Over on Ye Olde Outpost Gallifrey Forums, there is someone informing us that there is due to be an important announcement of Doctor Who's future coming up, embargoed until tomorrow (UK time). And it's supposedly good news, so it seems unlikely to be the impending cancellation.
Cue mass speculation.
The main thought seems to be official confirmation of S5, but it strikes me as a very odd time to announce something like that, especially given that S4 wasn't announced officially until the S3 premiere, and the rumours about cancellation or what-all have been quiet as of late. Which makes me think it's somehow tied to the whole Tennant in Hamlet thing.
I guess we'll see when the embargo lifts. Which, according to some quick mental calculations, should be about 9am Melbourne time. I should be awake to see it, then...
ETA: The person who scooped the fact there is an announcement coming up is hinting at contents.
Deej - My source is 100 per cent reliable. It will be a midnight press release, and it will be about series five, and the news probably does stem from David Tennant's tenure at the RSC next year. But fans of Tennant needn't worry. I wish I could say more but I don't want to get in trouble. Probably said too much already...
I am adding one plus one here, and getting Yay!
ETA2:
Courtesy of The Doctors Trainers (Who has in the past had knowledge of casting and behind the scene stuff ages before announcements): I'm guessing the news in question will be that DT is going to stay on in the role beyond series 4 despite his RSC commitments, but that that the show will be rested briefly to accomodate DT treading the boards, returning with three specials for 2009 and Series 5 being deferred to 2010. Just guessing of course (With that winking smiley just after the final sentence)
Response from Deej - Excellent guess. Spot on. Well done.
Well, that's... whoa. Serious whoa.
And in completely unrelated news. This song is completely made of awesome

Maybe the announcement will have more.

And as a fan of multi-Doctor stories, Christmas specials et al, I suspect it's just the word "special" that buzzes me.

Gah, the wait for the proper announcement is killing me already.

Blimey- very interesting news indeed and just after I'd sworn off the OG for a couple of weeks. The amount of rancour there makes my head hurt

It is a bit of a stunner - not something I saw coming at all (I was pretty much certain Tennant was off after Series 4).

If this does turn out tobe true, I wonder what this means for Companions (taking onboard RTD's comments about CT's character originally being a placeholder)

I do wonder. Will we have a known companion (Donna and/or Martha) for the specials? Or someone new? And what about the next series, when it comes along, new or old companion?

I didn't realise you were one of the people who suggested that about Martha- sorry!
I wouldn't mind seeing SJS turning up again (if they do go with the idea of specials , a cross over with the SJS adventures isn't unlikely given that it's mroe kid friendly than Torchwood).

And I wouldn't mind seeing more of Sarah Jane at all.

I do sometime wish Pertwee was still alive. His was the first Doctor I ever saw as my Dad made me watch some episodes when I was about 5 or 6. The first one was Pertwee's first and had scary plstic shop dummies. Flash forward about 12 years and to New Who. I sit down to watch Rose , and there they were- the Autons. Not sure who was mroe frightenend, me or the little sib.

I may get some sort of a social life back that year. With regards to companion, I'm not sure where that leaves us. I would like to see Freema back for a special but I'm not sure we will. The specials factor will probably fit in with Tate's schedule as well as Tennants so we might see Donna back. Or 3 lots of new one off companions which I don't like the idea of at all.

I'm very curious as to companions as well. But I don't think I like the idea of 3 lots of new ones. I could cope with one new lot for all three, maybe, but I'd prefer sticking with Martha and/or Donna.
