In a move that is shocking probably no-one, there seems to be yet more silliness going around in Doctor Who fandom.

However, rather than wank, we seem to have attracted an outraged "Think of the children!" type, who is utterly shocked, shocked that people are publicly writing "immoral and degenerate writings" about a children's show. Obviously, she's never seen the Harry Potter fandom.

The thing that has captured my interest the most is how on earth our Helen Lovejoy (namely [livejournal.com profile] nyssaisbest) managed to stumble across the fic in question.

See, the writer of said fics, [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1 isn't exactly a BNF. She's one of the more prolific Ten/Martha writers, admittedly, but that just makes her a prolific member of a minority ship. (Yes, it's a minority ship. One of the larger minority ships, but still one that's a minority) As far as I am aware she doesn't post her fics anywhere other than LJ. She doesn't have a huge flist.

So, as far as I'm aware, the only awareness of her fics is for the 900-odd members of [livejournal.com profile] lifeonmartha, any members of [livejournal.com profile] smith_n_jones who aren't also in LoM, and whoever's read the relevent [livejournal.com profile] who_daily post. In total, that's what, 1000-2000 people? Tiny compared to the internet.

So, why [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1? If someone has a problem with adult fic, why not go after one of the BNFs? Or one of the adult fics on the Teaspoon, which is easily googlable, and just this week has had fics with overt sexual references in the title? Why, when she has the entire of the internet and Doctor Who fandom to be outraged by, is the one person she's decided to make her stand against "filth" to, a prolific but not hugely known author in small corner of fandom?

I just don't get it.

(I'll also add that the apparent "real" name [livejournal.com profile] nyssaisbest - Susan Costello - is terribly reminiscent of a certain Torchwood character, which does nothing to ease suspicions of someone sockpuppeting)

Oh fandom. *shakes head*

On the subject of fandom, that Doctor/Martha ship manifesto I am doing is due in in a week. Just a reminder if there are any recs, quotes, ideas or whatever else you want me to include, here's the post to let me know.

*This post title was brought to you by the exceedingly silly conversations I had over dinner today, in which we amused ourselves by seeing just how much more hilarious everything became when "...IN YOUR PANTS!" was affixed on the end of sentences.

I think it was [livejournal.com profile] ladymako71 who said she google searched for ages and no-one's journal came up. It's just impossible for someone to 'stumble' across this fic.

This all smells v fishy.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I am sure it is possible to just stumble across the fic, but I really would love to hear Madam's explanation for exactly how she found it. Thus far I've seen very little fact, and a lot of outrage and offendedness.

From: [identity profile] in-the-end.livejournal.com

I really would love to hear Madam's explanation for exactly how she found it.

She found it cos she has another lj accountYes. Me too.

From: [identity profile] jo-mako.livejournal.com

yeah it was me that went and googled around for a good while trying to come up with a direct hit to pers' fics, like Susie claims...the only way I actually got the hit she would have seen is by typing in pers' full handle!

And I got real creative with the googling...any time I punched in a word remotely 'Doctor Who adult' into my searches, I got Ten/Rose....for 12 pages. So bullshite you sock puppet! lol

It also seems odd that our crusader for decency is complaining about having "received emails". For one thing, that's just not normal behaviour.

For another, there's no public email listed in her profile.

She may, of course, be confusing emails with comment notifications, but it seems ... odd. "The h8ers are disagreeing with me by email!"

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I didn't find that one at all confusing, mainly because I can see how the whole comment notification thing - especially since the froms are listed as the LJ user.

Sounded like a fairly obvious newbie mistake (or at east newbie wording) to make.

Though the inversion of the lurkers support me in email cliche does amuse.

From: [identity profile] malaleen.livejournal.com

I asked if [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1 got any IP's from the troll, but like I had feared, she wasn't tracking them at the time.

This entire thing is just fishy and highly suspicious. Like you said, there's no reason to target this author, because she isn't well known yet, nor does she have an impressive flist. And she's never had any run-ins with anyone that I know of.

