- My last rec post for [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. Well, that's my month over and done with, and hopefully it pointed some people in the direction of some good fic they hadn't read before. I wonder who's on for November?

- [livejournal.com profile] mina_de_malfois has updated! Yes, a bit more Mina is always good for the soul. And the amusement value. Also, I'd keep an eye on the footnotes when they are next updated, if I were you...

- There has been an infestation of pink icons in fandom as of late. So, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj, I decided to join the crowd. ;)

- The Teaspoon is down. This makes me emo, because despite the fact that the quality of fic there seems to be going downhill rapidly, there were a few quite good fics I was following, and now I can't see if they have updated.

- Next Links List will be late. Partially due to [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, partially due to the Teaspoon downage, and partially because I am too lazy for my own good.

Oh, and Doctor Who won some awards. Most Popular Drama (I think), and Tennant and Piper got ost Popular Actor and Actress respectively. Go Teh Show.
Huh.

So, today I had to go see my Creative Writing tutor about my script submission - not a big deal, really, just checking we didn't have any problems et al. And since I didn't have any problems - I know exactly what I have to do (it's just a matter of actually doing it), we got a bit off-topic.

And I ended up talking about Doctor Who. With my Creative Writing tutor.

This was unexpected, to say the least.

In any case, she's a fan of the show - not in fandom, but a fan. Used to watch it back in the day (Fourth and Fifth Doctors, it seems, but she was, shall we say, not particular fond of Six or Seven), but drifted off, and has come back to the new series.

So we chatted a little about fandom and the craziness of fans. Talked companions a bit - she really liked Leela and Sarah Jane from the old series. And she quite liked Rose, because she was a, quote-unquote "bit of a bogan". She was very fond of Jackie and Mickey as well. Got weepy at Doomsday, it seems.

And she reckoned that both the new series were very well written (and I tend to have a bit of respect in her opinion, what with her being my script writing tutor and all). She was most impressed to find out that Moffat (whom she knew from Coupling had written for Who.

Best quote of the conversation (about the Fourth Doctor):

"He lost his mojo when Romana was around"

And another rec down, which leaves only one more to go. This one was a Five/Turlough one, just for something completely different. The last will be Rose post-Doomsday - it seemed fitting to end with that.

Dear Lord, I hate Daylight Savings. First it managed to completely and utterly bewilder me the other night (But why is 2am gone?), but now, when I have woken up in order to "obtain" the last Torchwood ep, it means that my old normal time is no longer suitable.

Bastard clocks. And I can no longer get back to sleep. Thus, I shall sit up and make exceedingly random posts until I can find a downloadable copy.

Henceforth:

- If one has a poster above the head of their bed, please ensure that it is well attached to the wall. Waking up to a poster on your face is creepy as all fuck.

- Tinhats. In the Doctor Who fandom. Why, I ask you, why? *is currently refraining on commenting on the icon of "Bitch, please"-ness

- For some suitably wanky entertainment, the HP fandom never fails to provide. Thus, we have this and this to check out.

- Rec up. Two to go. If the effing download takes too long, I might do one during the wait, even.

- [livejournal.com profile] torchwoodcoffee has over 120 members. Egads.
Well, since yesterday's post was about Monday, today's shall be about yesterday. But that's okay, since I didn't really do much of anything today. Except attend a lecture, and catch up reading the comment of the aforemention Huge Snape Wank.

Anyway, the main attraction of yesterday was workshopping my play - or the first three scenes of it, anyway. (Remember that thing I was bitching about not having ideas for? The ideas showed up.)

In any case, it was kinda fun, in a very odd way. I got to hear what people who don't share my brain think of my ideas. But it didn't seem to go down too badly for the most part, even if I had to explain a bit (the whole not finished thing, y'know...)

Main criticisms from the tutor: It's too televisual, rather than theatrical. Which I can understand perfectly well - when storytelling I tend to think more filmically than stagelike. Which might require some adjustments, but that can be worked on.

The second one, which both amused and vaguely annoyed me, is that my "couple in love" in the story appartently don't seem in love enough. Apparently they should be less bickery and more "lovey". At which point my head decided it wanted to become intimately involved with my desk. (I like bickery couples, okay! I like banter! Soppy couples bore me)

But that shall be worked on for the next while, oh well. I will also being my tutor about it next Tuesday, so I'll try and have the other scenes at least sketched out by then, and these reworked.

And I also need to get a title. Shall wander around Teh Interwebs looking for quotes, but in case anyone can help, does anyone know of any literary quotes or the like referring to the "Orpheus goes to the Underworld" story? It'd be a help...

And, fandomly there's nother rec down. Actually, I meant to do this last night, but I was too tired.

ETA: To the random (and quite stupid) person whose LJ I stumbled across - Posting your mobile phone number and your address online (complete with directions on how to get there) is not a smart move. I haven't a fucking clue who you are, but who knows what shit someone could pull with that info.
And that's one more rec up. Or down. Or whatever. Four more to go.

