I wonder, just how much of the crazy in the Doctor Who fandom would be avoided if people would actually come to terms with the fact that Rose isn't the exception, she's just the first example of the new rule?
Oh yeah. Just like the way Harry Potter fans in the future are going to be completely bewildered by all the shipwank (what with knowing how it all ends up...)
Nah, just an idiot on the OG claiming the only reason Billie was in the credis was because she was already well known, and because she was "the link to a new generation of fans." Or something.
Which one could interpret as saying that Billie Piper was stunt casting, which is an amusing implication.
Since I remember hearing people whinge about David's "looking wrong" after the CiN special, I expect quite a few. Though I suspect the mods of certain comms might be planning to crack down on this sort of off-topicness.
If I had known about Billie Piper's career as a pop starlet before becoming interested in the new DW, I'd probably never have bothered with the show at all. Is this negative stunt casting then?
Want to know something that has amused me for a while? You know how certain places are always banging on about how X is stunt casting, or Y is stunt casting, and they can't act etc.
Well, in the entirety of the last two series of Doctor Who, I had only ever heard of one of the cast before I saw them in Who (and I'm including both the Doctors, who were new to me as well). That person was one Billie Piper, whom I knew as a crappy pop singer from my childhood.
So, as far as I'm concerned, Billie's the only bit of stunt casting there has been so far.
Most of the discussions about alleged stunt casting only work among U.K. residents, I assume.
Billie Piper never had a breakthrough as a crappy pop singer here in Germany (thank God, we've got enough crappy pop singers of our own), so the only one I was familiar with was Christopher Eccleston because I'd watched a few movies with him.
I *had* seen CE before Who, but I hadn't even realised it (I loved The Others but I didn't even realise CE was in it until I looked him up om IMDB) So that wouldn't be all that successful as stunt casting, then.
The ones that might be construed as somewhat 'stunt' casting from my non-British POV was Marc Warren. He's had a fair bit of international exposure in a number of co-star roles in succesful TV series like Hustle and State of Play. But that's only in one of the later episodes of the second season, in an episode that had a definite need of a charismatic star, because the usual charisma-booster was absent for most of it :-)
Oh, I keep forgetting CE was in The Others - I saw that movie years ago. But it does rather prove my point: I hadn't heard of him, even if I may have seen him in things before.
Is it wrong that I am almost as interested in how fandom reacts to the next series as the series itself?
(Well, that's an exaggeration, considering how fascinated I am with how the show deals with a new companion. Still, I have far to much interest in it...)
Admittedly, my reaction to hearing about Billie Piper was: "That girl I used to listen to when I was about eleven? Oh, gods. If I wanted to see it before, now I need to check it out."

...I have one of Billie Piper's songs on CD. We used to dance to them in Jazz Ballet when I was about 11

But Rose is just as important as Martha. :) Anything more or less would be strange.

So it was more like crack casting. Heh.
