drakyndra: The Music Meister demands you sing! (Ten and Martha)

Turn my back on fandom for just a few hours (Because I had to actually, you know, study and all), and the shit manages to hit the fan. Multiple times.

Firstly, on the plagiarism fiasco: Apparently it wasn't just Cassie Claire. If ever a post was going to cause wank, this'd be it.

Meanwhile, over in the Doctor Who fandom, we have some interesting news about S3, as well as Doctor and Martha pics.

And naturally, the photos have been causing chaos. Of many kinds (just take a look around, and you'll see), but most notably, the declaration of Martha as "a chavvy whore". To which I respond: Bitch, please.

Oh, and apparently if you wear dark trousers and shoes, you are a "clone of Rose".

Personally, I really like Martha's outfit - the hair is rather interesting, and I love the jacket. The suit is a bit less of a nice surprise, but it has grown on me a bit. So not hate, but I'll wait and see about it.

Oh, and we have some David/Billie RPF which is giving me teh lulz.

Oh, fandom...

ETA: To the people who have been in the fandom longer than me. Exactly how many late 20th century companions did the Doctor have in a row? Please post your reponses to everyone whining about having a saying they can't have two 21st century companions in a row.

ETA2: Ah, the sweet taste of sanity.

I have a feeling that the fanpoodles have failed to comprehend the, uh, classist element of chavism, and just assume it's equivalent to "slut".

Either that, or they think Rose is meant to be middle class. I don't know. British social structure is confusing.

The hoop earrings are a bit chavvy, but ROSE WORE THEM TOO.

She's not meant to be, but Billie seemed to play her as though she was. */catty-but-honest*

I wore hoop earrings to work the other day, but I felt really conspicuous and took them out. DAMMIT POP CULTURE FOR STEALING MY EARRINGS!

I actually couldn't tell, until she started going on about mortgages, and that was the script, not Billie. EXPLAIN.

When I was in high school, true chavvery was when you had three sets of huge chunky gold hoops that were a bit horseshoe-shaped.

I've never been quite able to put my finger on it. And mostly fandom is too middle-class to help me. Having discussed it in Real Life and a few times in the interwebs, a conclusion was reached that her confidence is not the bravado of the chav or the righteous rebellion of the educated poor, but rather the "I own this place!" of the habitually wealthy and pandered-to. There is something in the stance and movement of Rose. Something slightly off. It's why she's always felt like she was talking down to people when she bonded with the hired help. She's very, very convinced that she's "better than this," not just when she speechifies it, but in her very aura. She starts out that way, and it's not even that we can say she picked it up at university since Rose has no A-levels.

Looks like a chav, talks like a chav, acts like a Yah with a pashmina and appointments for "lunch, darling".

*nods* That actually defines it quite well.

I've always been a bit uncomfortable with the "making friends with the hired help" scenes. Having worked as a cleaner myself, the gratitude they always showed at having Rose take an interest him them seemed a bit unrealistic. In that situation, I'd have been more like, "Terribly nice of you to acknowlege me as a human being, not enough people do it, pat yourself on the back, but GODDAMMIT move out of my way and let me get on with earning my money."

God, yes. And the slightly worrying idea that she is especially wonderful to talk to people who are clearly beneath her, coupled with the notion that These Are Her Sort. There was always something slightly unconvincing about it, because generally she had no reason to talk to them other than to make her look Abnormally Nice. (Which doesn't fit anything else, making it even more bizarre.)

It's a well-known fact that domestic employees are inferior to everyone else, and only absolute saints will talk to them. Kind of like Untouchables, only in ugly uniforms.

Weirdly, I'm reminded of the fic I was going to write, where Romana leads an Ood revolution. I think she'd be up for that.

From: [identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com

Did anyone else feel a bit uncomfortable that Ood slavery was handwaved in the end?

Yes. I think that their inclusion in the list of dead was intended as a Sign, but nothing was learnt except that Oods are highly susceptible to Satan.

Alas for the Ood.

Rose gets pissy about them being domestic help, but even she just handwaves that whole "slavery" thing by the end. And the Doctor couldn't be bothered to save them. Bastards.

They do things for other people. They are unclean. Rose is like Mother Teresa only nice!