Ah yes, on the Shipper Apocalypse. Oddly enough, over at the TWoP GitF thread, it's pretty much non-existant. As in, verging on near universal love for the ep. Which was... unexpected.

Kudos, Americanos.

That said, I suspect that the UK (or downloading) shipper/Rosefen lot are mostly staying out of the that thread. And Jacob has a pinned "Do not make me have to pull Mod on you" notice.

Surprisingly large proportion of "This was my first Doctor Who ep ever, and I loved it" posts. What else was on before/after that meant people were watching?

In any case, happy to see something I adore get the love I think it's earnt. Even if I was kinda looking for some LOLworthy wank.

The only bitching I have seen so far is certain LJ types. Note to the uninformed: You can't use "It was just an excuse for Tennant to get his girlfriend on the show" as a criticism. Before filming, they had only met once. They only hooked up during/after. Sorry, your argument is a failure!

So, I am apparently now on the Melbourne Uni SCA committee. Huh.

(My sole qualification was turning up for the meeting, so it was... odd. Oh well.)

Am feeling vaguely bitchy about my Psych tutor, as he said out Lab Reports would be back today, and they were - he just didn't tell us this until after the office they were in was closed for the day. Yeah, helpful.

Oh, and whilst still on Uni, today was our HPS lecture on Time Travel. Which was interesting, even if it didn't cover as much as I would have liked. We also talked a bit about it in the tute on Tuesday - namely, some different theories of travel (based mainly on two short stories, "All You Zombies" by Heinlein, and "A Sound of Thunder" by Bradbury). It was interesting anyway.

And, Doctor Who got a namecheck, which certain people on my flist may be aware of. ;

Yet another rec up. That's more than half, now. Um, yay? Though it does mean lots of icon changing, as I am trying to have suitable icons for each rec.

ETA: SOMEONE DISTRACT ME WITH SOMETHING INTERESTING, PLEASE! Or else I'll get in trouble from the OG mods for being mean to the idiot I am currently debating with.
Firstly, I have two new recs for [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. Admittedly one is for todays Crossover thing, but still...

(The other was a Martha fic. Try and get some positive feeling going in the fandom and all...)

I also updated the profile of [livejournal.com profile] torchwoodcoffee (Feel free to make alterations, [livejournal.com profile] seti_drd). I have no artistic skills, so I'm sticking with the current layout for now. Hmm. Any suggestions for some comms to request affiliation with?

But my main source of amusement: Nos made a rather amusing post about why Ten > Nine. All fun and happy, yes?

Guess who decided to crash the party? Yes, it's [livejournal.com profile] rose_tyler_ herself, who is Not Amused that people dare say less than nice things about her darling woobie Eccleston.

Yeah, I poked the troll. But how could I not, after classic remarks like these:

"Nine was REAL.

Nine made the show REAL.

And my personal favourite: "Don't you DARE spout shit about My Doctor. Chris is an ACTOR. He BELIEVED he was a Timelord with all his being, and he did it incredibly."

Also, apparently if you prefer Tennant to Eccleston, you are not worthy of the fandom.

(She also refers to Rose in the first person, which weirds me out)
What the shit was going on with the weather today. I mean, seriously, what the hell? It's still almost two months until Summer, why on Earth are we getting 30 degree days now. The weather, it's just... wrong.

God, this might end up being a nasty summer. *sighs*

Fandom is being mildly crazy, as always. But I am too lazy to go digging up links. The heat is making me apathetic and sleepy.

Oh, and I put another rec up. Go me.

*goes to lie down. Stupid heat*
And the computer is back again. And working - at least for now, anyway.

As far as the tech could tell, there's either something wrong with the battery, or with the charging circuits. The battery is replacable, and easy to fix (if not cheap), but the circuits would involve taking the whole thing apart.

Thus, since it's working again now, I'm backing stuff up, and hoping that it can last until after exams, when letting people take it to pieces is livable.

There's possibly something wrong with the fact that I don't even need to give the repair guy my address anymore - my name is enough. And he gave me a discount this time, too.

In other news, in the time my computer was away, I read 3 and half books. Because that's what I do when I don't have a computer - I read.

Said books:
- Warlords of Utopia, by Lance Parkin (It's a Faction Paradox book, for those who know of such things.
- Thud! by Terry Pratchett (re-read)
- Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett (re-read)
- The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, by Oliver Sacks (partially read)

In other news, Another rec up at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. For those who are wondering, it's one of my Old School recs - a Susan fic. I got this icon especially for it.

Also, some S3 Doctor Who news. Spoilery, of what people are wearing is considered a spoiler. No photos yet, mind.

