Was lurking around a few threads on the OG, when I stumbled upon a recent - and rather unexpected post from Teh Moff.
(From here)
In response to a previous commenter's "Writer Steven Moffat has all but admitted that The Doctor & Rose were sexually active as of the 'Doctor Dances' episode"
Teh Moff:
"I say, no I didn't! The whole scene was about the fact they WEREN'T at it - indeed, it was the Doctor being slightly hurt that Rose hadn't even considered him in that light.
There's precious little evidence they ever got up to anything, I'd have said - that it doesn't stop it being a love story, of course (it clearly was) but unrequited surely?
Oh, it's all sex with you lot, isn't it? And when the writer of Coupling says you're banging on about sex too much, it's time to start listening.
Steven Moffat"
Did mine eyes just decieve me, or was the word "unrequited" just used to describe the Doctor/Rose relationship by someone in the know?

;)
Frankly, I don't care whether it was unrequited or that they shagged like bunnies from day one. I just want some of the shippers to shut up.
But yes, Moffat-love!

But Teh Moff, is Teh Bomb. And he got the Hugo, which is a thing of yayness. *is hoping he makes the double with GitF next year*

I've read RTD himself say something along these lines, I'm sure I have (though I believe the implication was it was unrequited from Nine's side. And I'm oddly fond of that idea, that Nine is in love with her but Ten isn't, and that Rose is in love with Ten but not Nine. It is very Gift of the magi, and also mathematically pleasing to me with all the numbers.)

That said, the slightly nasty irony of the Doctor that Rose loves not being the one that loves her appeals to me a lot. But then, as anyone who has seen the reasoning for why I like Doomsday could attest, I have a liking for slightly nasty ironies.

It is also very in keeping with what we saw onscreen. She didn't go all goopy over him until he was Ten, but Ten wasn't as insanely jealous of anyone she looked at like Nine was (even though he flirted with trees, the temporal tart!)

Because I must rebut ...
I AM LIKE A HARMONIAN. Only not, because I don't really care whether it turns out that Rose Was Special or that Rose Had A Fangirl's Love, because I like the ship and so on and on.

Still, barring additional evidence to the contrary, I will insist to the day I die that there is ACRES of territory between Rusty and Julie's fairly simple "they are in love" statements and the OMGTrueLove/soulmate schlock of the batchippers.
Actually, I think the inability to conceive of "in love" possibly having any meaning OTHER than OMTrueLove/soulmae is pretty much the defining characteristic of batshippers in any fandom you care to name.

Re: Because I must rebut ...
This was Moffat refuting the false quote, and then getting into the overall debate.
To borrow the Harmonian debate, being hurt that "Rose hadn't considered him in that light" was like Hermione getting pissy Harry considered her a girl. You don't need to be attracted to someone sexually to be offended if they think you haven't had sex, which is what Rose was implying about the Doctor. You don't need to like someone romantically to be offended if they think you don't like romance.

Though this is the guy who paired the Doctor with someone other than Rose, so I'm not sure if he's quite got the same viewpoint as the other writers.
And, yeah, that scene was the equivalent of Jo saying "he reminds me of a younger you", except that Nine wonders why she doesn't think of him that way, and quite rightly.
Hee, the anti-asexualist now reckons they're obsessed. *beam* Yay for irony.

You do have a point there. There's a lot of layers of meaning the batchippers seem determined to strip out of things.

I find it a bit... just because he thinks the Doctor isn't without sexual thought doesn't mean he thinks the Doctor is only about sexual thought.

Oh, it totally is -- I happen to subscribe to it myself. It's just that, if I had to predict who among the writers would state it? He'd have been the one. :-)

How much is determination and how much is genuine inability to see otherwise is the eternal question, I think. It's like challenging someone's core religious or political convictions. Actually, I'm not so sure some batshippers don't hold onto the True Love of their chosen ship in place of religious or political convictions...

That's true, but it still stikes me as funny because of the change in attitudes of the OGers in general.

Point. ;)

It's easier to see what we want to see, yes, and people will go to huge amounta of effort to justify things so they fit into their world-view. And I think this is a case of, if you'll excuse me borrowing some of my HPS terminolgy, gestalt phenomena. Some people see the rabbit on the moon, and some see the man. And the way people's brains are wired, it's almost impossible to explain how it's a man to someone who sees a rabbit.
I should quit this train of thought before I start quoting bits of my textbook at you...

Same here. It's interesting.
But yeah, it's a bit weird to see this sort of thing on the OG.

Well, yeah. The Doctor always loves his companions (which is one reason why the Adam thing irks me).
Something a lot of batshippers fail to realise: sex and love are not necessarily connected.
