So, that's made for a busy, busy few days. Aside from the iPartment inspection, and the frantic cleaning that preceded that - I actually ended up finally sorting out my bookshelf, which lead me to the discovery that I actually can fit all my books on there. Just.

I also ended up with three job interviews yesterday. Well, two job interviews, and one for a volunteer position. Plus I have another interview tomorrow morning, and another I need to reschedule (There was a clash...).

The interviews are mostly "We'll only call back if you are successful" so that's a bit wait and see, but I do have the volunteer spot, so at least that can go on the resume. It's for the Brotherhood of St Lawrence online bookstore (which can be found here, if you are wondering) and I can basically come in whenever to help out. I'm thinking maybe one day a week, but we shall see.

And a professional question here: How long should you volunteer somewhere before you ask the supervisor if you can use them as a reference?

And then after that, my computer went and screwed up on me. Or rather Windows went and screwed up on me, so I had to go and reinstall Windows, and then restore all my programs and settings and what-not. Many thanks must go to the HouseMatt, who did most of the complicated work, since I was too busy freaking out about why the speakers didn't work and where the hell all my files had gone.. (And when Matt wasn't around, I went and... cleaned out some of my cupboards, which means I at least know where all my old photos are now. And my old quotebooks. And my passport from when I was 2 years old.)

Yeah, totally asking for a new computer or laptop or something for my next birthday. Well, I got this one for my 21st, so it'll be 5 years old in May.

Getting back online, it appears I missed a few things. Like I said on Twitter, one day without Internet, and suddenly there are official Watchmen prequel comics? Anything much else going down?
You know, I didn't even realise computers could get a virus in the start menu, but apparently that is in fact the case. (Also, whoever is responsible for a virus that causes computers to not be able to shut down has a really warped mind).

...And that is why about 3 hours out of the last 24 have involved rather too much mucking around with anti-virus programs, and why my computer has been so wonky the last couple of days. Though I seem to have things mostly sorted now.

Though I shall have to leave a note to self: Do not trust emails that claim to be from Australia Post.

Speaking of, a pile of books (well, three) arrived in the post from Book Depository for me today, and three more should shortly be on their way. Now, if only I didn't have those darn assignments to do, I could get cracking with all the reading I want to do. Plus there's a new Discworld book out in like a week. Gah, too many books I need to read.

And despite appearances, FMA fans, I did not in fact forget 3 Oct '11 which is Don't Forget Day. I was just otherwise occupied. I did see that there's a pile of new fic floating around, some of which I may read when I get a bit of spare time.

What is everyone else up to?
I have my computer back, and all is right with the world.

Didn't even lose any data or anything (though yes, I just spent several hours backing shit up. Even if that means I am now running out of space on the external hard-drive). New screen works fine, even if I am still getting used to the new speakers - I can't tell if they aren't as good quality, or if the different location is just fucking with me.

...And the people for the old screen rang, and since it's in warranty, they'll fix it for free, even if it'll take a while. Which means I may end up with two screens. Yay me?

It did mean the internet capabilities of my new phone got something of a work-out, mind.

And my essay is still there, even if I am kinda behind where I wanted to be. *sigh* Lucky I had already gotten a start on it, huh?

Best guest for my problems seems to be a power surge went and borked both of them at the same time (I just didn't notice the computer was fucked without a monitor). I've since replaced the powerboard they were on - it was making an odd noise, so I ditched it - and hopefully this won't happen again.

...Tomorrow Mum comes down for my birthday dinner with her. So that should be a slightly less stressful amount of fun.

In other news, I made pea soup. Lots and lots of pea soup. I think two dinners in a row is enough pea soup, but it's still there in a lunch-box in the fridge, gone all... solid. It's mildly disturbing.
So, today I seem to have come down with an epic dose of technology fail.

First, my computer screen just dies - and it was actually the screen, we tested it. So I go into town to buy a replacement. Then when I get home and connect it, Windows won't load for me, no matter what I do, or what the HouseMatt and his fiddling can accomplish.

So in for repairs it will go tomorrow. Hopefully, I' get same day repairs.

And I was going to finish my lit review for my assignment today, too.

