drakyndra: The Music Meister demands you sing! (Watchmen: Pretty Awesome)
( Aug. 6th, 2011 11:42 pm)
Should have posted earlier, but I got distracted by things. Whoops.

Anyway, placement started back up again yesterday - though, since I am at the same place as last semester, there was nothing too drastically changed now. (Time-tables are mildly different, though) I do have to adjust to the early mornings, mind, what with having arranged my lectures to prevent that sort of silliness this time around.

Plus planning for my lessons in the block. Any ideas for creative writing folio tasks for Year 8, or Macbeth for Year 11?

And then in the evening I went to FAS's Sugar Ball at Uni, because everyone could use some good old fashioned party games and tubes of sherbet. And people dressed up as all sorts of things (Sadly, having come from placement I was unable to be costumified).

It finished with stomping on balloons!

Oh, and an amusing quote from a tute I was at earlier in the week: "Can girls be wizards, or is it a male dominated industry?"

I also seem to have somehow once more gained a backlog of things to link to. No idea how that happened.

- If Famous Thinkers quoted Herald Sun readers. Oh, the contrast.
- A piece of Harry Potter fanart which I am rather fond of. It's a clever parallel they make there.
- Book reviews demystified. So you can understand what people really mean when they call a book "ambitious" or "fully realized".
- A Mariachi Band serenades a Beluga whale. The whale decides to groove along.
- Live Action Pokemon Trailer. Yes, it's a fan-film, but damn. Oh man, grim and gritty Pokemon.
- Bollywood Dancing to the NyanCat music. It's actually sort of scary how well that works.
- When Harry Potter spells are pronounced wrong... As animated by some guy who works for Dreamworks, which is just plain nifty. It also has a Making Of video.
- HELL TETRIS. It's like playing Tetris, but incredibly painful. (Yes, it is a flash game inspired by an xkcd comic)
- Build your own Solar System. Yes, you too can now play God! And it is fun. (Even when your planets crash into the sun. Or especially when your planets crash into the sun.)

I have actually on occasion gotten my planets to develop life. Once I even managed two planets that did And then one of them crashed into the sun.

In other news, I have decided I wish to read a fanfic crossing over Dresden Files and the Chrestomanci Chronicles. That is all.
This is what happens when I have to go without LJ for a while: I build up a backlog of random things I have found on the internet for the purpose of killing time. *sigh*

Enjoy the fruits of your DDOS induced downage, LJ.

- Myths Retold. I saw this described as "A ff.net badfic author rewriting fairytales and classic myths", but I think it's closer to a drunk teenager trying to explain the plot of movies, also seen while drunk.
- Homolust challenge generator. It's like "Together, THEY FIGHT CRIME", only instead of fight crime, they have gay sex. Hey, if you need ideas for weird yaoi AUs.
Plus it occasional provides weirdly close to canon ideas. A criminal is fucked by a innocent terrorist leader in a park. They are star-crossed lovers. It must involve celibacy and masochism. Uh huh...
- If Harry Potter was an anime. Fanart which I know some of you guys have seen already, but remains nifty (and reminds me of my wish that HP had been adapated as a multi-series animated show. You know it could have been cool.)
- Ooh Mister Ikuhara! Some commentary on Penguindrum, in Kate Beaton form.
- Cat Versus Human. A webcomic about being a cat lady. I miss having cats.
- Queen Mother Adventures. Another webcomic, this time about the Queen Mum. Go back to the start for all the gin and corgi related crack.
- Those news animators from Taiwan made their own Dark Knight Rises trailer. With all the gratuitous Nolan film references you could ever want.
- New OK GO video! This one has kaleidoscope dancing, which is rather trippy. And if you have Chrome, you can make interactive messages with it (...It'll make sense when you see the video).
- An Impression doing Shakespeare in the style of assorted celebrities. I think Simon Cowell made me laugh the most.
- An Orchestral version of NyanCat. To borrow one of the YouTube comments, it's like the Internet's national anthem.

Oh, and Pottermore will be, for the next week, taking sign-ups for their beta. Guess who has already registered? :D:D

Though they don't allow you to pick your own usernames for security reasons, so you have to take one from a list they provide. MidnightRook15, anyone? LOL at the chess theme.
So, today I went in with [livejournal.com profile] notalwaysweak and a few other people (most of whom I didn't know) to go see the last Harry Potter movie.

