see JKR has decided to throw some petrol on the ship-wank fires. (Headline editors are throwing even more on, of course, since Harry isn't even mentioned in the quotes currently going around, so making it about who he should be with is blatant trolling for attention.)

Otherwise... well, I can't say I am entirely surprised that the current wealthy, successful JKR with her stable relationship and family would tell a different story than the one that unemployed single mother on welfare JKR would tell.

Aside from that, I think I shall stay out of things until we actually get the entire interview and it's context.

The mixed headlines/quotes are why I think we have a lot of this out of context.

Although I wouldn't say JKR being wealthy has much to do with how she might write things differently (she seems to have a very good memory of where she comes from), I'll agree that she's older and more established in her own writing.

Yeah, unless the full article actually turns out to have some more extensive comments explaining further, I'm just going to assume that the headlines are being editorialised to get attention.

I think the wish-fulfillment comment was what pinged me: a poor, isolated single mother is going to have different wishes than a comfortable, successful married woman.

But, you know, I've seen the occasional bit of interesting meta floating around about how Mary Sues aren't all that bad because there's so much male wish fulfillment in fiction that it wouldn't be all that bad to have more stories about female wish fulfillment fantasy. So I'm kind of curious about how Ron/Hermione - which JKR admits was written for wish fulfillment purposes - is going to fit into that narrative. Because it's not the "Hero falls for the girl when he realises how special she really is" story female wish fulfillment gets stereotyped as.

I'm hoping you're right and it's taken out of context (BOTH jkr AND emma watson's quotes- because the "wonder if ron can make hermione happy" after YEARS of going against kloves blatant harmonian insinuations and her not following along feels like a stab in the back)

also she could have talked about how she changed as a writer without explicitly mentioned on what- that would have avoided lot of people hurting.

she was all coy and vague about things when the books were being released why the sudden "i'm going to be brutally honest and act as if this won't affect my fanbase" (which, excuse me, BULL. she WAS aware of the shipping wars R/Hr vs HHr back in GoF- she must be delusional herself if she doesn't think comments like "I almost killed ron" and then THIS doesn't stir some serious hurt and wank)

and the "I hope i dont hurt anyone" actually makes it worse

I'm going to just ignore headlines and what-not and avoid getting too involved in discussion until the actual article comes out. I've seen far too many cases of people getting incredibly worked up about what turns out to be tiny throw-away lines.

Though being fandom I imagine people will get all worked up over it anyway.

(Personally, I suspect it's going to be more "the movies highlight some ways that things could have worked out differently" than "no, I was wrong, I should have written it differently from the start". But, y'know, fandom.)

The fact that this interview was apparently carried out by Emma Watson may also play a part in things.
