I wonder, just how much of the crazy in the Doctor Who fandom would be avoided if people would actually come to terms with the fact that Rose isn't the exception, she's just the first example of the new rule?

Errrm, any reason why she shouldn't be mentioned in the opening creadits? And have I missed any wank about this?

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Nah, just an idiot on the OG claiming the only reason Billie was in the credis was because she was already well known, and because she was "the link to a new generation of fans." Or something.

Which one could interpret as saying that Billie Piper was stunt casting, which is an amusing implication.

If I had known about Billie Piper's career as a pop starlet before becoming interested in the new DW, I'd probably never have bothered with the show at all. Is this negative stunt casting then?

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Possibly. ;)

Want to know something that has amused me for a while? You know how certain places are always banging on about how X is stunt casting, or Y is stunt casting, and they can't act etc.

Well, in the entirety of the last two series of Doctor Who, I had only ever heard of one of the cast before I saw them in Who (and I'm including both the Doctors, who were new to me as well). That person was one Billie Piper, whom I knew as a crappy pop singer from my childhood.

So, as far as I'm concerned, Billie's the only bit of stunt casting there has been so far.

Most of the discussions about alleged stunt casting only work among U.K. residents, I assume.

Billie Piper never had a breakthrough as a crappy pop singer here in Germany (thank God, we've got enough crappy pop singers of our own), so the only one I was familiar with was Christopher Eccleston because I'd watched a few movies with him.

I don't watch enough actual telly and mostly go "who?" Seriously. Bride in Doomsday. Didn't recognise her, even now have only the vaguest clue who she is.

That Catherine Tate woman? I don't know, either, what she has done that every other reaction post to Doomsday seemed to hate her quite a lot. But I hope I won't find out in the Christmas special.

It wa sort of funny the amount of hate that got. Especially because the Bride thing was such a huge surprise.

I *had* seen CE before Who, but I hadn't even realised it (I loved The Others but I didn't even realise CE was in it until I looked him up om IMDB) So that wouldn't be all that successful as stunt casting, then.

The ones that might be construed as somewhat 'stunt' casting from my non-British POV was Marc Warren. He's had a fair bit of international exposure in a number of co-star roles in succesful TV series like Hustle and State of Play. But that's only in one of the later episodes of the second season, in an episode that had a definite need of a charismatic star, because the usual charisma-booster was absent for most of it :-)

Oh, I keep forgetting CE was in The Others - I saw that movie years ago. But it does rather prove my point: I hadn't heard of him, even if I may have seen him in things before.

Oh, CE was the best thing about The Others and also 28 Days Later, I remember I knew his face from somewhere, it was fantastic to find out he was my personal higlight in those movies

Admittedly, my reaction to hearing about Billie Piper was: "That girl I used to listen to when I was about eleven? Oh, gods. If I wanted to see it before, now I need to check it out."

So it was more like crack casting. Heh.

From: [identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com

I'm a few years too old for Billie's moment, but the thing is she wasn't a pop star, she was a washed-up pop star. And for The Kids that was... jeez, half The Kids weren't even born when she was famous for that. It's not like we were running about going "Ooh, Billie Piper, she's so famous and cool! This guarantees Teh Awesomeness!"

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Yeah, she had never been known for, you know, good music, just your average pop trash, and her moment had long passed. I can almost see why some of the OG peoples were so outraged by her casting.