While this might be a one off thing, as maybe the troll/sock puppet wanted to try out this shit on some who might not respond back, and got a hell of a surprise in return from fandom. But we might also see this sock trying on more BNF names in the near future.

This is so completely stupid.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I do wonder if we shall ever hear from her again - I find it surprising that someone so outraged by "filth" has found only one person in fandom to be offended by. Surely there are others to be worked up about - then again, going by their LJ they haven't joined any comms or friended anyone, and yet still seems to expect responses to their (rather... interesting) posts.

I will admit that it's sort of hilarious in light of the whole Strikethrough/Boldthrough/Anti-childporn thing. Someone getting worked up by two adults having vanilla sex seems so... quaint.

From: [identity profile] malaleen.livejournal.com

I was like Dude, this is nothing on some of the porn I've read in my fandom days. I wanted to point her to some of the more crazy HP stuff, but figured on the off hand chance she really was a nutter over this kind of stuff, that fandom didn't need more problems now.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I do find it amazing that, given the complete and utter cracktasticness of Doctor Who canon, it's so incredibly vanilla when it comes to porn. I mean, it avoids some of the squickier kinks I have seen in other fandoms (for which I am greatful), but it's a bit sad, really.

Honestly, given the child porn kerfuffle, this wouldn't even hit the radar of HP.

From: [identity profile] malaleen.livejournal.com

I know. When I think of all the porn-tastic things I've read over the years, I do realize that most DW smut is very vanilla.

Of course that's not really surprising, when you consider that just a few years ago, a large portion of the fandom considered the Doctor asexual. And now, and even larger portion is hung up on the OTP/happily-ever-after crap.

No one wants to write any down and dirty smut any more /emo face.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Indeed. It's all angst angst angst or crappilyhappily ever after. (Well, and lots of Doctor/Master slash. Which I love, but sometimes I'd like to read some het, too, you know?)

Also: I'd like to see more long, plotty fic with Martha. Not necessarily shippy, but just plot stuff involving Martha. Though I have seen very little plotty stuff that didn't involve bloody parallel universe reunions as of late.

From: [identity profile] malaleen.livejournal.com

I'm waiting for [livejournal.com profile] violetisbest's sequel to her fic "Nothing but Flowers". I suspect it will be wonderfully plotty, smutty and long.

But I know what you mean about lack of Martha fic. Unless you are hanging out at LoM, the only Martha fic you tend to find is ones that have her standing back helping Ten reunite with his precious Rose.

And I'm starting to think we need to fight those all reunion fics with fire, as they seem to be choking the life out of this fandom

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I've vaguely been considering having a [livejournal.com profile] lifeonmartha Martha ficathon, sometime after the [livejournal.com profile] telling_a_story thing is over and done with.

We need an S3 ficathon at some point, anyway.

From: [identity profile] malaleen.livejournal.com

I've been sort of thinking the same thing for LoM as well. There was also a suggestion we could do an Advent type thing for Martha too, that wouldn't necessarily have to be fan fic... could be graphics, fan mixes, art, fic.

Just this weekend, I had a very interesting challenge idea of "anyone but Ten" where you could have Martha interact with any DW-verse character, but Ten couldn't be one of them. So many possibilities, but challenges have never worked well at LoM.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Well, I'd hold of on anything until the Story comm challenge is over and done with.

But occasionally putting up posts that take suggestions for comm activities - which those of us who miss out on the chats can access - might get some discussion and enthusiasm going for something more.

From: [identity profile] malaleen.livejournal.com

I wasn't planning on doing anything right now. Was more thinking of Oct, Nov, Dec time frame.

But a suggestion post about what activities members would like to see happening wouldn't be a bad idea.

Maybe I'll do that after I get that Mod thing done.

Yes, we all need that.