Teh News )

On the subject of TV news, I heard the thing about Life on Mars finishing after S2. Somehow, I sort of saw that coming. I'm looking forward to the new series, but I think it's not a concept that should be extended too long, so if we end up with a good conclusion, I'll be happy with two series'.
So last night was the FAS2 Sugar Ball (For those not familiar with the ways of Second Floorers, it's basically a costume ball type thing, only, well, heavily budgeted. And instead of having alcohol, we have excessive amounts of sugar. FAS is the Uni's Fantasy and Sci-Fi club)

Costume wise, I was being exceptional lazy, because I couldn't be bothered going to any effort to come up with a good costume. So I defaulted back to a Firefly-style Companion's outfit (because when you have as many items of clothing as I do of Chinese silk in interesting styles, it ain't hard).

Oh, and in the afternoon before it I had another op-shop adventure. Visited Savers (God od Op-Shops), and bought a plain black dress to wear under the red and gold silk bolero jacket. And wandered and browsed a bit, et al.

But, onto the Ball itself.

Things What I Learnt:
- Short Courses Guides do not burn.
- Paper towelling burns rather too well.

...What? Totally isn't a pyro

To explain: At one point in the evening, we had a ritual burning of a section of The Eye of Argon. Which was rather too much fun for words.

Look, I have photographic proof and all! )

What else? There were some extrememly yummy chocolate... thingies. Apparently obtained from the Reject Shop. As well as music and dancing. And some guy showed up with a Fourth Doctor scarf, which I sadly failed at kidnapping.

Yays random excuses for eating lots of sugar!

ETA: Another rec up at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. Put some good smut into the mix.

Next rec up at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van! (You really think I could go all month without at least one Ten/Reinette fic?)

In other fandomly news:

Jacob's TCI recap is up. It's as pretentious and tl;dr as ever, but as far as I could tell the word "intimacy" did not show up at all. (If it did I blocked it from my memory). But, I am glad to note, it touches on the "Rose losing her self/humanity" theme multiple times - [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj might be interested to hear that. And there's a Peter Pan metaphor used in there at one point. You can kinda tell he's seen all of S2, really.

In fact, Mr Jacob himself went and showed up at the OG TWOP thread. And I was interested at his logic behind this strategy: "Plus, I have to conquer the shippers, don't you see? Or else S3 will be a bitch, and I'm ever so lazy."

Iiinteresting.

On another fandom note, does anyone else find that when people they know and whose opinions they respect find something about their canon rageworthy, you feel vaguely... guilty for just liking the show, and not noticing these things? As in, you can see their point, and you know there are some deep issues in the writing, and yet when you are watching, you love it so much you really don't care? I feel like I'm a bad person for liking things, sometime.

And away from fandom, and onto Uni.

We used Clag in my Astronomy prac today. Clag! At Uni! It made me giggle wildly, it was just so strange. Oh, and Astronomy test results are back. I got 17 out of 20, which I was happy with, considering it's the test out evil teachers sprung on us unexpectedly, and I hadn't studied for.

Wardrobe notes: Hot pink fishnets over purple opaque tights looks really quite funky.

And, some amusing non-fandom wankiness: Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal spell-checker?

ETA: People who list their address in public posts worry me a little. No, it isn't anyone on my flist. Which is sort of the point.

( Oct. 3rd, 2006 09:49 pm)
My first rec is up at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van!

The very first Doctor Who fic I added to my Links List. God, that seems like an age ago - when all we knew about Ten was "new teeth" and I was getting into flame wars with irrational Ten-haters. Almost a year ago now. Weird.

What else has been going on in the universe? The latest from Charlotte had a cameo from a mouse with some serious ethics issues, and it looks like there will be more to come in that saga.

My Creative Writing tute was cancelled today, because the Tutor was sick. Don't know when we'll catch that one up...

Oh, and there was a guy on my tram this morning with a LiveJournal t-shirt.

ETA: Oh, and something I said on otf_w got iconised.

Also, this Friday is the Sugar Ball. Now, though the official theme is "Darkness and Light", pretty much costume-wise you can wear anything at all sci-fi or fantasy. Any ideas of something I could go as (with a quick visit to Savers or similar)?

There are two new sections up on the latest bad_penny thing - History of the HP BNF Inner Circle, to be precise.

Also, I was going to be working on my next links list (Because then my more recent recs will be easier for me to find for [livejournal.com profile] crack_van thing. Lucky I have about about the first weeks worked out, which gives me some more time). But I had that odd thing where I slept in quite late, but still got tired rather early, so I gave up shortly, and plan to read my book and then go to bed. Or lurk around b_p

I have also managed to gain a blood blister on my foot, and I have utterly no idea how. Which is odd.

In fannish stuff: If even hearing Freema Agyeman's name makes you nauseated, then you may want to leave fandom, for your own health if nothing else. Because she's going to be around for a while, yet.

Also, the US premiere of S2 is tonight. I look to the next few months of fandom with a mixture of fascination and sheer horror.

ETA: WHAT THE SHIT?

ETA2: Another Bad_Penny section up. This one contains references to boob flashing.