At least the phone is now proving it's worth.
You know, this whole absence of comment notifications is starting to get... irksome. I keep losing track of conversations I am having. (Sorry again, to anyone I haven't replied to anywhere).

Could you please fix it already, LiveJournal peoples! Gah.

...But I think I have my computer mostly sorted out now. I think. Unless something else happens
Firstly: Apologies to anyone that I've dropped out of a conversation with in the past couple of days - or the next couple of days, for that matter.

See, I've come down with a case of Computer Woes.

For some reason, on Friday my computer wouldn't turn on when you pressed the on button. This was something of a problem, so I rang the place I got it, someone suggested it was a problem with the the internal power supply, I should bring it in and get a replacement, ra ra ra.

'Course, I didn't fancy lugging it around on public transport, so it had to wait until today, when I could get a lift from The New Housemate. But that was fine, since they were open on Saturdays.

So today I took it in.

Problem number one: Apparently the price I was quoted for service was the weekday one. I could either wait until Monday, or pay extra to get it done today. Eventually, I went with the pay extra option.

Problem number two: Upon testing, they noticed there was something a bit off with the operating system, so they needed to fic that too, and it might take a bit longer, okay? Which was still fine by me.

Problem number three: When I went to pick it up at the time they said it'd be ready... it wasn't. Because there wasn't just a problem with the operating system, the whole hard-drive had parts that were (somehow) corrupted. And so I needed to get a whole new hard-drive.

And thus I ended up hanging around the store for an hour while they back up my data and installed a new hard-drive. Fun.

And now I have to reinstall like, all my programs. And figure out all the settings which I had sorted out, which will be fun.

On the plus side, I now have a 500 gig hard-drive, as well as that external one.

*sigh*

Incidentally, does anyone know how to transfer over play counts and whatever in iTunes from one hard-drive to another? I know it is theoretically possible, since I did it when I went from the laptop to this computer, and I haven't the faintest idea how I did it.

And so now I have thousands of freaking songs, many of which I have listened to a hell of a lot of times, all without all those nifty last played and how often played.

So if anyone knows how I can transfer that over, they will get eternal gratitude, because this is really bugging me.

ETA: Never mind that iTunes bit; Google once more has all the answers. However, anyone know of a decent free anti-virus program?
Well, what do you know - it's time once more for our regular dose of Wednesday Weirdness.

...And I swear, that really wasn't intended to sound quite so game show host.

Anyhoo, onto the weird.

- In Psych lab, we were informed by our tutor of his great and wonderful love of z-scores. No, I do not ship it.

- In Star Trek club, we had to save the Doctor from the evils of Pixelation!
... Okay, so the Doctor Who DVD borked up towards the end, and we got some amusingly blurry pictures. (In case you were wondering, the episode in question was Boomtown. Which just reminded me that watching that was when I decided that A) I really wasn't a fan of Rose, and B) Mickey was my favourite.)

- In Creative Writing, we had to write descriptions of other people in the class. And then they got read out. Which was kinda amusing. (No descriptions of me were read, though the one I wrote was).

- I also workshopped my draft this week, though that was more the awkward weird than the amusing sort.

- There was a Kitchen party in the iPartment! 'Cos everyone needs to eat.

- The epic saga of my DVD drive. Which actually encompasses yesterday, too.

Anyway, since I had no class yesterday, and I was feeling cold and lazy, I decided to stay in and watch more anime DVDs. Slight problem: My computer's DVD drive decided to go on the blink. All freaking day. I poked around and troubleshot and rebooted and restarted and no matter what, it just would not play DVDs, even ones that worked fine on the weekend (CDs worked fine, though). I even had the HouseMatt come in and take my computer apart to look, and in the end even he thought it was the DVD Reader giving up the ghost and need a new DVD drive.

So, overnight I come to deal with the fact that I'll have to buy a new drive. No biggie - that aren't that expensive, relatively speaking, and Matt walked me though how to install one. DVDs still not playing this morning. I get home, after late Creative Writing, and do a last minute check that the discs themselves work for other people - no problem. So, of to get a new Drive tomorrow.

