Yes, I seem to be overusing the word "Random" in my headings as of late. But it is such a great word! Handy for all occasions, and all that.
First bit of fandom random: Apparently, GoF will be rated M in Australia, due to "fantasy violence." Holy crap! This bodes well for the dark and nasty scenes in it, I do believe. I am liking this muchly...
Though it does bring a question to mind: namely, what the hell is HBP going to be rated when that movie comes out? 'Cos, a lot of implied murders and acts of terrorism, poisoning, graphic violence (the nose-stomp, Sectumsempra, Bill Weasley's wounds), deaths, more torture, betrayal, implied child abuse, and Greyback, who's a whole ratings issue all on his own.
And in another fandom: Joss posted on Whedonesque! How freaking awesome! And post NFA Buffy-Angel comics, the Spike movie thing, hints for the future of the Serenity-verse. And the fact it is, you know, Joss, and therefore riotiously funny in it's own behalf is just great.

Oh, God, yes, let's do that. Naomi Robson (Robinson?) can join him.
Who needs reasons to watch CSI? :P Although I still maintain CSI(and Stargate SG-1) to be educational. I used to watch CSI while "studying" Chemistry, figuring that I'd learn something from it. Any episode in which they talked about organic things (word has escaped me) clearly justified it.

Well, I personally claim that I have learnt more from fantasy and sci-fi than I have from school. I mean, take the Harry Potter books. All you need to do is look up people's names, and you suddenly have truckloads of info on assorted mythologies.

No arguments there. They could either be shoved in with the kids (fun for the whole family), or given a separate room (fun for everyone else). And then made to go on "Dancing with the Stars".
Good point, there. That's one reason why I love HP so much; most of the names of people and places mean something, and that adds so much to it. Also helps with the understanding of the characters.
Stargate was fantastic for when I was doing Astronomy. Every now and then our lecturer would mention something and I'd think, 'I learnt that from SG!'

Dancing with the Stars? Truly, you are a cruel, sadistic individual.
And I have to agree, it's yet another reason why I like HP. I like fandoms with all those references to other things - like Prachett and Fforde and Douglas Adams did with their writing, like Buffy and Angel did on telly. The make you think, and they make me smile.
I never really got into Stargate. I want to watch more, and it would probably be easy to arrange (side effect of having hugely geeky friends - no matter what fandom, there is always someone with copies of it), but I just haven't had the time, or have been focused on other fandoms.

Pratchett and Douglas Adams! Oh, I do love them. They're the ones I aspire to write like (but have absolutely no hope of it)
Stargate (along with Harry Potter) was my first fandom. I loff it to pieces. *hugs SG DVDs and vids* I wish I had more geeky friends to borrow stuff from...unfortunately, as far as friends are concerned, I'm the geeky one. So if anything, they'll want to occasionally borrow stuff from me.

Well, though I was the geeky one at school, since meeting my frineds here at Uni...well, we are all "the geeky one". We just have different aspects of geekdom. I'm part of the squealy fangirl alliance, really.

Didn't think so. Okay, I can be artistic. My year nine art teacher always used to say that 'everybody can draw!', even after telling me that my attempt at shading a circle looked like a 'monster blob'.
That's a good question. Erm...Tom Williams. *groan* Can someone say over-used? Bring back Grant Bowler on The Mole! And Ada Nico-something, I think she won this year. Ooh, excitement.
They really are! What's worse is the fact that people who try to imitate them (and always end up failing miserably) are unbelievably annoying. You get it wrong, and your writing just ends up sounding wanky.
I'd really like to meet equally (or even more) geeky people at Uni. Or even any people at Uni, lol, I had very little luck in that department. Teehee, squealy fangirl alliance. Clearly the best :P

There are a few people (a couple of fanfic types) that can get a pretty good handle on the voice. But only a few - the rest are utter dreck. It's one of those things that can either be done really well or really badly - there is no middle ground.
Well, if you want to meet geeky types, join some clubs. FAS or CHAS or one of those one, there are lots of us there. Or, just turn up at the Mary Cooke lounge in Union House of an afternoon.

Dreck is a good word. I know I got it from somewhere, I am just not sure where. It's a bit like "yoink" in that regard. But then, as some of my posts indicate, I tend to use my own take on language.
Yes, join clubs, it'll be fun. And then you can watch videos and play games and have free lunches with us, it's fabulous fun!
It's not even hard. Turn up on Clubs and Societies day in O-week, fill in form, pay $5 dollars, and then once a week show up at Union house.

Only that kind of mindless optimism would get fairly grating on the nerves after ten seconds. So maybe the direct approach would work best.
'Your work is utter dreck (hooray!) but this class is compulsory and I will be marking you. So at least make it vaguely recognisable dreck and I won't fail you at the end of the semester.'
To which the obvious solution is putting a nice, artistic (read = colourful) label underneath everything you draw.
I love all those made up words, they make so much more sense than real words. "Yoink" is a fabulous word, I try and use that as much as possible. "Gack" is another one I'm quite fond of.
My friend and I were going to do that in O-Week, that was part of The Plan. But there were so many people around we decided to 'just do it later.' The rest of the story tells itself, really. *g*

Yes, made up words are fun. Then again, this is coming from someone who has somehow managed to invent their own language. Well, sort of. I'm still working on bits and pieces, but I know enough to be able to swear in it, anyway.
Yep, Yoink and Gack are very good words. I also like blended adjectives. Splediferous and Fantabulous and Prettiful. The tend to get used by me a lot (mainly because I tend to get far too over enthusiastic over things)
Well, I do believe that The Plan didn't seem to achieve much, did it? But next semester (or whenever) you must turn up. I'll spam your LJ to make sure. And I should be there, I think, on one of the stands...

I've probably put far too much thought into methods of art teaching...I put it down to the fact that I spent most of my time in art alternating between,
A) Thinking fandom thoughts,
B) Thinking random thoughts,
C) Concocting ways of destroying the teacher, and
D) Concocting ways of proving to the teacher that I couldn't draw for anything.
You managed to somehow invent your own language...and can swear in it? *giggles* That's fantastic, do I get a sample? I always wanted to make up my own language, but didn't get past making up the swear words. And even then they sounded too much like English swear words for me to get away with them during class.
Prettiful! I love that word. Fantabulous gets my vote as well. And fantasmagorical, a friend of mine made that up and I adopted it because I liked it so much.
No, as far as plans go that wasn't exactly a winner.

Ah, Art. Great fun for thinking about all sorts of things that have nothing to do with art whatsoever.
Well, it's only sort of a language at the moment. I know a few bits and pieces, but I don't know enough to say much at all, really. A few basic phrases, some grammer rules, and I know how it's pronounced, but other than that, not a lot. And I put far too much effort into working out the swearing part.
Fantasmagorical is a good one, I shall have to remember that.