Yes, I know, it's been out for almost a week and I hadn't seen it already. Call myself a Potter-fan indeed.

Ah well. I still cried.

Spoilers for the movie, since I am pretty sure everyone knows about the book by now )

...And now I feel like reading Potter fanfic again. Any recent things out there to recommend? I prefer gen or canon ships, mostly, and something with plot or world-building would be fun.

In other news, you can now see an official (non-camera phone) version of the teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises.
And I have discovered that Utena caps and Texts From Last Night make a disturbingly fitting combination.
The guy who served me at the supermarket today really needed to pay more attention to the part of his training where they explain how to stack bags. WHY YOU PUT CANS OF THINGS ON TOP OF MY SQUISHABLE VEGETABLES?

>:(

Anyhoo, Mum was down in Melbourne last night for a (late) birthday dinner with The Sister and I, plus getting to see us prior to her grand round-the-world jaunt which is due to begin... later this upcoming week, I believe. We had Nepalese food for dinner, which was a bit different, and then went to Brunetti's for coffee and cake. Ah, the wonders of Lygon Street.

And then today I... didn't do a lot. Watched the first two episodes of Mawaru Penguindrum which was certainly something - well, a certain about of mindfuck is expected, it is by the guy who directed Utena. Hence why I am watching I suppose.

Otherwise, I am yet to see Harry Potter and so will have to live vicariously through everyone else's reviews - though I will be going to see it with [livejournal.com profile] notalwaysweak and others on Tuesday. I'll just have to hold out until then, I suppose.

Though there is some entertaining Potter stuff floating around online. Such as these lulzy macro-y things, or these rather awesome posters.
Hey, [livejournal.com profile] midnitemaraud_r gave me a kiss! No, really, you can see it on my profile.

...I really must update that profile. That's like two years old now.

I also seem to have some socialising to do tomorrow, since certain people seem to be back from overseas trips. Oh, an overseas holiday would be nice about now.

And from the country that brought you FMA themed snacks, you can now see Evangelion putting a whole new meaning into Angel Cake.

Is it wrong that I would so eat that?
So, last night I didn't get enough sleep, and today I ended up watching through End of Evangelion.

Boy, I bet I'm in for some interesting dreams tonight.

Asuka is still my favourite, and Gainax is so on the good drugs.
drakyndra: The Music Meister demands you sing! (Death Note: Smirky Light)
( Apr. 17th, 2011 11:20 pm)
Look, sir, memes! It's got me posting again, anyhow.

I got this from [livejournal.com profile] yinake who so kindly roped me into this thing, bless.

The rules, if anyone else wants to play:
1) Comment to this and I will give you 3 (fictional) people. ** Male and/or female, if you are so inclined. Just say so.
2) Post this meme to your LJ with your answers. **Feel free to answer in the comments here if you like.
3) Provide pictures/text descriptions and the names of the 3 people.
4) Label whom you would shag, marry and (push off a) cliff.

I'd also say, if we are less familiar, give me some fandoms to pick from, so I don't pick anyone you don't know.

Anyway, Yina gave me Spike, Light and Suzaku. Because we apparently have the same taste in men.

Have some pictures with your meme )

Memes. Boo-yeah
So, busy weekend. Well, busy yesterday, and today had lots of sleeping in, getting grumpy at LJ and doing some of my assignment.

But yeah, Supanova was on and I headed in as planned on Saturday, complete with dressing-upness. Which isn't exactly cosplay, but hey it's an excuse to dress up nifty and a few people wanted pictures so I suppose it counts.

Anyway, the queue to get into the building was completely insane. I was kinda amazed at how long it was. On the other hand, I arrived early enough that it wasn't all that busy inside, and even more fortunately the queue for the anime signings was almost non-existent, which was great for me. So, I went and got a free Evangelion: Rebuild poster and got it signed by Tiffany Grant and Yuko Miyamura aka English!Asuka and Japanese!Asuka. I also got a picture with Tiffany Grant - I wanted one with both, but apparently Yuko Miyamura isn't allowed to get photos taken.