I give the player one last check, just for the hell of it, not expecting anything to happen. And what do you know: It works.

I don't know if I should be pleased it started working before I forked out for a new one, or annoyed that it apparently went on the blink for no reason whatsoever.

And now I need to watch as much as possible before it dies again! So much for an early night to bed...

ETA: And naturally just typing these words has jinxed me, since the stupid thing is now playing every DVD except the one I actually want it to play. Fuck You, Universe.
And so does my computer it seems. (Speaking of: The place I left my laptop with to find out what the hell is actually wrong with it still hasn't gotten back to me. They said they'd call Monday.)

Also: I have concluded I require a mousepad.

Incidentally, flist, you weren't very helpful at all when it came to naming the thing. It still remains nameless, though I am vaguely considering Gwen right now ([livejournal.com profile] fa11ing_away mentioned something about the missing panel looking like a gap in it's teeth. I made the Torchwood connection. Feel free to come up with better ideas).

I have, however, found something resembling a desktop - this one btw, since it is pretty and shiny and I read another of the Haruhi Suzumiya books on the weekend. I suspect it's only a temporary desktop, anyhow.

And the rest of this post is just me listing all my end of semester type stuff, just so I've got it all together somewhere.

So, this morning my laptop (aka my normal computer) went and threw a hissy-fit of epic proportions.

And by hissyfit, I mean it just stopped working.

And as you can sort of guess from that statement, there were very many ways is which this was just not good.

Anyhow, Lancelot (the Laptop) is currently at a repair place up in Coburg, waiting for someone to work out what's wrong and give me a quote on getting it fixed.

And as for me?

Well, I've spent the entire afternoon getting the computer I'd had sitting in the living room actually properly set up and all. (Including the necessary programs, and trying to remember all the sites I had bookmarked) People who've been to the iPartment know which one I mean (Sorry, Josh, you can't use the epic screen to play games on any more).

Fortunately, nothing real important was lost when Lancelot threw his hissy-fit, 'cos most of the important stuff was on the external hard-drive, and the only thing I was in the middle of when it went kerblewy was reading HP fanfic. I do seem to be missing the play counts on all my songs in iTunes, alas.

Anyhow, aside from the futility or trying to remember just what I've forgotten to set up, there are a couple of things I do still need for Teh New Computer.

Firstly, is a new wallpaper. All the ones I have saved were sized to fit the laptop's screen, which was rather smaller. So, if you guys could drop me links to wallpapers you think I'd like (you're on my flist, you should have an idea of what sort of things and fannishness I am into) or ones that are just plain good - and sized 1440x900, could you drop a link to this post?

And the second - and naturally, more important - is that said New Computer is in need of a name. The Laptop was Lancelot, the iPod is Darth, my memory stick is Clementine my external HD is The Oncoming Storage: a suitable name is essential.

Key features of the PC, for characterisation purposes: Epicly large screen, speakers that actually work (I've been using headphones on Lancelot for four years), and the on the front of the actual computer, on of those little panel things that covers the gaps for inserting extra CD drives and whatever is missing 'cos someone poked it too hard.

Names, people. Names!

PS: Everything is going Just As Planned, computer-wise right now. But if anything starts being wonky, expect posts from me begging for assistance.
And the computer is back again. And working - at least for now, anyway.

As far as the tech could tell, there's either something wrong with the battery, or with the charging circuits. The battery is replacable, and easy to fix (if not cheap), but the circuits would involve taking the whole thing apart.

Thus, since it's working again now, I'm backing stuff up, and hoping that it can last until after exams, when letting people take it to pieces is livable.

There's possibly something wrong with the fact that I don't even need to give the repair guy my address anymore - my name is enough. And he gave me a discount this time, too.

In other news, in the time my computer was away, I read 3 and half books. Because that's what I do when I don't have a computer - I read.

Said books:
- Warlords of Utopia, by Lance Parkin (It's a Faction Paradox book, for those who know of such things.
- Thud! by Terry Pratchett (re-read)
- Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett (re-read)
- The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, by Oliver Sacks (partially read)

In other news, Another rec up at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. For those who are wondering, it's one of my Old School recs - a Susan fic. I got this icon especially for it.

