“Such profanity, from one so young,” Reinette tutted. “You really are little more than a common prostitute.”

0_o <-- Even Cybermen are confuzzled by that fic.

(Seriously, what? And that second one made my brain bleed. True story.)

OH NOES, YOUR POOR BRAIN!

The confuzzled Cybermen pity you.

What is this strange mist?

It causes me to write in run-on sentences and do you know that it may be a job for this thing (http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2141552)?

Bashing!fics: Like Dementors, in a way.

They make you feel cold and clammy and like you'll never be happy again? That about sums up my reading experience there. And I merely skimmed!

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I think I am so greatful for a change from the endless post-Doomsday emo!fic, that I find these merely amusingly bad.

But as I commented in my last post, bashing!fic is rather less detestable when it is this badly written.

From: [identity profile] magic-lilybean.livejournal.com

You're right. I'm so ungrateful. I should just be happy the emo fandom cheered up a bit, sort of. I hang my head in shame.

PS? Icon=Sporfle!

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Stupid beats out emo, at least when it comes to being entertaining.

And I *heart* that icon.

Does Reinette do that in the episode or something? Say something nasty to Rose and then pretend she hadn't later? Because I can't see Rose running off to tell the Doctor what nasty Reinette said, but so far that seems to be a strong theme.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

No, worse: She snogged the Doctor. And he fell in love with her. That evil bitch, etc.

But someone wanted nasty!Reinette, and wrote a challenge containing that, which I linked to here.

From: [identity profile] njelruch.livejournal.com

This all could have been avoided if only the Doctor had screamed "Eeew! Les cooties!" like he was supposed to.

From: [identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com

I am strangely drawn to the idea of Reinette using her l33t courtesan skillz to make sure Ten never leaves her out of leavingness, but this is all a bit... yeah.

I think fandom is scared that the Doctor would leave them Rose for Reinette. Emo woes!

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

It's one of those interestingly dark takes on things that would actually make good reading, but rarely gets done (as the depressing lack of dark Rose/Doctor stuff demonstrates)

It sort of makes me want to be very, very evil and use oppressive Ten/Reinette icons all the time.

From: [identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com

Reinette is not after Louis XV because she loves him, she's after him because Being Louis XV's Mistress is, like, the best job in France. So the question is whether Reinette is too used to manipulating men to get what she wants. Like how Rose is too used to crying for attention and it messed her up a bit? Ten gets a bit bored or weird or emo and Rose has no idea what to do, but Reinette'd know. And if she wanted Rose gone she'd probably find a way to make that happen.

I dunno why there is not more dark Doctor/Rose. There should be. Maybe people just like it fluffy and the darkfic people can't find an angle on it or something?

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

See, interesting. And the power dynamic stuff could be fascinating.

If there was darkfic, I'd so read it. I hate the way the fluffy fic takes what is a genuinely interesting and messed up relationship, and blands it into infinity.

From: [identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com

I am trying to think how to give it enough context not to just seem like character-bashing? But it could be interesting, cos I think pushing Rose out would be fairly simple for Reinette (just provoke Rose's jealousy a bit and try to hold the Doctor's attention as much as possible and eventually Rose'd just walk). Then it'd go a bit messy because Reinette would have to convince Ten that he needed her and he'd fall into that far too easily and he so doesn't need someone playing to his emo like that.

I has tried to write dark Ten/Rose a few times. It's a bit tricky partly because the fanon version is so overwhelmingly twee.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

That's a good point. The Rosefen would be all over it, for the same reason we got the request that started all this. It'd be very, very tricky to write well, that's for sure.

I keep trying to come up with ideas for more fanfic, and I always tend towards the dark Ten/Rose stuff. But I can't get something that sticks in my mind long enough to want to write.

From: [identity profile] melata-fic.livejournal.com

Is it just me, or do all these stories make Rose out to be a petty and jealous bitch? It doesn't do much to make me side with Rose.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

It's like the Rose Pearse fics, in which the regulars act like such twats that you end up sympathising with people the writers really don't intend.

From: [identity profile] melata-fic.livejournal.com

I've only read the story you linked to, I think. But that's exactly what I did. Silly writers.

(One of them doesn't actually dislike Reinette, from a reply to a review of hers. I sort of want to ask her why she's responding to the challenge, then.)

I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I couldn't read the long one, it made my thoughts hurt.

I think the fact that Rose never got any Angsty Time Lord Cock (or even a tonguey kiss) has affected the girlies more than they would perhaps like to admit?
I need to lie down now, I am sads.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I think the fact that Rose never got any Angsty Time Lord Cock (or even a tonguey kiss) has affected the girlies more than they would perhaps like to admit?

Oh yes. Considering the amount of people I saw who were utterly outraged they didn't get an actual kiss before Rose left, or that he never got to say "I love you," there's some great big entitlement issues going on here.

From: [identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com

I was a bit tempted the other day to meta on the ways in which New Who occasionally hits problems because it's approaching the Doctor as though his characterisation within itself is part of a greater whole, and how it's tricky when it hits things like why he can't kiss Rose or say he loves people. (Partly that's an audience thing, obviously, but it's also a character issue.)

And not just in character terms. "Cult of Skaro"? The new series has never mentioned Skaro by name. So what's the Cult of Skaro if we're not prepared to look up backstory on the internets?

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

The Skaro thing you can kind of get away with, because Cult implies religion or somesuch, and religions have been known to have weird names in the past. So for n00bs, it's just a weird name for special Daleks, whereas for oldbies or researchers, it has a connection to the planet Skaro.

From: [identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com

I wonder how many people now think the Doctor's home world was called Arcadia.

From: [identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com

The whole Not Mentioning Gallifrey thing is starting to get a bit silly, isn't it?

From: [identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com

It's bizarre. Especially when the kiddie-aimed spinoff medis like the kids' magazine, the annual and those Monsters books happily chuck in stuff about President Romana and Skaro and the Ice Warriors but still refer to "the Doctor's home planet".

I need to start writing that Reinette fic, methinks.

Curse the plotbunnies! Curse my slow writing skill!

As to the badfic, the remark from Reinette that Rose looks like a clown with that much makeup makes *me* laugh. Obviously the fanbrats have no idea about what fashionable makeup at the French court in the 18th century actually *was*. (White powdered faces, bright and overdone colours to accent all the other features... That remark might as well be reversed.)

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Plotbunnies are unpredictable bastards, are they not?

And your comments about the court makeup are making me think of Casanova.
xwingace: (dance)

From: [personal profile] xwingace

I've actually had that particular plotbunny for a while already. I was hoping to suppress it, actually, since I fear it might lead to a whole different kind of Reinette-Sue.

Add to that that I've already started a crossover which looks to become long if it works at all, and me taking on an assignment for the Jack Harkness crossover ficathon which will also need a lot of background laying, I don't *need* more bunnies. I just can't write that quickly.

Yup, Casanova. Although that show played fast and loose with the actual historical accuracy, it *was* very effective in portraying the feel of the periods and locations. Better than GITF, I believe :-)

XWA

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

You poor dear, drowning in all those fics. :(

And Casanova was supposed to be a period piece, albeit a modernised one. GitF was more of a... Science Fiction Fairy Tale, I think I saw it described as once.
xwingace: (Default)

From: [personal profile] xwingace

To be fair, I only have myself to blame :-)

True for Casanova and GITF. I think also for GITF the brief was 'I want it to look nice, never mind the exact fashion of the year.'
