drakyndra: The Music Meister demands you sing! (FMA: Al All Grown Up)
( Jul. 6th, 2010 10:48 pm)
So howdy there to all the new people who have added me from the [livejournal.com profile] fm_alchemist friending meme!

Drop me a line here to introduce yourself properly - because while friending memes might give you an outline of what people might be interested in, the don't always give the best idea as to who people actually are.

So: Introduce yourself, tl;dr about your favourite things, link me to introductory posts or profiles, ~theorise~ about what this new FMA movie will be, ask me questions about me, or just generally get some proper conversation going now that it's not actually the middle of the night in local time.

(Also, great excuse to show off new end of FMA icons. No, I'm not being gratuitous here at all *looks shifty*)
I so should have not made those Life On Mars jokes the other day. I've been getting Bowie songs stuck in my head ever since.

Admittedly, all the pre-finale discussion at [livejournal.com profile] a2ashes hasn't been helping much.

...And I've somehow gotten into a discussion on Facebook about David Bowie's tight, tight pants. (Why do I not have a Jareth icon? *sigh*)

It even got brought up during my SSRM tute today, although I admit that class has a history of WTFery. And what with the long discussion on studying people who play video games, it's not like today was much different than usual.

We did get this wonderful quote out of it: "Let's operationalise lameness!"

And students making Your Mum jokes at the tutor.

Quick, someone get something else stuck in my head!
So, Iron Man 2 last night. Really pretty fun, though not as good as the first one. It certainly had it's moments, though.

...And no-one much will able to talk about this until the end of the week because of us getting an early release for once. Huh.

But dinner and the movie with friends were a perfectly acceptable waste of an evening. Even if I was mildly disappointed in the absence of veggie dumplings at the place we went to. I HAZ A CRAVING.

And now The New Housemate is watching his new Avatar DVD in the living room. I suspect its ~*~revolutionary special effects~*~ will be somewhat less dramatic on our little TV.
You know what's a vaguely creepy experience? Being the only person on a tram. (Well, the only person other than the driver). 'Twas a bit weird this afternoon. Fortunately it didn't last all that long.

Something else which is also kind of creepy: random text messages about funerals. RIP Frank, whoever you may have been. (Yeah, I think that one was a wrong number).

In less creepy news, I am trying to decide if I should buy this jacket or not. It is interestingly weird, as all my favourite clothes are, and the one I tried on fits.

Oh, and news about a new animated Code Geass project finally leaked with that DVD. New lead, new location, set circa the first season? I can live with that. Though I kinda want someone to upload the new picture drama already

And that is your brief update from me. Unless you feel like joining the masses and talking about the Icelandic volcano (or Carl Williams if you are in Melbourne). Or the current and quite hilarious Bleach wank.

I'm not sure why Bleach wank amuses me so, given I haven't even seen/read the canon, let alone been in the fandom. Or maybe that's exactly why I find it so hilarious.

So, that was fun. Not the most fun I have ever had - I really need to get to more cons with fan-run discussion panels, instead of just Q&As with celebs. Or at least with more celebs I really care about. And I need to find some people I know to attend these things with me, for added lulz factor. Also, it was bloody hot in the building.

But yeah, it was a decent waste of a day.

Saw the cosplay contest (at least until it was almost over and everyone was starting to trail off boredly), saw Yuri Lowenthal's panel, was going to go to Gareth David-Lloyd's one, but decided I couldn't be bothered waiting for the crowd.

Wandered around looking at the non-competition cosplayers. There were the usual suspects in terms of who they dressed as, some utterly cracktastic ones, some amusingly bad ones - I'm looking at you, cardboard box gundams - and some really good ones, even outside the contest. There was a rather decent Suzaku wandering around, and half-way through the day he ended up changing outfits, from Knight of Seven to Knight of Zero. I have a picture of him, I think. Bless, his mum made the costume.)

And of course looking at all the stalls and merchandise and whatnot. I got some manga I've read but didn't own (including the last volume of Hellsing); second season of Black Lagoon, since I'd given up on JB Hi-Fi ever getting it in (Naturally, the contacted me a couple of hours later to say it had arrived); a Death Note (...what?); a spiffy white blouse from the gothic lolita shop; and a keyring that smells like cake. Really.

Oh, and there were also the signings. Cue evil laugh.

Anyway, Yuri Lowenthal is a lovely, lovely man and I have decided I won't hear a word against him. Not only did he sign my Code Geass boxset and have a picture with me, but when I asked him to say something for me to record, not only did he say what [livejournal.com profile] robotloveI suggested, no problems, but when I showed him the picture it was from, he asked for another take so he could make it sound, and I quote, "more passionate."

Oh yeah.

I uploaded to YouTube and everything )

...Yes, that is in all likelihood the most shamelessly fangirly thing I have ever done. I regret nothing!

