And the computer is back again. And working - at least for now, anyway.

As far as the tech could tell, there's either something wrong with the battery, or with the charging circuits. The battery is replacable, and easy to fix (if not cheap), but the circuits would involve taking the whole thing apart.

Thus, since it's working again now, I'm backing stuff up, and hoping that it can last until after exams, when letting people take it to pieces is livable.

There's possibly something wrong with the fact that I don't even need to give the repair guy my address anymore - my name is enough. And he gave me a discount this time, too.

In other news, in the time my computer was away, I read 3 and half books. Because that's what I do when I don't have a computer - I read.

Said books:
- Warlords of Utopia, by Lance Parkin (It's a Faction Paradox book, for those who know of such things.
- Thud! by Terry Pratchett (re-read)
- Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett (re-read)
- The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, by Oliver Sacks (partially read)

In other news, Another rec up at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. For those who are wondering, it's one of my Old School recs - a Susan fic. I got this icon especially for it.

Also, some S3 Doctor Who news. Spoilery, of what people are wearing is considered a spoiler. No photos yet, mind.

From the people who have been watching filming: Yes, in S3, we will be seeing a return of Tux!Ten. Hurrah! Also, it appears that Freema also gets the formal gear this time, with Martha in an evening dress. Ah, shiny outfits, how I love you.

On the subject of TV news, I heard the thing about Life on Mars finishing after S2. Somehow, I sort of saw that coming. I'm looking forward to the new series, but I think it's not a concept that should be extended too long, so if we end up with a good conclusion, I'll be happy with two series'.

so if we end up with a good conclusion, I'll be hapy with two series'.

I am quite happy that they decided to end season 2 with a clear-cut ending. This has something to do with my short attention span (only a few series manage to keep me interested for the duration of more than, say, three seasons), and has a lot to do with the concept of the series. "Life on Mars" is very much about Sam's angst and the uncertainty of whether he's a time traveller or comatose, and it would be impossible to keep up the ambiguity for long. At some point, Sam's questioning the reality of 1973 would become ridiculous - or it would sort of fade out and "Life on Mars" would turn into a standard cop show.

How's Wintersmith? I don't get my copy until the end of the month.

I quite liked it, but I don't think it was as good as the first two Tiffany books - well, maybe it's on level with the second, but it isn't as good as the first.

That said, it's Pterry, and his base state of good is a lot higher than most other writers I know of.

*notices typo, and headdesks*

But you are dead right about the focus on Sam questioning reality. As much fun as the "current day guy surviving in the past" gimmick is, it's not the first time it's been done. And he would adapt - it's the questioning, the slight surrealness of everything, and Sam still trying to find a way home despite everything that makes it unique.

And I am fascinated to find out how they end it.

He may not quite know what to do with Tiffany as she grows closer to being Granny II.

I adore that icon!

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

True. Though we seem to be moving ever closer to the inevitable Tiffany/Roland stuff, which might be an interesting thing to explore in the Granny-esque Tiffany. (I quite like what happens with Roland in Wintersmith, actually. He gets some good character development)

I rather like it too, but can't recall where I got it from.

From: [identity profile] neadods.livejournal.com

I'm rather hoping, based on Tiffany's refusal to destroy the horse necklace, that Tiff won't be making some of the choices that Granny made re: love. Because Roland has intrigued me ever since he gave her the dictionary. He's got possibility.

Nguh! I hate having to wait to read the Pratchetts! (But I love getting them free for my b-day, which is why I have to wait.)

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

Let's just say that the Tiffany's opinion of Roland becomes quite clear at certain points. And Roland manages to be quite good on his own, also. Definite potential there...

I don't wait - as soon as they show up in the city, I nab them. Which is expensive, but they have a lot of re-read value for me, so it's worth it.

I wish some Colleges would jump onto the idea that having courses that show you how to fix your computer (like car maintenance courses) would make them big money. I hate having to pay to get my computer fixed.

From: [identity profile] neadods.livejournal.com

I am *not* a patient woman. But I've got a friend who really appreciates knowing what she can get me for my birthday and that I'm going to love it every time. It's not her fault that Pratchett publishes about a month before the fact!

From: [identity profile] drakyndra.livejournal.com

True, but the thing about computers are they tend to be both quite fiddly, and quite expensive to repair if damaged. Software stuff is fine, but anything beyond basica maintainance, and fiddling with computers is hard.

It's why my sister and I always ask for one CD or DVD - so we know what to get one another.

Not related to anything, but...

Have you read Jacob's recap of Tooth and Claw yet? It makes the recap of TCI look straightforward and succinct.

Re: Not related to anything, but...

Yeah, I have. The problem with Jacob's recaps is that he does generally have a few good points, but they get so drowned out in all the tl;dr that they are almost impossible to find.

That said, he's admitted on the OG that he's setting up discussion on the entire series' themes early, in the hopes that it might get some of the Rosefen there to calm down before they get carried away with psychotic Martha-bashing.

That's understandable, although it's kind of sad. The TWOP forum is the Satan Pit.

Re: Not related to anything, but...

So very very true. An impressively large amount of people on the OG have admitted they avoid those forums like a plague, because of the people there. And this is the OG Forums where people are saying that.