I can't be arsed trying to upload my pic to LJ with things like they are, but it's on my computer and I could link it if anyone is desperate to see.

I also went to the panel with the two of them, which was surprisingly not full given it's, you know, Evangelion. Though, given how long the autograph line was in the afternoon, maybe everyone just showed up late.(I confess to laughing at how long the wait was after I was lined up for only like 15 minutes) But there were some interesting questions and then some... kinda dumb ones. Hopefully mine was a good one.

I didn't really go in for any other autographs (well, except some other anime guys who showed up) because some of the lines were insane. I heard someone was in line for Tom Felton almost all day.

I did stick around for the cosplay competition though. Not long enough to find out who won, but long enough to see all the costumes and performers, some of which were a lot of fun. The Draco Malfoy act was clearly inspired by A Very Potter Musical, but was still kinda hilarious.

And yeah, the regular convention wandering around, looking at people's costumes, looking at stalls and buying things. And eating overpriced convention food. Plus some guy from the 501st gave me some "Join the Dark Side" cookies.

The only person I knew who I actually ended up running into was [livejournal.com profile] connikins who was unsurprisingly Inception-ed up, though I know a few others were around.

I ended up getting the first Rebuild movie on DVD, a box set of Eden of the East since it sounded interesting, an R2-D2 Pez dispenser and a badge. As one does.

And then I headed into down for dinner with my father and my sister, while still in my convention outfit. Well, I hadn't had time to get home and get changed (and I'd spent half the day worrying about getting there on time since my phone battery almost ended up dying on me), which I am sure looked wonderful after all that rain.
So, I spent most of the weekend working on an assignment that is due in tomorrow. And now it's done, hooray! (Okay, so I still need to finish off the appendix. That won't take long).

Which has meant I spent a long and rather boring past few days. Excluding the bit last night where I went out to dinner with a bunch of people for [livejournal.com profile] neo_leviathan's birthday. So very much food at the dumpling place.

So instead I come today bringing YouTube videos. Which I didn't, in fact, use to procrastinate with.

- So you know that Friday song that's become rather memetic with it's, um, hilarious lack of being good? I was highly amused by this cover of it.

- Cats with Thumbs! Be afraid, be very afraid.

- A... rather interesting multifandom AMV about anime and yaoi. I don't even know like half the characters there, and I was still amused.
So, I just spent the past couple of days watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, because I've been meaning to get round to it forever.

And now I rather think I see where that show got it's reputation from.

To borrow something I said to one of my housemates last night, "So 18 episode in, it suddenly becomes a horror series."

And then there's the ending, which basically had me sitting there going "What" for about an hour.

But thought provoking. And now I possibly feel the need for something rather more cheery as a palate cleanser. The music is still stuck in my head. :/

Also, I am tired because I didn't get any sleep last night. No, these events are not actually related.

In more cheerful news, how about the cat that lives up a tree?

And we have we have a release date and summary for the next Discworld book, which is always good news.

...I've got a surprising amount of books I'm looking forward to coming out this year.
Okay, I knew the Queensland floods were bad, but I hadn't really realised just how bad they were. This video popped up on my flist today, and egads:

That's a whole lotta water. (And to make it sound ever worse, the description being thrown around for the scale of things is that the flooded area "is the size of France and Germany combined".)

I hope everyone out there is okay.

And some more frivolous stuff to lighten the mood:

- Will It Blend? Featuring Old Spice. And the Old Spice Guy - well, sort of.
- A Ghostbusters/Inception trailer mashup. Okay, that's just plain amusing.
- A piece Doctor Who/Sailor Moon crossover fanart. Quite possibly the greatest piece of fanart ever.
- There is already a Tron:Legacy porn parody movie in the works. It's title? Pron. Naturally.
And I am back! Not that really went all that far. And, you know, still had internet access and all that.

But I am back at the iPartment and things are operating more normally for now. For a value of normal that occurs between Christmas and New Years' anyway.

But I spent Christmas in that bastion of excitement, Hamilton, with Mum and The Sister. Headed down on the train on Christmas Eve, had Christmas lunch at Mum's, had a brief jaunt down to Warrnambool on Boxing Day, and otherwise just hung around for a bit, got depressed by the cricket, and wrestled with Sudoku.