Now who's going to record Johnny Yong Bosch saying Lelouch's part?
So, on the subject of Facebook friendage, The Sister's boyfriend has also now decided to add me. I'm not sure what exactly what this signifies in the greater scheme of things, but hey! Maybe now I'll actually remember his last name.

Also, many thankies to [livejournal.com profile] robotlove for the LJ gift of... a sugary bunny. I'm not entirely sure why you decided to give this to me, but hey, sugary bunny!

I could totally go sugary bunny IRL, actually. How much longer until the post-Easter sales anyway? Do I have to resort to eating sugar cubes again?

...Yeah, this wasn't a gratuitous icon post at all.
So, it's been a week since I last posted here. Whoops.

In compensation, my dear flist, you get... a whole lot of randomness. Because a little randomosity is good for the soul.

- Over at Fandom_Wank, the Snapefen are at it again.
They've also been all over the_hms_stfu lately. Making a bid to take over the role of resident crazypants section of HP fandom from the Harmonians, perhaps?
- On a more positive HP note, awesomesauce insightful fanfic on the female characters in Harry Potter.

Back to RL, and SSRM tutes are continuing in the gloriously cracktastic tradition.

Last week we somehow ended up on the topic of writing haikus about "being one with the train". And this week were talking about/practicing interview techniques. And somehow we ended up re-enacting a focus group for cult escapees. With a running theme of goats, a mention of Focus Group Survivor, and these lovely quotes:

- "What hair styling products did you use as a cult leader?"
- "Why do we always talk about bestiality in this subject?"

Ah, bless you cracktastic tutes.

And an non-tute related amusing quote, from a little while back:

Allen: "You know what's hilarious? So, I was translating Lady Gaga into Latin..."

...The Sister's graduation is this weekend. This is weird to think about.
Well, yesterday was interesting. I went to [livejournal.com profile] connikins' Unbirthday Picnic - which meant copious amounts of tea, hats and vaguely Victorian outfits. (Yes, it was Alice in Wonderland themed).

Said picnic, incidentally, was held in front of Melbourne Museum, under that shelter thing. So all the people walking past (or to IMAX) saw us.

But it was fun! I saw some people I knew, and quite a few I didn't. I got to try all sorts of interesting home-made foods people brought. OM NOM NOM MOLASSES COOKIES. And have some intersting conversations - about, among other things, Lovecraft. And also really bad movies.

Oh, and at one point we got asked to pose in the background of someone's wedding photos. Which I suppose will make for some memorable wedding photos (Though it'll be fun when someone else looks at them and asks why they have a photo with a bunch of people in crazy hats).

And we managed to clear out of there before it started raining again. Though I was glad I brought my umbrella.

As for the Alice in Wonderland movie itself, well it was very pretty, but I honestly think the picnic was more fun overall. It was rather predictable in terms of plot - and if there was anything the original books were not, it was predictable. It was also very Tim Burton, for all that entails both good and bad.

The Cheshire Cat was the best thing in it. Yay for Stephen Fry's voice!

In other news, I was informed today that one of my cousins in the US has just gotten engaged! So congratulations to her. I can has trip the USA for the wedding, pls?

You know, soon I will run out of cousins to actually get married. Huh.
Pffff, what are you doing, Melbourne Weather? Storms and flooding the streets again, this time with ginormous hailstones?

The photos at [livejournal.com profile] melbournemaniac are crazy, and apparently someone died.

I'm trying to decide if it's worth getting rained on and risking the potential lack of tram back in order to do my grocery shopping. 'Cos I'm kinda running low on food, here. And I need to get something to bring for [livejournal.com profile] connikins' thing tomorrow.

Which I should still be attending, fortunately.

Otherwise, yesterday I went and did some vitally important shopping. Which is actually true in this case, since I was finding a dress for my cousin's wedding next weekend.

I'm sure Connie can guess where I ended up getting one from. ;)
It was this dress, in case you are wondering. Now I need some black shoes to go with it.

Oh, and I also picked up a couple of books to read which may come in handy if the power dies. Or if I need more public transport reading.

And now I must ponder if I shall brave the weather.

In conclusion, OK GO make the bestest music videos ever.
You know, when you have two classes directly after one another, there should be some sort of rule of against scheduling them on opposite sides of the campus.

Though, the fact that my first class of the morning was right near somewhere that makes pretty good coffee almost makes up for it. Almost.

In other news, I am now Cthulu. FEAR ME, OH PUNY MORTALS.

...Yeah, ask Allen for an explanation of what one. I mean, I don't feel particularly tentacular or anything.

Also, today was Star Trek club. We watched Wrath of Khan, which was highly entertaining, though admittedly as much for the amusing commentary from the audience as anything in the film itself. (At one point we got on a tangent about how Khan was Lady Gaga. Really.)

