It has come to my attention (via [livejournal.com profile] altheas's rather disturbing co-worker, and some truly appalling Sue-fics) that as of late, the name "Melissa" has been used in a lot of disturbing and unnatural ways. As a barer of this name, I am shocked and appalled.

So, in order to escape these horrific connotations, I have decided that I shall now renounce the name Melissa, and take on an entirely new name.

Sadly, I have no suitable back-up.

So, I put this out to you, my noble flist: Find me a new name.

I am open to all suggestions, though I would quite like it if you can supply a good reason why said suggestions are suitable for me to take as my new name.

The winner will be rewarded with...something. I am sure it will be glorious and magnificent.

So, go, my flist, and find me a name!

Amaterasu.

I always liked that name.

It's from Japanese mythology, I think. Means something about "Star in the sky" or "Shining in the heavens" or something...

From: [identity profile] ranorith.livejournal.com

It's japanese, so it's pronounced phonetically, right?
A-me-te-ra-su.
You CAN drop the "u" on "su" with verbs i know, but i don't think so with nouns.

Though the "r" is more of an "rl" if you want to do it all proper like. That's the hardest bit.

As for your name, what about seven, just to annoy fictional characters?

Amaterasu: Japanese sun goddess from whom all the emperors are supposedly descended, and hence the divinity of the royal family. They gave that up a while back (I think when Japan lost WWII). [/history geek]

Good name. I second this one :)

Well, nice to have a bit of backgroung on it, I suppose.

Way to steal my 'I'm going to change my name' idea! You find me one, I'll find you one :P

Well, it could be worse. You could be called Serena or some variation *snerk* On the same hand, you could be called Serenity. And while it does have about fifty thousand Mary Sues to its name (aha! pun!), it also has that Firefly connotation that everybody* wants.

*I say everybody, but I haven't actually seen any yet. I've just been told by numerous people that I would like it, so...you know.

I am sure it will be glorious and magnificent.

Is it David Tennant? I just watched the first episode of Blackpool...guuuuuuh. Guuuuh. And from what I hear, it keeps getting better.

Guuuuuh!

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

I...had no idea you were going to do that too. Obviously my amazing psychic powers are getting ahead of me.

And Serenity wouldbe cool. And you haven't actually seen it yet? Watch it. Watch it now.

Sadly, the place I am staying has no TV, so I have not yet seen the glory that is the Tennant in Blackpool.

Obviously, the DVD is on my "To buy" list.

Umm, that's a guys name. Don't you think Zion Anakin would be more appropriate? It's a female name, AND you can reference two sci-fi series at once!

I think I can see a slight theme in some of those names.

From: [identity profile] chocolatepot.livejournal.com

Well, let's see. I can tell you from experience that Flora, June or Cassandra are not the way to go ... well, actually, Cassandra's all right. It's very elegant, and it has connotations of angst. I like it.

Oh, this could get downright evil, couldn't it? I mean, a person could get nasty and go so much further than merely clod-ish sort of names like Mabel.

Hmmm...

How about Lucinda. It puts one in mind of insane wealthy women who poison their adversaries.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

That automatically makes me think of Bernard Black, from Black Books.

Which is an odd comparison, really.

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Interesting. The most popular names are Jossica and Amaterasu.

Says a lot about my flist, really.

You can't just ask for a name, good names are bestowed accidentally by fate and slips of meaning.

Lucien.

I'm surprised no-one has suggested Kaylee
