Was lurking around a few threads on the OG, when I stumbled upon a recent - and rather unexpected post from Teh Moff.
(From here)
In response to a previous commenter's "Writer Steven Moffat has all but admitted that The Doctor & Rose were sexually active as of the 'Doctor Dances' episode"
Teh Moff:
"I say, no I didn't! The whole scene was about the fact they WEREN'T at it - indeed, it was the Doctor being slightly hurt that Rose hadn't even considered him in that light.
There's precious little evidence they ever got up to anything, I'd have said - that it doesn't stop it being a love story, of course (it clearly was) but unrequited surely?
Oh, it's all sex with you lot, isn't it? And when the writer of Coupling says you're banging on about sex too much, it's time to start listening.
Steven Moffat"
Did mine eyes just decieve me, or was the word "unrequited" just used to describe the Doctor/Rose relationship by someone in the know?

Still, barring additional evidence to the contrary, I will insist to the day I die that there is ACRES of territory between Rusty and Julie's fairly simple "they are in love" statements and the OMGTrueLove/soulmate schlock of the batchippers.
Actually, I think the inability to conceive of "in love" possibly having any meaning OTHER than OMTrueLove/soulmae is pretty much the defining characteristic of batshippers in any fandom you care to name.

You do have a point there. There's a lot of layers of meaning the batchippers seem determined to strip out of things.

Oh, it totally is -- I happen to subscribe to it myself. It's just that, if I had to predict who among the writers would state it? He'd have been the one. :-)

How much is determination and how much is genuine inability to see otherwise is the eternal question, I think. It's like challenging someone's core religious or political convictions. Actually, I'm not so sure some batshippers don't hold onto the True Love of their chosen ship in place of religious or political convictions...

Point. ;)

It's easier to see what we want to see, yes, and people will go to huge amounta of effort to justify things so they fit into their world-view. And I think this is a case of, if you'll excuse me borrowing some of my HPS terminolgy, gestalt phenomena. Some people see the rabbit on the moon, and some see the man. And the way people's brains are wired, it's almost impossible to explain how it's a man to someone who sees a rabbit.
I should quit this train of thought before I start quoting bits of my textbook at you...

Especially since I've probably read some of them.
I finally found the rabbit about six months ago, four years after designing a costume for a Goa'uld version of the Maya moon goddess Ix Chel. I still have to concentrate. :-)