You know, I'd forgotten how Uni seems to be make me excessively posty on LJ. Though it's more the clubs and social stuff than the classes themselves, actually.
Well, today was productive. Sort of.

In any case, I think I have my time-table for this semester sorted out - almost. (I say almost because I still need to wait for adjustments to be approved et al.)

Because, well, I didn't really like the idea of having six straight hours of class on Wednesday, without even a lunch break. But some highly sophisticated emailing may have things under wraps.

And hey, no classes on Thursdays or Fridays.

What else? Oh yes, tomorrow I am taking part in Vindaloo Against Violence. Because really, eating Indian food for a good cause sounds like my idea of an awesome social movement.

Most of the rest of what I've been up to has been far more... well, silly.

Including:

- Attempting not to get into edit wars on TV Tropes. And mostly succeeding. Go go self-restraint!

- Axe Cop! Truly the greatest webcomic in existance. Far more comics should be based on a 5 year olds ideas

- And randomly watching vids and AMVs, most of which are kind of ridiculous.
Some of my favourites (For a certain value of favourite) include:
these two Code Geass AMVs on NicoNico (Which, incidentally also has some of the most amazingly cracktastic brilliance I have ever seen floating around)
And Another Code Geass AMV, this one on YouTube. Also, hey Les Mis music for bonus tear-jerker points.
The most appropriate song choice for a Light Yagami AMV ever. Also on YouTube.
Way too many ice skating vids to mention. (The craziness of some ice skaters just... defies words. In a good way)

And now I need to watch the most recent FMA:B episode.
Ah, the wonders of Melbourne weather.

So we went from several 30+ degree days to... a thunderstorm. (Entertaining one, mind: I was sitting here watching the lightning when it sounded like it was right on top of me).

And a hell of a lot of rain, going by the CBD being flooded. And the people going swimming in Flinders Street, which can I just say ewww over. Epic points for disgusting, that.

...Yeah, it's not as exciting as the Snowpocalypse, or whatever the Americans are calling it, but you aren't the only ones having crazy-arse weather.

*sigh* Guess I'll be going into the city tomorrow, instead.
If you in need of something hilariously awesome, then look no further, for I have found a thing of wonderment: A (male) ice skater, performing a routine to... Poker Face.

There just really aren't any words for this sort of thing.

Link courtesy of Go Fug Yourself which is far too addictive for anyone's good.
There were Easter Eggs at the supermarket today.

Why were there Easter Eggs at the supermarket today?
FUCK YEAH NEW COMPUTER CHAIR! *\o/* Well, got for Christmas sort of new, anyway.

...SHUT UP, MY NEW COMPUTER CHAIR IS AWESOME! And you'd think so too, if you'd spent the last four years with an old chair you'd yoinked from a nature strip. (Look, it was free, and I am a Uni student. The logic there is obvious. I just had to put up with the fact that the stuffing of the seat was leaking, and it was no longer adjustable)

Look, it spins and goes up and down and I can roll around my room, and the back can be adjusted! It actually has a decent back...

Okay, I probably ought to cut back on the spinning, it's making me dizzy.

Anyway, last night I went to the tennis with Mum and The Sister. First match was Lleyton Hewitt versus Baghdatis, which started out with a set and a half of Hewitt trouncing Baghdatis, before Baghdatis retired due to injury. Which may explain said trouncing.

This was admittedly somewhat disappointing, given the two have something of a history of epic matches, but what can you do?

Next match was between two female players whom I had never heard of before. Which ended up rather more interesting than the first one, even if it was a straight sets victory, mainly because at least there were some decent rallies going on before people won.

Look at me, talking like I know shit about tennis...
Someone threw a boot at John Howard?

Why did no one tell me about this earlier? That's hilarious! Pity no-one got it on film (or that it was apparently a fairly bad throw).

...Let me have my petty amusements, okay?

Also, I have apparently filled up my iPod. (Well, pretty much. It's 80 gig and I have only 50MB space left, so...)

Which is rather impressive. And kind of scary. But hey, it means I have 16,126 songs which I can carry around with me to listen to whenever I please.

...Yeah, that's a lot of music.
BATZAKU!

This is why [livejournal.com profile] khallandra is my favourite. Gold star for you, BB! Thanks for the lulz!

...Very fitting for Halloween, doncha think? Kind of makes up for my complete absence of Halloween parties. There was, however, a rather appropriate lightning storm a few minutes ago. And on the way home from Interning yesterday, our tram went past a car that was randomly on fire. At 7 pm. In the middle of Melbourne.

What is less entertaining is the fact that, according to [livejournal.com profile] fa11ing_away, our washing machine is dying. Yeah, that really bites.
Well, that didn't go too badly at all. Didn't even end up with epic sleep failure like I expected, either.