I also discovered that the only actual restaurant that was open in Hamilton yesterday had nothing vegetarian on it's menu. Seriously, what was with that?

Presents included Dalek bubble-bath from my sister, to my great amusement. Plus also chocolate and a gift voucher from her. And a DVD of The Aristocats, which we used to love when we were kids.

Mum got me another Pandora charm for my bracelet, a red shoulder bag, an electronic sudoku game thing, and more chocolate. And there was that check I got from Dad last week.

And then today we came back to Melbourne, which means today has been spent catching up on my Internetting, and watching the last episode of Panty and Stocking, to which I have to say that Gainax truly are the kings of trolling. Ho boy.
Had a vaguely sociable weekend this one just passed. On Saturday night I went with a bunch of friends to go see Tron: Legacy at the movies. Which actually made for quite an enjoyable experience, even if I'd never actually seen the original movie at all.

I mean, yeah, the plot was a bit average and all, but it looked and sounded really cool, and was fun, and really what more could one want. Yes, something of a triumph of style over substance, but I like me some style.

I didn't see it in 3D though, since that gives of the guys I was with a headache. But I hear the 3D is actually supposed to be good for the film, so maybe if anyone else has plans to go see, I might tag along.

And one spoilery comment )

What else... saw this week's episode of Panty and Stocking, which was very... Panty and Stocking. If unexpectedly actually dramatic, cliff-hanger and all (Though this means I am left with the frustrating knowledge that the last episode comes out when I will be at my mother's place. I somehow doubt I will be watching it on her computer...)

Oh, and there's dinner with my father tomorrow night, before he flies back over to Thailand.

And I think I need a hair cut.
Oh busy day today.

Had a job interview this morning - it was group interview, too, which was interesting. (As in, actually sincerely interesting). We were asked to call back tomorrow afternoon to find out if they want us to come in for actual training, so I should know about that pretty soon. It's only a casual position, though, so if I do find something more full-time, it'll be ditched. But oh well.

Next up: 9am Friday interview. *sigh* Oh, and I've got another interview also being organised, but no time and date worked out, though I'm hoping I can wangle it to be Friday afternoon some time. It'd just make things easier that way.

Apart from that, today I finally got around to seeing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part One). Huzzah for Cinema Nova's $6 tickets.

To paraphrase something I said elsewhere, I think the real benefit of having cut the book in half for this is that it allowed the movie to have both the plot important stuff and emotional character moments with compromising or rushing either, the way some of the other movies have. It didn't feel like it was nearly as long a movie as it actually was. And there was some definite pretties though.

It's been a while since I read the book - probably for the best, since I'd most likely nitpick the film more if it was fresh - but while there were some scenes I wish they hadn't cut and some additions I didn't entire buy, it mostly worked out well for me. And there were some scenes that I am pretty certain were line for line of book dialogue, which I found oddly pleasing.

Slightly more spoilery stuff )

So, back again in six months, I suppose.

Oh, and I got the new Jasper Fforde book. It's a Young Adult book, so I'm already two-thirds of the way through it, but it's fun so far. Lighter on the puns and literary allusions and more obvious on the subtext, but still very, very Jasper Fforde. I'm not entirely sure if the main character really convinces me she's almost 16, though.

And your random YouTube videos for the day:
- A kitten riding a tortoise. Come on, say dawwww!
- EVERY ANIME OPENING EVER MADE. Okay, not literally true, but there is such a point there.
So, I was making soup for dinner today and I went to see if we had any onions in our fridge. Since, you know, I was thinking I could use some onion in my soup.

And I found an onion. It was growing. In our fridge.

I don't think that's actually supposed to happen.

Other excitement of today included job applications. Which doesn't really qualify as excitement. Though one place did ask that I call back tomorrow...

Oh, and in order to recover from these exciting shenanigans I spent the last couple of hours watching anime. Technically, the next thing on my To Watch list is Neon Genesis Evangelion, but I rather felt in the mood for something... a bit lighter and more silly.

So I ended up watching all the episodes so far of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt.

All I have to say is this: My God it's full of crack!.

Great music, though.