Also, some S3 Doctor Who news. Spoilery, of what people are wearing is considered a spoiler. No photos yet, mind.

Teh News )

On the subject of TV news, I heard the thing about Life on Mars finishing after S2. Somehow, I sort of saw that coming. I'm looking forward to the new series, but I think it's not a concept that should be extended too long, so if we end up with a good conclusion, I'll be happy with two series'.

So, my computer has gone and died on me. Again.

Yeah, well that bites.

I am not impressed. *starts thinking about getting a new computer*
Since I was going to do it earlier, but Ye Olde Computer decided to be inconvenient, I had to hold it over to now, so here we go!

(For those not familiar with Prosh Week, it is a Melb Uni tradition. And tends to cause lot of entertaining fun)

Anyway, I was with Team Basement (aka the Hello Kitty Ninjas), which was a conglomerate made up of members of assorted Basement clubs. Sadly, by the end of the week, most people opted out and it ended up being only about five of us doing everything.

But to start at the beginning! Or rather, the middle, when I jumped into things.

Our team theme was Anime, and colour pink, which made for some amusement. And let me have fun with some animegirl outfits.

I think the fact I already owned all these clothes is the most disturbing part )

But, on Wednesday was the Trivia Night. Which was good for cheering upness, even if our team ended up being somewhere in the middle. At least we had the amusement of someone actually asking a question where the answer genuinely was Henry Kissinger. (I believe [livejournal.com profile] mercdaemon was immediately sent a text informing him of this fact.

Oh, and there was this lovely quote from the evening:
[livejournal.com profile] tinyteddyqueen: "Goldie saves pussy all the time."

Thursday started the Scav Hunt. Which was the most important part of the week, naturally.

I managed to attend the fab toga party, in which we marched (chanting, in colourful togas and with the "Emperor" Judges in chairs being carried) down Swanston Street. On the road and all! Brilliant fun.

Some photographic proof )

Then, we had obtaining supplies for the Scav Hunt. One of the things called for was a Dalek, funnily enough, so I, um, supplied.

How could I possibly resist? )

Sadly, due to our team's size (and relative laziness of most of the members) winning was never a possibility. It was fun, though.

This was supposed to be a photopost and run down of Prosh Week and Scav Hunt, which was what has occupied me for the last few days.

However, last night my laptop went and died. Again. It's now out being tested for things, and I'm at a net cafe.

So, in lieu of interesting postings from me, I'll make a request of my flist: I've noticed that over the last few weeks, I've had quite a few people I don't know friend me. Some I've only chatted with briefly, some not at all.

So introduce yourselves, n00bs! Tell me who you are, about yourselves, why you friended me. And once my computer's back, I might chat with you a little more.
So, yesterday I had a minor nervous breakdown when my computer just... died. As in, turned itself off, with no prompting from me. And then everytime I tried to turn it back on, it would turn off again within a minute or two. And I hadn't the faintest idea why.

My first assumption was some nasty virus or something, so I went and called up some computer repair place, who sent someone out today (at like 5pm, so I had a computerless today. Which is Not Good when one has work to do for Creative Writing. Think I should email my tutor about things?)

So he turned up, and checked for spywear and viruses and the like, and there was nothing. Well, nothing particularly nasty. And his only other suggestion was a problem with the fan, or the computer overheating, but he went and burned some stuff onto a CD (to clear up memory and all, which was another suggestion), and said if that didn't get it to overheat, then it was something else.

And again, nothing happened.

So basically, I got charge a lot to get told I should keep the area around the fan intake clear, got some spywear and virus checkers, and got rid of some useless files. And I still don't know what was going on with it the other night.

*sighs*

The only conclusion I can come to is that it is a conspiracy by my computer to prevent me getting spoilered. Or doing work.

And I missed that maskerade party I could have gone to. Which [livejournal.com profile] fa11ing_away kept sending me gloaty texy messages about the guys dressed up as assorted Doctors. Oh, and some guy (dressed as the Fifth Doctor) trying to flirt with me via text, apparently.

Not a good night.
