Stupid thing still has 20% to go

I am generally fine with RPF. I have, one or two times, even recced it to others. But I always go for fics in which there is a clear line drawn between the fantasy and the reality. The ones in which the RP ship is clearly drawn from who they play - your lead example is the Dan/Emma lot - they are the ones that I don't really go for. The fantasy/reality line gets a little too blurred for my liking.

So the Tennant/Piper RP shipping hasn't really been my thing. They have had a very close friendship (described at one point as sibling-like), and both have reasonably long-term significant others. If you make it crack fantasy, great, I'll read it. But seriously shipping it is something I just don't get.

And it's not something I generally read RPF for. I generally just skim past it when it shows up on my flist. But someone made a reference to the latest chapter of someone's Tennant/Piper epic, and I had to see for myself.

And thus we have... Sophia Myles getting hit by a car. And fanbrats squeeing over the possibility of her death, in order to preserve their cute happily ever after.

I don't think anything in fandom has sickened me so much in a long, long time.

She skated towards them to try and help, but stopped again when she noticed David's arousal through his trousers.

Hooray!

"I so wish that david tennant was shagging me but if i can't have the real thing then i suppose reading a fiction about him shagging billie will have to do!"

...this in no way confirms certain assumptions.

WTF is that about? She's mad that he's a heterosexual man? Do the writers know any men at all?

Yeah, the fantasizing about a real person being in a terrible accident is real great story-telling, isn't it? What is wrong with these people?

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

It's just... issues, much. I thought people had quit killing opposing characters in fandom fics because of lack of taste, so the fact it shows up in RPF. Is more than a little disturbing.

Yeah, as a some-times RPF/RPS reader/writer, stuff like that is really, really disgusting, and embarrassing. It's why I usually keep my RPF interests to myself, because I don't want to be associated with those sorts of people, ugh.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I like some RPF. Mostly the vaguely crack sort that doesn't take itself too seriously, but still I'm not opposed to the genre. I just find this utterly appalling. Can't they do it the traditional way, and just pretend the real GFs or BFs don't exist?

It's like a foul taste, these reviews. The newest has me very seriously contemplating deleting the link. Maybe I could fake technical difficulties for a few hours.

What kills me is that the writer's 15 and so are most of her reviewers. Nothing against 15 year olds, I was one not long ago, but...oh I don't know.

"She got hit by a car...Cute chapter."

Seriously.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Someone please tell me I wasn't nearly that horrid when I was 15. I don't think I could bare it. Kids these days...

The reviews just... it's like you said, a foul taste.

Amen to that. RPF should be kept in its own little comm somewhere, so i can take it OFF my list. i dont read it because these are REAL people, and their lives dont need to be fantasised about like that IMHO - their characters are enough.

Else i mgiht have to start writing tonnes of RPF wherein I shag Peter Davison senselessly day and night, despite the existence of his real family and 3 kids (one grown up though). Ahem.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I didn't mind a bit of crack RPF - it can be fun. Just, you know, it's always very obviously fantasy rather than reality.

Hey, write all the RPF you want. Just don't go killing off his family.

Tinhats have forever scarred me what RPF is concerned. It burnsssss...

What is with the recent Tennant/Piper upswing, anyway? Now that Rose and the Doctor are universes apart, they go for the next best thing?

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Oh yes, LotR, where the tinhats started in their epic wankiness.

And I think that the Rose/Doctor thing is pretty much that. Cynical, but probably very true.

And if one were to confront them about it, they'd say "It's just fanfic, I don't really want that to happen!" Never mind this is the fandom where someone's LJ episode review showed up on the behind-the-scenes documentary, and some of the show writers have been known to read fanfic.

Sometimes fandom truly depresses me.

There are simply no words, are there?

I'm an RPF (mostly slash) writer and I find this utterly disturbing and disgusting - and I used to be in LOTR RPS fandom. It takes a great deal to disturb me and this did it.

Though I admit I write Dr Who RPF myself and would really loathe to be tarred with the same brush.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I don't write RPF (I don't write very much fic at all, come to that), but I have read an enjoyed it on occasion. It's not a genre issues, it's what is specifically going on around this fic that disturbs me.

(You wrote some? Links, plz)

Oh my. I don't even want to go look.

Me own RPF fandom uses the personas that the people involved are projecting and sort of acting on-screen and is obv not really properly them and has fic with comedy coconuts and pink houses and people living in cupboards. I have no guilt.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

No, you don't.

See, slightly cracked out and obviously fictional RPF is another matter entirely.

From: [identity profile] rachael-random.livejournal.com

as one of the two writters of the fic you are discussing, obviously im going to defend it. Yes I am 15. No, I don't hate Sophia. Guys just like DW stories it's fiction... I respect real relationships and I did state that when me and my friend started writting it. Next time I will be sure to enlighten this again. I do agree with some of the points you have made.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Just because you state it's just fiction, doesn't make it nice. Fictional concepts can be just as offensive - if not more so - than factual one, because they trivialise important ideas. There's a reason books get banned, after all.

It's just a matter of common decency - going around saying how wonderful it would be is so-and-so died is never nice, and doing so in order so that you can get a couple together? Is just so far beyond nice it's staggering. And the way people are going on about how wonderful it is in the comments? Is deeply disturbing. Especially since some of these are the same people who go on about how David and Billie must be in love.

Another thing to consider is that the Doctor Who fandom is one in which the creators have a heavy online involvement - things on LiveJournal have been known to get back to the team at Cardiff numerous times. For you, this might just be fun, but could you imagine what David - or, God forbid, Sophia - would feel like if he found that people were writing stories about her being grieviously injured? They aren't just characters, they are real people, and how would you feel if someone was writing stories about you being hit by a car, even if they said "it's just fiction"?

(Also, just as I disclaimer, I refuse to read fanfic, even if just with fictional characters, in which an opposing love interest is killed off on principle)

You know, I really was afraid I was the only one completely squicked out by the DT/BP twoo-wuv-4-evah RPF, (admittedly, I'm one of those people for whom even the idea of RPF is uncomfortable, but I don't necessarily begrudge others their ideas), but I'm glad to know I wasn't alone, and the lone person terrified that someone on the production team would come across it and think that it represented the rest of us...
Yeaaach. What a distasteful and unfortunate nightmare that would be...

But now that I hear (missed the post, thank goodness) that they've taken it that one demented step further, and I'm even more horrified. (In that "holy-shit-they-said-WHAT!!!???" sort of way.)

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

As the comments here show - and those on [livejournal.com profile] tennant_love, and the poll results there, as well - you are far from alone in that opinion. And the production team worries are something that have defintey crossed my mind. I mean, we know for a fact people involved with the pay a certain amount of attention to LJ (like when it showed up on that Confidential...), so the sheer lack of thought in this particular fic boggled me completely.