And here, have a link to three yakuza reviewing a video game about yakuza.
So, I went to Armageddon today. It was, as expected REALLY FREAKING COLD out, which a bit of last minute clothes shuffling. (Sorry miniskirts, I don't think I could deal with that today even with colourful tights.)

Ended up with an ankle-length black skirt, black top with billowy lace sleeves and my gothic lolita hat. And white boots, because what the hell? End result with jewellery and sparkly make-up ended up looking kind of goth, actually. And vaguely Victorian - enough that a couple of guys running a stall decided that I must be a steampunk fan and tried to point me in the direction of the books they were selling with much flattery of my taste.

Or they were just trying to hit on me. Not entirely sure.

I ended up going to the panel with Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann and Sophie Aldred, which was actually quite funny. I think the technical difficulties added a distinct note of fun to the proceedings. I also watched the cosplay contest, and actually watched the entire first two episodes of the FMA:B English Dub for the first time. Which was... interesting, having watched the whole thing in subs.

Got an autograph from Vic Mignogna (who also complimented my outfit, and when asked said he'd dubbed up to episode 58), and I wanted to get John DiMaggio's but kind of that failed miserably.

I mean, I showed up too late for the morning session, which was fine - line was long, he had other stuff to do - I said I'd come back after lunch. And then when I showed up, the lady there was refusing to let anyone else line up before he'd even started doing autographs. And then said to come back in an hour. Which I did, and was still told to come back later. So I did, and was told there were no more autographs allowed, despite the fact there was nothing else on.

I think this would have all been less frustrating if she hadn't decided that no-one else could join the line just as I tried to join the end of it. Seriously.

I also had a near-miss with [livejournal.com profile] lizbee - I hadn't realised she was actually there until late in the day, and when I did, I sent a message asking where she was. I was in a queue at the time, so I couldn't rush off, but when I finally did head in her direction - I got a message saying she had just left. Literally, two minutes ago.

That one was more disappointing than aggravating, though.

Otherwise, there were a lot of nifty cosplayers around, but I was too lazy to take pictures. Lots of Doctor Who types, including a Jack with a hand in a jar to my amusement. Slightly less heavy on the anime-types (or at least animes I knew), though I sort of pitied the Yoko I saw in the (lack-of) heat. I saw some Insurance Girls from Trigun, which was nice - I normally I only see Vash and Wolfwood cosplayers around. And so on and so forth. Had a few people take pictures of me, and I shall once more wonder if any of them will ever actually find there way online.

Didn't actually buy much - an FMA stopwatch (sadly, it was first anime, so the year on the "Don't Forget" was off, but I'll live), some interestingly flavoured licorice, and a wooden sword because why not buy a wooden sword. It wasn't hugely expensive.

And that was my day. I can't say it was really up there with my best convention experiences, but that's the way these things go. And it was entertainment for a day.
So, last night I finally got around to seeing Inception. Yes, I know that this makes me about the slowest person ever. On the other hand, I still haven't seen Avatar, so who knows.

And so, yes, I now see what all the fannish flailing over the past few weeks has been about - well, some of it anyhow. I think I'm more interested in the mindfuckery than the shipping, really.

But it was very interesting in the way that means I'll want to go see it again - not because I wasn't sure what was going on, because I (mostly) got that. I just want to pay attention to stuff I missed the first time round. Or was distracted by people talking in the row behind me. *grumble*

Otherwise - effects were great, especially the dreamscape stuff (and that fun gravity flippery). I liked the entire team, though I wish some had a bit more backstory/character stuff. But I think Saito was my favourite. I have no idea why. And the music is ridiculously catchy.

Also, my one spoilery comment: Cut for politeness )

Yo, [livejournal.com profile] connikins, I know you are all about Inception fandom at the moment. Recommend me some communities/meta/discussion/fic/whatever. Other people are also welcome to drop in recommendations. Or just talk about the movie.

I also have a strange desire to read an Inception/Cowboy Bebop crossover.
So, Manifest provide a decent bit of entertainment for the day. Even if I ended up really fucking freezing on the way home, egads.

Anyway, I was dressed as a sort-of Misa ("Sort-of" meaning I need a wig, but it was otherwise pretty complete). Spent most of the day wandering around, checking out the merchandise tables, looking at all the costumes and taking pictures of a few (and of other randomly interesting things. Like the mecha made of pocky boxes). And actually attending a few things.