I vote sockpuppet/troll. And a particularly unimaginative one at that. *rolls eyes*

who is utterly shocked, shocked that people are publicly writing "immoral and degenerate writings" about a children's show. Obviously, she's never seen the Harry Potter fandom.

This cracked me up this morning. *snickers*

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Well, it's true. No-one brings the dirtybadwrong and batshit lunacy in porn quite like Harry Potter. Which is great when you want crack or diversity in your porn, but it's completely and utterly daft if you step back and take an outside look at things.
longtimegone: (Default)

From: [personal profile] longtimegone

*laughs and laughs* You're so right! Most times it can be more difficult to find the vanilla stuff in HP! :)) It does look completely daft from the outside!

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Well, HP vanilla isn't that hard to find if one knows where to look. It's just the fandom also happens to have an impressively large proportion of fics devoted to kinks of all types, from mild to really, really disturbing.

From: [identity profile] chocolatepot.livejournal.com

[livejournal.com profile] nyssaisbest is quite obviously a troll, for the vry srs reason that no one would seriously say that Nyssa is best. I hope.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

It has aways bugged me that behind Nyssa, there is a freaking awesome emotional character concept - that her Father's face has been stolen by the Master, by this hugely evil person - and it was barely even touched upon. So much could have been done with her, and it wasn't.

Also, given the Doctor's Gallifrey angst, the fact the Master (still wearing her Dad's face) went and destroyed her entire freaking planet and Nyssa barey reacted looks really bizarre in retrospect.

From: [identity profile] wiliqueen.livejournal.com

I have a great and abiding Nyssa love from overidentifying with her as a young teen. :-) And I'm getting a lot into the things you mention in the Whacking Great WIP Wot Got Mightily Jossed By The Ending Of Series 3 (But I'm Ignoring That). (If I ever finish the Blood Ties WIP that interrupted it...)

So I'm absurdly offended that this pathetic troll has chosen that name for her little vendetta. Which has to be a personal thing against this particular author. Or possibly an intended-to-be-harmless-but-woefully-ill-conceived practical joke.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I think Nyssa as a character pretty much redefines the term "under-used". Maybe it's just me, but I honestly can't understand how you can create a character with this wealth of dramatic potential to mine, and then completely fail to use it at all.

From: [identity profile] koshiroryuu.livejournal.com

Obviously you're not John Nathan-Turner. He excelled at that kind of thing.

From: [identity profile] gryffinclaw.livejournal.com

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

People need to leave my fandoms alone.

Just when the HP drama starts to die down the DW drama pics up.

There is NOTHING wrong with DW porn! Hello? Even in the show there is subtext. Lots of it!

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Two fandoms, both alike in wankiness
In fair LiveJournal, where we lay our scene...

They never stop, do they?

Correction: Even on the show there is phonesex.

Please! Children's show my arse!

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

If you look at those scenes just as screencaps, they are the filthiest filth that ever did filth.

Y HALO THAR SMUTTY SUBTEXT!

From: [identity profile] koshiroryuu.livejournal.com

Sock, sock, sockity sock-like sock. With extra special sockiness on top.

(namely nyssaisbest)

Oh, yeah, that's not going to fuel anyone's Nyssa hate, not at all. Whatever this person is trying to do, here, I wouldn't be surprised if [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1 is just an innocent bystander in the wrong place at the wrong time.

And if it's a batchipper trying to cause trouble for Team Martha or whatever, then she's going about it all wrong; she should've called herself marthaisbest and attacked all the most well-known batchipper fic. Have we learned nothing from MsScribe? Jeez!

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I just had one thought when I saw the Nyssa thing - namely that [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj is a very vocal hater of Nyssa. Which is another reason the name made me wonder.

And obviously this is a n00b in the ways of sockpuppeting (if, indeed, it is a sock).

From: [identity profile] koshiroryuu.livejournal.com

Yeah, it made me think of Nos, too, and there seems to be lots of people who are inexplicably cranky with her, so it might be a swipe at her. Hrm.