But yes, there was a weekend! And I actually did things! I am astounded, too.

On Friday was [livejournal.com profile] fa11ing_away's thing. Which initially looked like it was going to be a washout, because of all the piking pikers, but people did eventually show up. Gradually, and mostly quite late, but hey. There was chatty funtimes and silly and pizza and alacamahols. I drank my blackberry vodka I got in Jordan! Um, all of it. Which may kind of explain why [livejournal.com profile] fa11ing_away cut me off at like 11.

Though I'm not sure anything can explain why she made me wear that pirate hat. Such is life.

But 'twas fun.

Then on Saturday, I went to Armageddon. Which was also fun, though I think I have been to better cons, even in my limited experience. The panels I went to were alright, though there weren't many I was interested in, and yet again I ran into That Person I Run Into At Conventions, which makes three for three conventions this year (Her name is Matty... I think. I hope it is, because she remembered my name) I caught up with [livejournal.com profile] connikins at the end of the day, and we hung out for a bit, and had something to eat over at Crown.

I ended up buying some comics and a few manga volumes (Utena and Detroit Metal City, to be precise, and yes I can see the contrast there). And a Dr Horrible DVD. And some cat ears, because they made me dawww. Considered buying some DVDs from Madman, but the ones that interested me were still a bit too expensive for my liking. Maybe I'll wait until JB Hi-Fi has a sale (or Anime shop of dubious legality gets some new stock)

As for the signings, I got Nicola Scott to sign the trade of Secret Six I just bought (She was fun, actually). Over at the animation signings, I got autographs from Laura Bailey aka Lust, and Travis Willingham aka Roy Mustang, who is very nice but spelt my name wrong. Incidentally, I chatted with them both about Brotherhood, and recording has started. Oh, and Travis has watched up to episode 19, and he is very much looking forward to recording that. Really. There was evil laughter involved.

Oh, and in what is becoming a convention tradition, I got photographed by some random dude, and I also got asked who I was cosplaying as. Which is slightly more justifiable than previous times, since I was wearing a kimono and a top hat.

...You know, one of these days, I am actually going to do what I have been tempted to, and claim that I am actually cosplaying as a character from some incredibly obscure (and completely fictional) anime no-one in Australia has heard of. Of course, that would entail having to come up with a name for it. And the character I am pretending to be. And possibly a plot if anyone asked.

Flist, you are totally welcome to help me invent a bullshit anime.

And today, there was the horror of having to go into Uni to complete our group assignment. Which actually went quite well (apart from the "going into Uni on Sunday morning" part of things). I basically just had to redo my work so I was citing things in footnotes rather than in text, and then help write the intro. And someone else is going to hand it in tomorrow, so that's that completed. Took less than two hours, even.

And that was my weekend. Onto reading that new Hitchhikers-Book-that-isn't-written-by-Douglas-Adams. Thus far, I don't hate it. It's not Douglas Adams, but I don't hate it. Any further opinions are pending.

So... hows about that new FMA:B episode? I hear Shit Went Down.
Aaand back to University I do go. *sigh* Or, I should say, went, since today was Radical Fiction again. And my (half-finished) piece was one of the pieces that we workshopped today.

Which meant argh, everyone went and read it and I had to read the first page out loud. Which is never fun. On the plus side, no-one had anything too dreadful to say about it. Which is hopefully means they thought it was pretty decent (as opposed to it appalling them to speechlessness).

But that was that.

Otherwise, Creative Writing decided it wanted to try and earn back it's Wednesday Weirdness reputation again, so aside from my workshopping we ended up descending into a pit of insanity on par with the vampire incident.

Only worse. Because our recurring topic of discussion was ...sperm.

Yes, really.

I don't think I have any words, really.

(This time was very definitely not my fault. Blame the person whose workshop piece started it all.)

And now for a dramatic subject change, because imagining my mothers face when she reads this is making me giggle.

Flist was right! The end of the last weeks FMA:B really was completely epic. It was sort of simultaneously awesome and tearjerkery. Oh Ed. Oh Al. ♥

Also: Whole lotta Xerxes flashbacks there. They really are foregrounding that particular bit of backstory. Which will be fun when a certain chapter gets animated. Manga spoilery bit )

And your mildly ridiculous fannish comparison for the day is:

Suzaku and Lelouch = Glinda and Elphaba. Discuss.

(This crazy though was brought to you via this Suzaku and Lelouch fanvid set to For Good from the Wicked musical. Which, if not the most technically spectacular fanvid I have ever come across, still managed to make me cry. I was having an emo moment, okay? And the song's kinda a tearjerker on it's own, anyway Since I know there's at least one person on my flist who hasn't finished Geass, the vid has spoilers to the end of R2)