On the way in, some guy on the tram asked if the races were on today. Kind of understandable, since he was right behind me, and I think my hat was basically shoved in his face because of crowded tram.

Met up with Amelia (Sister's housemate) and hung out with her for a bit, when we saw the cosplay and later at Little Kuriboh's panel. Which was pretty damn funny. We got the expected Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged Q&A and quotes and stuff, a preview of the next episode coming up (...I am so behind on watching Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged), and then all sorts of random silliness from the crowd. Including Little Kuriboh - who spent the day cosplaying as Naruto - "making out" with a Sasuke cosplayer.

Oh, and Little Kuriboh signed my death note. As one does. (He gave himself "death by cosplayers")

(Amelia, on the other hand, seemed to be unwittingly taking part in my haunting by David Bowie. Gave me a distinct moment of LOL WOT there.)

I also met Geoff when I went to see the AMV Iron Chef. Mildly disappointed I couldn't see the main AMV competition, because I love me some good AMVs, but that was the other day, along with a few other things I wanted to see, so thems the breaks.

Apart from the that, I bought a few small things - couple of phone charms, some little jewellery things, that sort of junk - as well as the Gurren Lagann box set. Because I feel kind of bad for loving the show like I do and not, you know, having paid for it or anything.

And that was my day.

Couple of amusing comments - or at least comments that amused me:

"Now, where did I put my death note..." - Me, when I was getting ready in the morning.

"Apparently the election was a draw." - Overheard at Manifest. Also, probably technically true (Are we going to find out who's Prime Minister any time soon?), but it struck me as amusing wording.
That ended up being surprisingly interesting for a day in which I was just expected to go into the city and then back home after lunch.

Anyways, someone on [livejournal.com profile] melbournemaniac was selling a whole bunch of manga second-hand very cheap, so I went and bought some stuff. Which meant I ended up going into the CBD to pick up a pile of volumes of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Yays for pretty CLAMP art!

Of course on the way in it was really freaking windy- when I was crossing the road, my poor hat got blown off and almost got run over. Fortunately the car stopped before that unmitigated tragedy could occur. I mean, that was the original hat. Luck was obviously on my side today.

But yeah, picked up my bag o'manga, had Hare Krishna food for lunch (Speaking of which, I have to wonder just how old I actually look. No-one ever asks for ID when I buy drinks, but people still assume I am a student just by looking at me.), bought a few bits and pieces that I missed the other day when things closed.

Oh, and got a couple of cheap summer dresses from the Designer Incubator. I figure I'll probably need them over in the states with their heat-wave or whatever.

And then I got a haircut. Which I probably didn't desperately need just yet, but I think I want my hair to look nice when I'm travelling

And now I am tired. How can just wandering around the city buying things be so tiring?

Here, have some Doctor Who wank as a refreshing treat.

Incidentally, does anyone remember an article a while back - not on LJ, but linked to me from LJ (maybe Firefox News?) - that was all about how two people can watch the same show but be seeing, basically, two entirely different shows? Something like that, anyway. It's not for anything serious, I just kind of want to reread it, and maybe keep the link handy.
So, despite a distinct lack of response to my post about it, and went and saw Toy Story Three last night. It was very good, and I cried like a baby through, like, the last half.

Though egads, ticket prices get expensive. And now I sound like one of those people complaining about the good ol' days when everything was cheap. Though you used to be able to see movies at the Hamilton Cinema for five dollars. The selection was crap, but it was cheap.

On the down side, on the way home I lost one of my earrings. And it was one of my nice red dangly ones, too. I like those earrings!

Apart from that, I've been... watching other stuff. New Futurama, subs of the most recent FMA:B episode, the second season of Full Metal Panic. Well, it's bloody cold out at the moments, and I'd rather stay in my room, where I can put the heater on and keep warm.

Oh, and I got back my last SSRM assignment - that one I was working on when you computer was being stupid. Got a H2A for it. Since it was worth 50 percent of the subject mark, and for the 25 percent assignments I got a H2A and a H2B, I'm now extrapolating that my final mark is a H2something.

And I have an appointment at the doctor's tomorrow. (Nothing's actually wrong, just more delightful needle jabbings for me.)
